This whimsically-illustrated children's picture book tells the story of how Lucy's adoptive parents travelled to Russia to adopt her; how they brought her home; and how they ultimately became a happy family.

Publishers Description
Little Lucy's Family tells the story of how Lucy's adoptive parents traveled to Russia to adopt her, how they brought her home, and how they ultimately became a happy family. With the increase in parents adopting from overseas, ethnically-mixed families are becoming more common, yet they still face unique issues. This book addresses many of those issues in ways that children can understand and appreciate, and it helps children celebrate their past while realizing the love they have in their new families. While Lucy is from Russia, the lessons in this book are universal to children adopted from any country.

Questions about Birth Parents  Dec 1, 2008
Little Lucy's Family opens with a proclamation that the world is made up of many different kinds of families. We are briefly introduced to Lucy's current family, then learn that is was first conceived when a childless American couple visited Russia to investigate the possibility of adopting a baby. The narrator is Lucina, the child they chose, now known as "Lucy." The central theme is Lucy's curiosity about her birth parents. Lucy knows that she was not born to her American mom and can recite several reasons that birth moms give up their babies. She is sad when she realizes she doesn't know the names of her birth parents, wonders why they didn't keep her, and feels, at times, confused, angry, and "kind of lonely, like a bit of me is missing." At first Lucy conceals her feelings from Mom and Dad, afraid they might think she doesn't love them. Ultimately Dad talks Lucy through these issues, reassuring her that wondering about her birth parents is okay. He also addresses her concern over not having a photo of her birth parents. "You might not remember your birth Mom, but I can tell you a bit about her when I look at you," Dad says before ticking off attributes of Lucy's appearance and personality.

The story is broadened in a section on Jin, Lucy's friend who was adopted from China. Jin used to be angry when people said her mom couldn't be her real mom because she didn't look like Jin. Now Jin accepts that "people who think like that don't really understand big stuff."

This brightly illustrated book is intended for children age 2 and older. Mom and Dad's responses serve as a good model for adoptive parents who may need help anticipating and reacting to questions about birth parents.
