Item Description...
A sudden death tied to a list from the past leads to unimaginable evil.

Fresh out of law school and full of hope for the future, Renny Jacobson is stunned by his father's sudden death--and then by the terms of the will: the elder Jacobson has left the bulk of his estate to charity. For his only son, he has left nothing more than the contents of a deposit box and interest in a company no one has heard of--the Covenant List of South Carolina, Ltd.

When Renny encounters lovely Jo Johnston, meets the members of "The List," and discovers the staggering value of his father's mysterious bequest, his hope is resurrected. But why is Jo, to whom he is deeply attracted, so reluctant for him to claim his rightful share?

Renny feels the supernatural power of the 140-year-old covenant--feels it and wants it for himself. But when his life and Jo's begin to unravel, he is forced to face the truth about "The List." And nothing short of a miracle will save them from its grasp.

Publishers Description

In a world of secrets, where evil has reigned for over a hundred years, the power of an ancient covenant will change the life of one man forever.

As a struggling young attorney fresh out of law school, Renny Jacobson pines for the day he can afford the luxuries of the partners in his Charlotte firm. With news of his father's death and a secret inheritance, Renny's life will surely change forever. But the clandestine society that provides the inheritance soon threatens to change him in more ways than one.

Renny's life, and the life of the woman he loves, depend on supernatural deliverance from the curse of "The List."

A good book.  Mar 12, 2007
This is another great book byRobert Whitlow. It is well laid out with a real life feel.
Amateurish Grisham/Peretti imitation  Nov 3, 2006
Many people have described Whitlow's style as John Grisham meets Frank Peretti. Unfortunately, Whitlow can't decide which one he wants to be, and the product is a plot that lurches from one genre to another.

Initially, I was enthralled with the mystery and eerie secrecy surrounding the "List". About 1/4 of the way into the story however, Whitlow completely shelves all the intrigue and the plot grinds to a halt as the book morphs into a romance novel.

In the last part of the book, the mystery resurfaces suddenly along with the introduction of a Peretti-like spiritual warfare theme that is never fully developed. All the conflicts are quickly resolved with little imagination, and the good guys live happily ever after.

Whitlow's intentions seem good, but his presentation of salvation is as muddled as the plot. At Renny's "conversion" there is essentially nothing about Christ's blood, repentance, or turning from sin. Instead he merely prays "I believe. I receive"; typical of the pablum that passes for the "gospel" nowadays in the Rick-Warrenized American Church of Osteen.

I'd give "The List" one star, but Whitlow earns an extra star for at least trying to craft a novel that's distinctly Christian, and for coming up with an interesting premise.
Can't Wait!  Jul 2, 2006
I have read this book more than once and it is rated at the top of my favorites. The movie is coming out early in 2007. The web site is A powerful story being told on the screen is something to look forward to!
Belongs on *my list* of favorites  May 2, 2006
During the Civil War, a group of men formed a pact to protect their money. Outside in the wind and rain, a prophet spoke a curse against the pact.

The evil spiritual power of this pact draws in a modern heir to the list, even as he learns about this form of spiritual power, an opposing power he was not aware existed.

He is influenced, too, by his past relationship with his harsh father and his new relationship with an attractive woman--both on the list.

Recently, packing for vacation in North Carolina, I chose this book which had sat on my TBR shelf for several months, because the story takes place in nearby South Carolina. I hoped the story would hold my interest against the backdrop of airports between here and NC. It did.

From the airport in Charlotte we drove and visited old friends and former neighbors, searched for and found a grave of my husband's ancestor, and attended Merlefest Bluegrass festival in Wilkesboro.

I was amused to read about the main character traveling from South Carolina to Charlotte, North Carolina, along the same highways we had just traveled for the first time. I see coincidences as God's little smiles. And I loved _The List_. It's not a light story that just entertains and skims the spiritual surface--and there's a definite place for those.

It has history, intrigue, romance and danger, and it demonstrates the power of prayer.

And the often avoided reality of spiritual warfare.

And the need and power of fellowship and prayer support.

It's one to place on my shelf beside Frank Peretti, _Lost Shepherd_ by Agnes Sanford and _Blessed Child_ by Ted Dekker, to entertain, challenge and plunge the reader into the depths of the Spirit.

And I've just learned it will soon be a movie. Finished March 5, it was shot in Wilmington and includes a day along The Battery in Charleston, which I love.

Exciting suspenseful thriller for Christians  Apr 14, 2006
The List by Robert Whitlow is a fabulously plotted book. Renny Jacobson is stunned after his father's death to discover that he inherits nothing but a letter, an old trunk, and membership in The List. It's hard to say much more about the plot without giving away the mysteries within. Whitlow does a wonderful job of only giving out so much information at a time. This is definitely a book that will keep you up at night until you finish it. Sometimes Jo and others in the book come across as proselytizing, but Renny's walk toward faith in Christ is just as compelling as the fast-paced plot. This is a great suspenseful thriller whether you are a believer or not. Impossible to put down.
