A Lady of Hidden Intent  Mar 19, 2010
This was a new twist on the age-old Cinderella story, complete with a ball, a rich girl turned servant, and a "prince" to come to her rescue. It was fun to read, but not one to leave a lasting impression.

The Prologue is very well written and draws the reader in, with English Catherine Newbury's first encounter with the American Carter Danby in 1850. She is hardly more than a girl and Mr. Danby is there as a student of architecture. They are immediately attracted to each other (but do not admit it to each other) but live worlds apart and they never plan to see each other again.

Five years later, Miss Newbury has taken on a new last name to remain anonymous as she works as a seamstress in Philadelphia, trying to earn money to help her falsely imprisoned father. Just so happens, that is where Mr. Danby lives. When he goes with his mother and sister for a meeting with the renowned dress designer, he is certain he has seen her before - but her name doesn't ring a bell. He takes it upon himself to be her hero and to win her affections, while she is caught up with the past and trying to figure out a way to help her father and not bring any needless attention to herself.

What follows is a predictable and somewhat disappointing story line. There aren't intrigues for the reader; rather the characters don't communicate well, and keep each other in the dark, when it all could have been resolved much sooner. There is one chance of danger to Miss Newbury when a jealous co-worker wants to get revenge, but it all comes to naught when it ends in empty threats.

This is the first time I have read any Tracie Peterson book. My overall opinion is that she is a gifted writer, but not the best at developing deep, interesting plots. I was not sorry to have read this book; I enjoyed it. It was a very light read, so just don't expect any sudden twists and turns. I have another Tracie Peterson book to read because I think she is a talented writer and I believe she can do better!
Uninteresting  Feb 25, 2010
I have to admit I was disappointed in this read from Tracie Peterson. I've liked her books in the past, but "A Lady of High Regard" lacked interest and was incredibly predictable. Within the first chapter I basically already had the ending figured out. An OK book to check out at the library, but don't waste money on it.
Not My Favorite Tracie Peterson  Nov 24, 2009
Although I enjoyed the story of rich girl turned poor and then fighting back to make a name for herself, I felt the book dragged in spots. It was filled with details of things that I thought were of little importance to the story (for example, the meeting at the seamstress shop discussing hours, wages, etc.) I also would prefer to have a little more interaction between the two main characters before a declaration of love. I felt Carter hardly knew her when he started making references of a future life together especially when she wasn't even friendly to him and hardly smiled or spoke during their brief meetings.

Overall, it is a good read but not my favorite Tracie Peterson book. I enjoyed her Westward Chronicles series much more.
Ladies of Liberty Book Two  Jun 18, 2009
Now, this book captured my attention right from the very beginning where book one was very difficult for me to get started even though I loved it once I did get into it. This book was a joy from beginning to end! This book started out saddly with Catherine overhearing a conversation between her father and her father's partner. Realizing that her father's partner had actually done some things that would send them to prison without her father's knowledge ... it ends up that the partner (of course) skips the country, and her father at least gets enough warning that he sends Catherine and two of their trusted servants from England to America to keep Catherine safe. Her father feels that he needs to stay in England to try to prove his innocence but does not want her in harm's way during this process, which turns out to be a very good thing as he ends up in prison for years. During this time, Catherine takes on the servants last names and pretends that they are her parents for fear of her being sent back to England and being forced to spend time in prison as her father has done for something that he did not do. During this time, Catherine makes a name for herself as a very talented designer and ends up running into a man, who is an attorney, Carter, and has contacts in England, that she previously briefly met while she was a wealthy young woman in England. Where it takes some time he eventually realizes who she is and works to help find her father innocent and release him. Add to this a jealous young woman who feels like she is not getting the recognition she deserves and this makes for a very interesting fairly fast paced book that you really don't want to put down. Another excellent Tracie Peterson book and I could not wait to start book three after reading this one!
Entertaining, easy read  Jun 12, 2009
Growing up wealthy and privileged in Bath, England, Catherine Newbury's life changes forever, when her father is falsely imprisoned and his lands and fortune seized. Her own life in danger, Catherine is sent to America with her family's trusted servants. She must hide her identity and carve out a new life for herself. She becomes an accomplished seamstress and dress designer, with her patterns and designs sought by all. All the while, Catherine saves her money, hoping to save enough to help free her father.

When Catherine meets Carter Danby, a young man she'd met several years earlier when he toured England, she worries that her family's secrets will be revealed. She trusts that her faith in God will provide a way for her to help her father and, perhaps, find her way to true love.

Like the first book in the series A Lady of High Regard, this was a fun, historical read. It's a complete stand alone book, however, and they need not be read in order. I really liked Catherine and Carter. Christian without being overly preachy, the characters are likeable and the story is interesting.

A entertaining, yet easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
