Publishers Description

The book that started it all Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's treasured Little House series, which is based on her life growing up as an American pioneer.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point-of-view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep.

And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier history and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

More About Laura Ingalls Wilder & Garth Williams

Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867, near Pepin, Wisconsin. From 1882–1885 she was a teacher in South Dakota. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885. Laura and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, made their own covered-wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. There, believing in the importance of knowing where you began in order to appreciate how far you've come, Laura wrote about her childhood growing up on the American frontier.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has said that she and her sisters were busy and happy as children but loved Pa's stories the best. In 1932, when Laura was 60 years old, she wrote her first book, Little House In The Big Woods, so those stories would not be lost. She thought about how she had seen the settling of the frontier -- the woods, Indian Territory of the Great Plains, the frontier towns, the coming of the railroad, and homesteading on the prairie. She thought of writing the story of her childhood in eight volumes that would cover each aspect of the American frontier. These became the Little House series. Wilder finished the last book in 1943. On February 10, 1957, she died at age 90, on her farm in Mansfield, Missouri.

For millions of readers Laura lives on forever as the little pioneer girl in the beloved Little House books.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 and died in 1957.

Awesome book!  Sep 28, 2008
This book is so amazing! I read it and just got sucked right into it. I am currently on the third one because I just started reading them a little while ago. My mom said they were her favorite books growing up, and they are high up on my favorite book list myself!
My favorite!  Mar 27, 2007
I remember checking this book out of the school library over and over and over- I tried the other Little House books, but for some reason, this one sticks with me. I recently bought a copy to add to my growing children's library, and of course I had to read it again. Admittedly, there isn't really a plot here. Basically, this is Laura Ingall's life in the big woods, from fall, through winter, and then right up to the next fall. She shows you how people lived in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. This may sound boring to some, but it fascinates me. Laura writes about smoking meat with clean, fresh hickory chips. Then there is the day they butcher their pig, and it's amazing how not a bit of the animal is wasted. She describes in detail other bits of frontier life: making butter, cheese, bullets, and my absolute favorite, the maple syrup! You can almost taste the delicious home-made food! It's amazing what we take for granted these days. I also like the fact that these children are so content and happy in their rough life. They each only have a single doll to play with- the rest is up to their imagination. When they receive a piece of candy after their first trip EVER into town, Laura wraps hers up in her handkerchief to keep always, it's much too beautiful to eat. I just love everything about this book, and it makes me want to move out into the wilderness and "rough it".
If you find this book more tedious than the others, I would suggest you study this period in American History with your child (perfect for homeschoolers!) and then read Laura Ingall's account of her own life- see if that peaks any interest. This book is so rich and quaint- it would be a shame to skip it in lieu of the other Litte House books!
A wonderful introduction to prairie life, and the delightful Ingalls family!  Jan 23, 2007
Five-year-old Laura Ingalls, along with her big sister Mary, baby sister Carrie, and beloved Ma and Pa, couldn't ask for anything more in her life. She lives in a lovely house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, where she spends her days doing chores, playing with her straw-made doll, and listening to Pa play the fiddle. They may not be rich, but Laura adores her cozy, snug log cabin, which is surrounded by trees, and located deep in the forest. But life on the prairie is not always easy for Laura's family. While she may be young, she sees the fear in her parents eyes when talk of wolves and bears, and even panthers arise in conversation. But Laura never worries, for she trusts her Pa, and knows that he has the strength of an Ox, and the brains of many men put together. Pa will protect the family, and, at the same time, bring home the bacon. For Pa is a wonderful shot, and always knows how to hunt for the food that will keep Laura's family thriving year-round. While Laura may seem like a busy girl, however, she and Mary never lose sight of childhood, and spend as much time playing and exploring in the woods with their pup, Jack, as they do helping Ma churn butter, watch after baby Carrie, and doing various other chores.

While I have seen every episode of the TV show "Little House On the Prairie" countless times, I have never read one of the books from this series, which I find immensely delightful. Each chapter is like a short story in and of itself, producing a situation, a problem, and a solution that gives the reader pleasure in having discovered something new about frontier life. Laura is a wonderful character, who, even at the tender age of five, displays wisdom well beyond her years. Her determination to catch up in age with Mary is easy to relate to, and will win points with readers who hold the title of little brother or sister; while making older siblings feel more grateful for the younger brothers and sisters they have been blessed with. LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS follows the Ingalls family for a full year of their lives, from Spring to Summer, and Fall to Winter. And, after readers have accompanied the family for a year, they have the opportunity to continue the fun, for the back of the book presents not only a brief biography about Laura Ingalls Wilder herself, but a frontier recipe (Molasses-On-Snow Candy), lyrics to a song (Pop! Goes the Weasel), directions for an activity (Hide the Thimble), and even a history page. A wonderful introduction to prairie life, and the delightful Ingalls family!

Little House in the Big Woods  Jan 18, 2007
Laura Ingals Wilder is the main character in the story. Throughout the book she five to about seven years old. She has short dirt brown hair, and an older sister named Mary. She enjoys watching the seasons go by, and helping Ma and Mary around the house. Togehter, they are a close, loving, family.
I believe that the plot of the story is mainly to inform the reader of the quality times when the whole family all comes together to accomplish so much. I find it amazing how they live a comfortable life without any of the machines and technology we have today.
The events in the book mainly take place in Laura's cozy, log home. The home i a clearing in the middle of a thick wood surrounding them.
I definetly enjoyed this book, because I can relate so easily to many of Laura's characteristics. We both have the same hair color, an older sibling, and a loving family. And from this book, I've learned that that's the most important of all.
A Wonderful Trip Down Memory Lane ...  Jan 1, 2007
Thirty-one years ago, I got my first hard-cover book (when you're 6, a hard-cover book like this one means a big deal ... it's a "grown-up" book!) and it was this one. I fell in love with reading and with Laura Ingalls Wilder in one big swoop. Reading it again 31 years later ~~ I am not disappointed. Since I don't have a little girl to read this to, I thought, I would read my lovely Christmas gifts from my sons this week ~~ and it's more wonderful than I have ever imagined!

Now that I am older, I can definitely appreciate the hard work that Laura's mom, Caroline, does just to keep everything running smoothly in the Ingalls household. Even Laura doesn't sit around ~~ at the tender age of 4 going on 5, she is expected to do her chores and help her mother and older sister around the little cabin. And yes, it is a romanticized look on life in the 1870s. But who cares? Reading this little gem of a book got me on a life-long love affair with reading and history!

If you are a mom or a young girl that is looking for something wonderful to read ~~ please start with this book and continue on with the journey with the rest of the series. Laura Ingalls Wilder is one of the nation's best storyteller and one of the best care-keeper of history. Unlike history books in school, this one is not boring at all. It just reminds you how much further along we've come since then ... when Laura's most cherished treasure is getting her little rag doll for Christmas.

Little House in the Big Woods  Nov 15, 2006
I thought this book was a wonderful story. I love the wilderness and nature so this was a good book for me. I enjoyed reading about the stories that Pa tells. Like the ones about the panthers, bears, wolves, and other wild animals. I cant wait to read the next book, and the one after that, and all the rest. I think anyone would enjoy this book.
