Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not just the 'Nature Saint".......  Aug 13, 2005
Living the Wisdom of St. Francis is a valuable tool and revealing asset in understanding the writings of this popular saint. Simsic's extensive research and personal travel to Assisi add dimension and vitality to the message of Francis. It is not "fluff" on Nature or saccharine sweetness on spirituality. A feeling of unity with Francis' message is invoked as it applies to our lives, today. The author aids us in clarifying Francis' life of simplicity and the great joy he finds in every living creature as part of a Divine plan. The sensitivity to Francis' message and ability to communicate that literally transforms our vision of Francis from just the `Nature Saint' to someone who lives Christ's message joyfully and totally as the focus of his soul. The pertinent meditations and correlating biblical references further enhance our insight. Inspired by the book, I had Simsic speak on "St. Francis, A Pilgrim's Journey", to our church group, where he received rave reviews! Definitely, a good read for those who are open to its wisdom and seek Peace in these frantic, stressful times.
If you want pseudo-Christian fluff this may be your book...  Nov 16, 2004
To begin, let me mention that I had the opportunity to take Prof. Simsic's class while attending Ursuline College as an undergraduate. That said, I feel it puts me in a unique position to critique this book having had to read it in the context of his class on "Christian Spirituality". [...] Like so many of his books, such as "Pray Without Ceasing" there is unfortunately a tendency towards New Age style spirituality with a thin Christian veneer. If one were to read this book alone, you would get the idea of St. Francis as some Medieval hippie who walked around with a squirrel perched on his shoulder and a perpetual smile on his face (possibly drug induced). As with the lives of most saints, Francis was far from this simple. His spirituality has inspired countless men and women to follow in his path and become "fools" for the Kingdom of God. Francis was a man who adopted this lifestyle of radical poverty because he saw that all the things of this world are fading away and he wanted nothing to get in his way in seeking the kingdom of God. This book is never going to get you to what Franciscan spirituality really is though. Althought the meditations may borrow from Francis they are not his at all. At best this book will make you feel warm and fuzzy. At worst it will foster a false notion that Francis and his philosophy could be divorced from Christianity with not too much effort.
Lest this sound merely polemic, let me provide an example. In the meditation, "Let the Earth Teach", he talks about how the universe can become a spiritual teacher and advises that we listen to nature teaching us. [...]Sadly, what could be a great book does little to no justice to Francis or the uniqueness of the Christian message and instead becomes a work that could easily replace Jesus with Buddha or Lao Tzu and the Bible with the religious book of your choice. To not end on a completely trashing note, if you read this book and absolutely love it, try renting the movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon. It too will leave you feeling devoid of substance and in the mood to hug a tree.
