One of the best historical novels of the year  Feb 19, 2008
Charlotte Lamb is a vicar's daughter who's committed a ghastly sin: become pregnant out of wedlock. Banished by her father and sister, she arrives at Milkweed Manor, a place where other young women in trouble live. There she learns about what being pregnant is really like, the life of a nursemaid and what happens to unwanted babies. While there, Charlotte meets with a old family friend, Dr. Taylor, who is hiding a secret of his own. Just when Charlotte thinks her life couldn't get any worse, she has to give up the one thing that means everything to her...

I never realized what the life of a nursemaid was like. In fact I just figured that nurses just helped out mothers who did not want to nurse. This book showed me there is so much more than that. It was quite interesting to read about all the guidelines and standards a nurse was supposed to have. Since I'm a history major, I relished all the details about the time period. Learning about the houses where unmarried pregnant girls went to was highly educational. I felt sorry for Charlotte throughout the book. It seemed that her life was destined to be nothing but despair for her. Throughout the novel, the reader keeps hoping that a glimmer of hope will work its way into her life. It was obvious that a lot of historical research had been done for this book and it shows. The tidbits about nursing and milkweeds at the beginning of each chapter were informative and helped to give more insight into the story. Also of interest was the way that postpartum depression was handled in the 19th century. I loved that the setting was set during the regency area. It brought to mind images of Jane Austen and Jane Eyre. I could totally see this book being made into a movie. There's so much emotion in this book that would project wonderfully in live action. This was an excellent first novel and one of the best historical novels I've read this year. I am looking forward to Julie Klassen's next book. HIGHLY recommended.
Excellent Book!  Feb 10, 2008
I loved this book! Christian fiction is my genre, but too many authors now (Lori Wick, Karen Kingbury, et al) are becoming predictable and lame. This is a great, fresh new read. I love it and predict you will too!
Excellent, an NOT your typical romance fiction  Feb 9, 2008
I just have to say, being an avid fiction reader, this book was refreshingly different, not your typical run of the mill christian romance novel. It was interesting and had me guessing till the end how it would end with the main characters, and I wasn't disappointed. This one is definately a good one to purchase. You wont be disappointed either!
Quietly compelling  Feb 2, 2008
Even today, the unexpected pregnancy of a young unmarried woman brings abundant trauma--but 200 years ago? "Lady of Milkweed Manor" is a carefully researched, at times startling, tale of Charlotte Lamb, rejected by her unforgiving family in early 19th-century rural England. Although I'm a busy editor in Berkeley (not a friend or relative) and not especially interested in historical fiction, I could barely put this one down. It's long, just over 400 pages, and I certainly wouldn't describe it as a romance.
Loved this regency!  Jan 27, 2008
This is truly one of the most emotionally gripping novels I've ever read and it is sure to make my best of 2008 list. My heart pounded with anticipation so many times I lost count. Just when I thought I knew what would happen next, something different took place. The author did an amazing job pulling the reader into Charlotte's life. I longed for her happiness. And there were so many powerful subplots that my head is still swimming with amazement, and my heart is still gripped by this strangely sad, yet hopeful and deeply romantic tale of love and loss, of sacrifice and reward. Bottom line...This story is so full of passion that it will make your heart sing.

Best of all, Lady of Milkweed Manor shows in a tangible and emotionally gratifying way how all things do work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. The element of sacrificial love in this poignant novel is so incredibly powerful that it will stick with me for years to come. I am so impressed with this author's "voice" and her ability to draw my heart into a story that I plan to read every books she pens from this day forward. I highly recommend this story. If you take my advice, you'll see why.
