Item Description...
"The Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has found this catechetical textbook, Living Justice and Peace, copyright 2002, to be in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church." Living Justice and Peace: Catholic Social Teaching in Practice is a new course for eleventh and twelfth graders. Living Justice and Peace teaches students about how the Scriptures and Catholic social teaching call them to justice and also fosters their ability and desire to respond to that call in their daily life. Changes to the 2002 edition The student text for Living Justice and Peace 2002 edition includes the following revisions: The sidebar in chapter 1 on Enuma Elish, beginning on page 16, has been replaced with an extensive overview of salvation history that locates justice within the overall context of God's plan for humanity. Throughout, the text explicitly states that perfect justice cannot be accomplished in this world nor can sin be eliminated from the world by human effort alone. In the beginning of chapter 2, Catholic social teaching is located within the context of the Church's evangelization. The text refers more extensively to the Church and emphasizes that the seed of the Kingdom of God is found in the Church. The total changes amount to approximately 5 percent of the textbook. The Living Justice and Peace course has four objectives: to immerse students in God's vision of justice and to help students find God in their pursuit of justice to foster students' sense of compassion for those who suffer from injustice to enable students to critically examine society, using the values of the Scriptures and Catholic teaching, and to imagine ways to work toward justice and peace to inspire students to act, using true stories of how people who work for justice and peace can transform the world Contents Chapter 1 considers themes of original justice, sin, grace, and liberation in the Scriptures. Chapter 2 provides an overview of Catholic social teaching, including discussion of the seven themes identified by the U.S. Catholic bishops in Sharing Catholic Social Teaching. Chapter 3 offers a praxis approach to doing justice. Chapters 4 through 10 apply the principles developed in the first three chapters to specific topics: abortion, capital punishment, building community, racism, work, poverty in the United States and in the world, living simply, the environm

Reviews - What do our customers think?
From St. Mary's Press, [...]  Oct 9, 2009
"The Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has found this catechetical text, copyright 2008, to be in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church."

The second edition of this text has the same sound theology with updated stories, images, and statistics! The Living Justice and Peace course empowers students to examine society critically based on values from the Scriptures and on the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching. The text addresses specific topics including abortion, capital punishment, racism, poverty, the environment, and peace.

After providing students with three foundational chapters on justice and the Scriptures, Catholic social teaching, and a praxis model, the remaining seven chapters each take one of the themes. True stories of adults and teens who have experienced injustice or have transformed the world through acts of justice inspire students to reflect on their own ability to make a difference.

The teaching manual fully supports the student text and includes prayers, prayer services, review questions and answers, student activities, discussion questions, role-play situations, suggestions for interviews and guest speakers, student handouts, and much more.
It's not a Catholic textbook  Oct 29, 2008
I am in the process of trying to get this book removed from our Catholic High School. This book loves militant leftist/Marxist ideology, has an entire section on Liberation Theology, and overtly criticizes the US while praising socialism/communism. It doesn't mention great Catholic social justice saints like Vincent de Paul, Kolbe, or Francis of Assisi and barely mentions Mother Theresa. It is filled with moral relativism equating the Soviet Unioin to the USA stating directly they both wanted to militarily control the world in the cold war. This book is wrong historically, it fails to promote Catholicism, and is more aligned with the ideology of Reverend Jeremiah Wright than Benedict XVI. Did I mention the book doesn't even mention the Compendium of Catholic Social Justice Teaching? A Catholic school would be negligent to have this book in its curriculum.
