Reviews - What do our customers think?
More Excellent Nouwen  Mar 21, 2007
If you are a fan of Henri Nouwen, this is one of his best reads. I used it for Lenten reading again this year.
Are you the Beloved of God?  Mar 16, 2007
This is a good book. Simple, easy to read, to the point.
Nouwen wrote this book to non-believers in God, and to one person and his friends in particular. A chapter near the end of the book shares Nouwen's reation to this man's response to the manuscript, which is interesting.
Nouwen shares 4 principles, that when appropriated in our lives, can make us all better, more effect people.
Evangelicals may not like this book, but they too, would benefit from this read.
All people have an equal value to God  Nov 9, 2006
So all people should have an equal value to each other no matter if they are rich or poor. And each of us is loved by God so we should love ourselves as well.
A beautiful book for Christians, non-Christians will enjoy also because it does not try to convert them  Oct 12, 2006
I am a non-Christian and read this book after reading about Nouwen in Tim Madigan's book on Mr Rogers. Nouwen sounded like a man who lived his faith in a beautiful and attractive way, and I wanted to read the writing that so inspired Madigan and Mr Rogers.

As another reviewer pointed out, as a non-Christian I did get the distinct impression that Nouwen didn't think I was going to burn in hell, which is at odds with what I have read from every other Christian writer besides Philip Gulley and Anne Lamott. So if you are trying to convert someone, this is a loving and appealing book to give someone that will showcase the faith in a light that would attract a non-believer. However, don't be surprised if that nonbeliever feels led to live in a more attractive way but does not embrace Christ, since the book doesn't try to convince one in that direction.

Because of this, I found it a great read. I usually put books down if I feel they are pushing the conversion angle too hard, because I am not converting, I am just finding out how other people think and exploring different belief systems. This book gently nudges people towards feeling embraced by God and led to lead a life of service and care to others. There were many parts that moved me to tears. Nouwen has a quiet way of speaking and I found his religious philosophy and example inspiring and open enough to include me and other non-believers.

to feel precious and loved......  Mar 28, 2006
the song title, What the world needs now is love, sweet love......comes to mind when I think of Henri Nouwen's book, Life of the Beloved. My copy is tattered and frayed, and loved. I would give this book to everyone I meet, as hope for our world lies in each person feeling loved and precious. His words help to light up the dark places that reside in us all. What a wonderful world we humans could inhabit, if each human being felt cherished and loved. With each loved and loving person moving toward their potential, think of the benefits to our society, to our neighbors. Maybe then we could eliminate the word "enemy", changing it to stranger, someone we haven't met yet. Think of the potential for peace. It's possible. Because all change begins within. I hope your copy also becomes well used, and shared.
