Publishers Description

The book that started it all Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's treasured Little House series, which was based on her life growing up as an American pioneer. This edition features Garth Williams' interior art in vibrant full color.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack.

Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep.

And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier history and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

More About Laura Ingalls Wilder & Garth Williams

Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867, near Pepin, Wisconsin. From 1882–1885 she was a teacher in South Dakota. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885. Laura and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, made their own covered-wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. There, believing in the importance of knowing where you began in order to appreciate how far you've come, Laura wrote about her childhood growing up on the American frontier.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has said that she and her sisters were busy and happy as children but loved Pa's stories the best. In 1932, when Laura was 60 years old, she wrote her first book, Little House In The Big Woods, so those stories would not be lost. She thought about how she had seen the settling of the frontier -- the woods, Indian Territory of the Great Plains, the frontier towns, the coming of the railroad, and homesteading on the prairie. She thought of writing the story of her childhood in eight volumes that would cover each aspect of the American frontier. These became the Little House series. Wilder finished the last book in 1943. On February 10, 1957, she died at age 90, on her farm in Mansfield, Missouri.

For millions of readers Laura lives on forever as the little pioneer girl in the beloved Little House books.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 and died in 1957.

I am telling you it is MAD good!  Mar 23, 2010
By Aminata

Pa tried to shoot the bear but missed. Pa always tells stories to his two daughters Laura and Mary. He remembered one time when he was a little boy. This is what he said, "My father told me to go outside and catch a bear. When I went outside, I played with the animals until night time. I got so scared at night that I ran away." The girls love his stories.

My favorite part was when Pa went to the woods with Uncle Pete. They caught a bear! They eat as a family. They were all happy.

If you want to read about a family living in the woods and how life is there, you should borrow Little House in the Big Woods. I am telling it is MAD good. You can borrow it in your library or buy it in a bookstore. This is an awesome book!
Little House Series  Oct 12, 2009
The Little House In The Big Woods is the first step to reading the whole series. I am an older adult, and definitely had to put this one back on the shelf as TO YOUNG OF A READER for me. But a year or so later, I was just too intrigued by the thought that this author wrote about her life in the 1870's and 1880's. I had to give it another try. It is true that the Little House In The Big Woods is still for very young readers, but as the author progressed through her years of writing, she became more adult like in her writing. Her character aged and so did the age group of her writing.
I don't know what good writing is anymore. I don't think these books are particularly well written, but that could be because it is hard to write both exciting and based in reality. But I have become entrenched into the world of Laura Ingalls and her family. So I guess that is good writing. That is what counts.
Outstanding look into an America that was...  Aug 2, 2009
This book will not have you begging to live the lifestyle Laura Ingalls lived, but it will shame you for not having greater appreciation for all the material goods and conveniences you have instantly.

Laura Ingalls, without whining or complaining of how difficult life was, has done far more to elucidate a period of American history that, nowadays, only inhabitants of poor countries can comprehend.

If no other bit of this book were read than her description of making butter in Winter, we all would be more satisfied by today's luxuries - C. William Anderson, aka Travis C. Ward.

Get this book and revel in Laura's charming look at her childhood but also read between those lines. Her generation was heroic. For similar types of readings I suggest also you read the Foxfire series.
