Overview
A nineteenth-century spiritual classic about living wholeheartedly for Christ, so as to have no regrets at life's end. Real, practical spiritual wisdom. Living in the Hope of Glory (originally titled Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. It consists of a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, as he suffered from terminal cancer. His family and friends met in his bedroom each Sunday during the last six months of his life to partake of the Lord's Supper and to hear his exhortations. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living consistently, powerfully and joyfully for the Lord, even in the midst of hard times. A week before his death Monod said, "I have a Savior! He has freely saved me through his shed blood. . . . All my righteous acts, all my works that have been praised, all my preaching . . . is in my eyes only filthy rags." A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.

Publishers Description
Living in the Hope of Glory (originally Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. Originally these were a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, to groups of his family and friends. They met in his bedroom each Sunday to partake of the Lord's Supper during the last six months of his life as he suffered from terminal cancer. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living whole-heartedly for Christ and living so as to have no regrets at life's end. A week before his death he said, "I have a Savior He has freely saved me through his shed blood. ...All my righteous acts, all my works which have been praised, all my preaching...is in my eyes only filthy rags." A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Adolphe-Louis-Frederic-Theodore Monod was born in Copenhagen on January 21st, 1802, where his father was pastor of the French church. His elder brother was Frederic Monod. Educated at Paris and Geneva, he began his life-work in 1825 as founder and pastor of a Protestant church in Naples, moving to Lyon in 1827. Here his evangelical preaching, and especially a sermon on the duties of communicants (Qui doit communier?), led to his deposition by the Catholic Minister of education and religion. Instead of leaving Lyon he began to preach in a hall and then in a chapel. On September 2nd, 1829 he married Hannah Honyman in Lyon. They had seven children. In 1836 he took a professorship in the theological college of Montauban, removing in 1847 to Paris as preacher at the Oratoire. He died there on April 6th, 1856. Monod was undoubtedly the foremost Protestant churchman and preacher of 19th century France. He published three volumes of sermons in 1830, another, La Credulite de l'incredule in 1844, and two more in 1855. Two further volumes appeared after his death. One of his most influential books was the posthumous, Les Adieux d'Adolphe Monod a ses Amis et a l'Eglise (Adolphe Monod's Farewell to his Friends and to his Church from which this book's content is extracted).

Adolphe Monod was born in 1802 and died in 1856.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
If this was fiction, we might not believe it!  Apr 7, 2008
Not only did Adolphe Monod face cancer with an encouraging faith, but he pastored other people in the midst of his own pain. His short talks are packed full of encouraging, practical insights into the basics of a Christian's life. I found them very readable, and I'm neither a theologian nor a French scholar. This book is a resource to keep on your shelf and dip into whenever you need bolstering!
