Offering help and hope beyond the Twelve Steps, a groundbreaking guide evaluates various addictions and shares various addicts' stories, revealing how only enough love, grace, and redemption answers the desires that trap people. Original. 15,000 first printing.

Publishers Description
In an age of tell-all addiction memoirs and reality television programs, we gulp down the stories of others in the hope that we, too, can be overcomers-even as we continue to love a person, substance, activity, or ideology too much.
As Sharon Hersh writes, "We all suffer from the same condition." In "The Last Addiction, "she explores "why "we are prone to addiction-to make one thing in our lives more central than it should be-and how we can break free of our compulsions.
This is not a book of "self-help" answers or "how-to" steps. It is a book about falling down and getting up again, about realizing that we need more than ourselves to be saved. The truth is, we're not as bad as we think we are-and we are worse than we ever dreamed. When we live between those two realities, we are ready to let go of the last idol: the belief that we can save ourselves.
The Last Addiction" invites you to see your own story more clearly as you better understand your longing for intimacy. It invites you to love boldly and receive love in return. It invites you to the freedom of redemption.

A Must Have  Aug 9, 2009
This is an excellent book on addictions. It cuts to the heart of the details, options, and treatments. A great resource for Christians & non-christians.
Definitely a religion-centered book  Jul 30, 2009
First off, I admit, I did not read the "product description" information prior to ordering this book. If I had, I'd have seen that it's listed under Christian literature.

That said, the book is well-written with a compassionate voice.

However, the book doesn't deal much with how to deal with addiction. The entire book basically says "addicts must surrender their problems to Jesus."

If you're not religious or not Christian (I am not), then this probably isn't the book for you. I'd recommend The Holy Longing - it takes a spritual approach, without being so preachy.
Full of Compassion and Truth  Jun 16, 2009
This book doesn't approach addiction like many do, where they explain your problem, tell you how to fix it, then suggest that you'll be a different person. It seems to suggest that it's a journey of transformation and reformation where your greatest weaknesses are actually the places where God enters into your life. This book, in it's essence, is real; it's not super-spiritual or condemning and doesn't expect you to have it all together in order to be helped, but rather assumes that by not having it together at all you're in the exact place where help can come in. Anyways, she explains it a lot better than I do.
worth re-reading  Apr 28, 2009
I am rating 4 stars after the first read. I want to re-read the book though to be sure I learn more about the last addiction. It's quite a different approach to addiction and I think it is worth the investment of time and money. I might even go 5 stars after it all sinks in!
Sharon Lives Her Message  Sep 15, 2008
The Last Addiction is not only everything described in the preceding comments: powerful, useful for everyone, grounded in Scripture, transformational and true. It is also an authentic reflection of its writer. I have known Sharon Hersh for some time and was thrilled to see her message on addiction find a broader audience through this book. Sharon challenges the conventional wisdom that addiction is to be "managed" or "overcome" and also challenges the post-modern critique that we know too much to need Jesus. She is comfortably within the forged path of Jesus' third way - neither a way of religious control, nor a way of self-immolating narcissism, she goes down the path of Jesus where we must die to live, where we must put our hearts out in the open air and have our deepest desires be brushed by the wind of the Holy Spirit.
This book is not for addicts. This book is for those whose hearts cannot be satisfied, some of whom may have tried to find satisfaction in addiction. If you don't understand the distinction, then this book should be next in line on your reading list.
