Item Description...
Submission. It's an uncomfortable word, and a confusing issue. But does submission really mean what people think it does? While God intended submission to promote order and freedom in all relationships, the world has misused it for power and personal gain. Yet God's design for freedom in relationships is still practical and timely. Submission is worth taking another look at. As a strong woman married to a strong man, Bunny Wilson struggled to understand the biblical emphasis placed on submission. Yet when she studied and began to understand what God has to say about the subject, the truth liberated her -- submission is for everyone, men and women alike. Biblical submission doesn't tear down relationships; it builds them up by destroying anger and rebellion while setting people free to love and give.

Disappointing  Dec 16, 2006
What can I say about this little book that has sold over 100,000 copies? Author Bunny Wilson has set out to make a few points: a) Everybody is called to "submit" to others (in society, at work, in sports, in the military): as Christians we must gently and graciously yield to our "superiors"; b) A woman's submission to her husband is not a dirty concept devised by a patriarchical system to oppress women, but a strategical decision made by God himself; c) By submitting to a man's God-driven leadership a woman will find peace and contentment. Nothing of what Bunny says in this book is new or "revolutionary," but its lasting appeal lies in the fact that female submission is such a controversial concept. As far as my perception is concerned, she does succeed in showing that submission does not automatically equal oppression. She also does a good job in weaving her personal stories into a coherent view of sanctification (the final purpose of submission). Having said that, I was disappointed that most of her book focused on "When a man is centered in God, then a woman can do this, this, and that ....." In other words, by putting the burden on man, she had very little to say or suggest (in comparison with the whole of the book) to women whose husbands are either slow, hesitant or temporarily refuse to follow God's leadership. In that case, I can see men saying the same thing: "I will follow God's leadership when I see evidence that my wife is a 1Pt wife." It cuts both ways, baby!
A couple of times, reading her book, I felt like saying: "Oh, poleeezeeeee!!!!!!" First case, when reading that "Eve's laughter in Eden's garden, was carried on the wings of doves" (barf!!!) second time when she gave a couple of examples of women who submitted to their bosses at work, only to end up with thousands dollars pay raise. Sure, Bunny! It's like saying that a few people became millionaires working at Amway! What she seems to forget is that pathological bosses are EVERYWHERE, and NO! NO! a thousand times NO! we should yield to them just because she feels the Bible says so! (The Bible also told slaves to behave: are we to believe that the Lincoln's presidency disobeyed God?) All in all, 2 stars is all I can give to this disappointing work.
Pure inspiration!  Nov 22, 2006
In reading over the reviews here I wonder if some have even read the book. Many are articulating things that are the opposite of what Bunny is saying in the book! She is not saying that either of the sexes are inferior. She is not saying that a woman shouldn't speak up within a marriage.

After reading this book I came to realise that the woman's position within a marriage is incredibly powerful...even possibly more powerful than the male's. Submission is one of the most dynamic and efficient things on earth because it ushered in our salvation. If Jesus had not been submissive to the Father...what then?

Her slogan, "Submission means God intervenes" is also dynamic. At an impass, when a woman 'submits' to her husband, she is really submitting to God as which point the husband is no longer dealing with his wife but with God. This gives the woman a place within marriage that is peaceful, secure and powerful.

One of the best books I have read!
I thought there was more help in this book  Jul 15, 2006
There are some statements that let me know that I am not alone as a newlywed in learning my new role, but nothing breakthrough or eye opening that I didn't already know or learn. The book is just as much about submitting to your boss as it is in marriage. I just needed something more radical, hence my 3 stars. I wanted to love it, but feel only lukewarm and completely unchanged after reading it. Submission isn't a problem for me, I just wanted more knowledge and support in growing into becoming and staying a Godly wife, led by a Godly man. Ehhh. Ehhh. I'm in the same place I was when before I read the book.
pathetic  Aug 18, 2005
This promotes the contemptible fetishes of male dominated society. Christian women need to get beyond this and real with God, not "spiritually" forced gender roles. I have had a great marriage with my husband for 11+ years now. I attend seminary & am in leadership with our church & in the community. Neither of us is resentful of the other, on the contrary, he often comments on how proud he is of me. So as female submission being a key to a great marriage goes...sounds like a big case of male pride to me. Focus on submitting to God more.
Women who take control don't trust their men, Nor God.  Oct 7, 2004
You people just don't get it. Men need to feel needed. A woman that takes control is telling him that she doesn't need him. An un-needed man is not a man. Emasculating him makes him weak. A Christian man will treat his submissive woman as his equal. But if she TAKES control, they will argue and fight for control their whole lives.

Those of you who claim to be happily married as equals, well, YOU are perfect examples of this book in practice!!! Think back when you first met this dream-boat. One of you was more afraid of breaking up. If it was you, then he was in charge. And he GAVE you control. I submit that you are equals with your husband because you subconsciously submitted and he ACTIVELY made you equals. This is natural. This is the way God intended it. It makes the man feel important. It makes the woman feel loved. It requires trust. But, well, who can you trust if not your spouse? How can the guy trust you if you don't trust him? Don't just disregard this neediness. It is a part of every man. He MUST feel needed. Feeling needed is as much a part of being a man as feeling attractive is a part of being a woman.
