Overview
In The life of God in the Soul of Man Scougal explains the four essential characteristics of divine life, their excellence, their advantages and the practical steps that you can take in realizing them as your personal experience. This timeless classic was originally written to encourage a friend and stimulate his spiritual life. It was so appreciated that it was later published as a book for a wider readership. 100 years later a copy was sent to George Whitefield by his friend Charles Wesley - it was instrumental in Whitefield's conversion. This book provided much of the stimulation behind the Methodist Revival of Britain and the Great Awakening in America. The book has an extensive introduction by J. I. Packer and contains, as an appendix, the 'Rules and instructions for a holy life' by Archbishop Robert Leighton of Glasgow.

More About Henry Scougal

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Henry Scougal (1650-1678) was a Scottish theologian, minister and author. Henry Scougal was the second son of Patrick Scougal and Margaret Wemys. His father was Bishop of Aberdeen for more than 20 years. From his infancy, Scougal was raised with religion. From his youth, Scougal spent his free hours in reading, meditation and prayer. He especially enjoyed studying the historical passages of the Old Testament. In 1665 Scougal entered King's College, University of Aberdeen, and, after graduation, was promoted to the office of Professor of Philosophy. In 1672, Scougal was ordained and appointed minister of a church 20 miles from Aberdeen, where he served for one year before returning to take the office of Professor of Divinity at King's College, where he taught for five years. He spoke Latin, Hebrew, and a few Asian languages. Scougal produced a number of works while a pastor and professor of divinity at King's. His most recognized work, The Life Of God In The Soul Of Man, was originally written to a friend to explain Christianity and give spiritual counsel. This work was almost universally praised by the leaders of the Great Awakening, including George Whitefield, who said he never really understood what true religion was until he had digested Scougal's treatise. On 13 June 1678 Scougal died of tuberculosis.

Henry Scougal was born in 1650 and died in 1678.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Must Read!  Apr 3, 2008
This is one of my favorite books in all of my library. It even impacted George Whitefield to say, "I never knew what true religion was till God sent me this excellent treatise." If you find the reading to be a bit complex, check out the rewrite of this book in soft cover, "God's Abundant Life" which is rewritten in modern English by Robert Leighton. The rewrite loses a bit in modern English, but this is a must read.

Awsome book that describes true Christianity  Jan 18, 2007
This book is an amazing description of the true Christian life. The idea that The God of the universe would live in a man is amazing. I highly recomend it to anyone who wants to know what Christianity really is.

A special work  Jan 9, 2007
The content of the book should receive 5 stars, however the copy we received is a facsimile of the original, so its production is not rated very highly. Anyway, we were grateful to receive it. At the moment the book is with our translator to be put into Portuguese and eventually published in that language. So you see how highly we think of this work.

"A True Classic" Does not do this book justice...  Sep 23, 2000
All I can say is WOW! I fell flat on my face after reading this young man's terrifying insight. I cannot express in greater terms the absolute need to read this book. Look at the title of it. That's it isn't it? Galations 2:20: "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and delivered Himself up for me".

A quote by George Whitfield in the preface: "How did my heart rise and shudder like a poor man that is afraid to look into his ledger lest he should find himself a bankrupt. 'Shall I burn this book? Shall I throw it down? or shall I search it?' I did search it; and, holding the book in my hand, thus addressed the God of heaven and earth: 'Lord, if I am not a Christian, for Jesus Christ's sake show me what Christianity is, that I may not be damned at last.' I read a little further, and discovered that they who know anything of religion know it is a vital union with the Son of God -- Christ formed in the heart. O what a ray of divine life did then break in upon my soul!"

Reading this book terrified me because I had to ask "Now that I know these things, what shall I do?". And that began the process where the Lord ripped me open down to the very essence of my nature and furiously broke into my existence.

Thank God for His Son and the relationship They have with each other. Feel free to write; I would love to discuss further.

The Way Christ Wants It  Sep 3, 2000
In his book, Henry Scougal concisely, yet powerfully, spells out what a true Christian looks like. Though our society is mostly a Christian one, not many (including me) live their lives like Scougal's generation of true believers did. Our society has taught us to be relative - as long as we are more "holy" than most of the others in society, we are ok. Scougal teahces us how to be objective - with our focus on God and who He wants us to be. I highly recommend this book for those believers who have realized that their watered-down faith needs to be made strong in the Lord's eyes.
