More About Thompson Frank C

Kirkbride Bible Company Dr. Frank Charles Thompson was a young preacher in the late 1800s when he became disappointed with the reference Bibles being sold to preachers. Dr. Thompson believed the Bible should be presented in a simple, but scholarly way. He saw the need for a well-organized reference Bible that would be of practical use to the layman as well as a minister.

In 1890, Dr. Thompson began the work he would continue for the rest of his life. He completed the "thought suggestions" opposite the verses throughout the Bible. These are what became the "chain-links" that are the heart of the Thompson system. Some of the men in Dr. Thompson's church saw his Bible and told him this would be a great help to them in their Bible study too. They encouraged Dr. Thompson to have his Bible, with marginal references, published so that everyone could enjoy the blessing of this helpful study tool.

In 1908, the first edition of the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible® was printed by Methodists Book Concern of Dobbs Ferry, New York. It became known as the most helpful, trustworthy and unbiased study Bible available. The Thompson® Bible continues to have that reputation today.

In 1913, Dr. Thompson joined with B.B. Kirkbride in Indianapolis, Indiana to form the Kirkbride Bible Company. This was to assure the constant improvement of this remarkable study tool, and the widest distribution possible.

Today, the Thompson® Chain-Reference® Study System offers you a complete study library in one volume. With over 78 practical features for in depth Scriptural appreciation and understanding, nothing can match what the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible® offers:
  • Over 100,000 topical references
  • Over 8,000 Chain Topics
  • Updated Archaeological Supplement with photos and maps
  • Outline studies of each book of the Bible
  • Journey maps and Bible harmonies
  • Biblical Atlas

Get the New King James version of the Thompson Chain   Jul 25, 2005
The New King James Version of the Thompson Chain Reference Bible is superior to the other versions available (i.e. the New International Version, the New American Standard Bible, and the Authorized King James Version)!

The NKJV edition is the only one (so far) that has been updated and revised. It is better organized that the other Bibles, and contains many additional features.

I like all four of the aforementioned translations, so I had a hard time deciding which version to get. After examining all four editions at length (at the Christian Bookstore) I decided to purchase the NKJV.

The NKJV, it should be noted, has approximately five hundred pages more than the NIV. Part of the reason is that the actual text of the Bible requires additional pages (the NIV is known for its "economy of words," one might say).

However, even taking that factor into account, the primary reason the NKJV is quite a bit longer is that it includes many more helpful resources than the NIV edition does.

Therefore, unless you simply WILL NOT USE this particular translation, I'd advise you to purchase the NKJV Thompson.
A Plus For The Thompson Chain Bible  Jul 14, 2005
I am a Pastor and I use several study bibles. All of them have a lot to offer in their own right, but the Thompson Chain Bible became my jewel of them all. It is very unique. There are no notes but just references that lead you in a thourough research of a topic. You come to your own conclusions.

I was greatly helped when my wife gave me the Large Print KJV version. I had a NKJV version already that I loved. The KJV has better instructions on how to use the Thompson Chain Ref. Bible. I began to notice the different types of Chains, Topical, Historical, Biographical, Present Day Facts, and Ancient findings. (THBPA Chains in short!) I found out that a lot of the information in the annotated bibles could also be found in the helps in the back of the Thompson Chain Bible if I wanted to look them up. Also beside the verses are pilot numbers that may refer you to Topics or Analytical information in the Helps that give a lot of facts. The archeological section is keyed to certain text in the scriptures also. You can find a lot of data by knowing what chain numbers cover what information in the back. By following the chains that refer to the trees of the life of Jesus, Moses, and Paul, you can trace the gradual progression of their lives. The Charts in the Helps section are better that the snap-shot maps in the newer study bibles because they cover the entire life of a persons journeys and travels in sequential order.

This bible if understood and used fully can be an effective stand alone bible. The Atlas and Maps are the best layout I have ever seen. The KJV Concordance is great because it also links words to the Index numbers. (I did not see this integration in the NKJV TCRB, to my dismay.)

The book outlines are great, espcially in the NKJV. The format is more detailed and precise.

There are many more references in the NKJV format also. No incomplete chains!

The NKJV also has better print of Old Testament Passages quoted in the New Testament. The NKJV list every verse and where it is found in the Old Testament.

I put together my own Theological Chain Section in the back of my NKJV TCRB. All of the Chains about God, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, The Inspiration of the Bible, Salvation,.....I put in my own Theological Index Page. What a study! I will email it to those who email me for it.

In Summary, A Great Bible! 5 Stars
Very disappointed in their customer service  Feb 15, 2005
I purchased a Thompson with a morocco cover. In the past I have also purchased Thompson products as gifts because I was always impressed with their quality and the Kirkbride company that publishes it is located in my state. I was generally satisfied with this Bible although I find the almost 1000 pages in the back to be mostly of little value. They need to put out an edition with only the chain system and leave all of that other commentary out. It makes the Bible almost too big to be practical for carrying around. I use it mainly for desk reference.

The chain system is unique and very useful. I never used any of the rest of the "helps" in the back.

After a short time of owning this Bible I noticed that the leather was cracking and chipping off around the edges. Also the gold page edging was turning colors and coming off. I contacted Kirkbride, the publisher. First off, it took them several days and much persistance on my part before someone would talk to me. Finally some junior salesperson responded and sent me an email. He told me that their guarantee was not lifetime and that it only covered defects that you noticed right away. He then sent me an email with a lot of questions in it which I responded with the answers. I told them that I was not looking for a free replacement because I had used the Bible and did not think that was fair. I would have been satisfied with any accomodation that they thought was fair. Evidently they think that nothing is fair because I never heard another word from anyone.

So I would say, beware of their quality and that the publisher doesn't stand behind their guarantee. I would have been satisfied with a 10% discount. But I guess they would rather loose a faithful customer. I will NOT be purchasing another Kirkbride product.
Get what you pay for  Feb 14, 2005
Noticed many are not satisfied with the paper/binding of their Thompson Chain Bible.

I bought the NKJV in black Genuine leather. Very happy with it. In fact I'm thinking about replacing it with the Morocco Leather version. A even softer premium leather.

Many years ago I notated my Bibles with ink. I now use a .7mm mechanical pencil. I can then erase and update much easier.

Spend the extra money and buy the best version. You'll enjoy it for years to come.............
Thompson Chain NASB still one of the best!  Jan 28, 2005
To be most helpful to you, I have included information about Thompson Bibles in general, and about the NASB in particular.

My Bibles get used every day, so when I decide to replace one it needs to be something that is going to last. After looking at Bibles for three days at various bookstores, I recently bought a Thompson Chain NASB. I love it.

The page layout is very pleasant to the eye. While I don't agree that the Thompson Chain system is totally free of denominational bias, it is pretty close. If you don't want to use the Thompson study system, it sits unobtrusively off to the side of the page. Chances are though, you'll use it a lot. Other Bibles I've seen give you about one third of each page with some commentator's opinion of what he thinks God's word says, which gets kind of annoying. Plenty of textual notes (refering to manuscript issues) are provided in this version.

About the construction: My first Thompson Chain was a NIV with bonded leather. I bought it in 1985 and it's still holding up. My new one is the genuine leather and should hold up just as well. I've seen other reviews where people complain about shoddy workmanship, cheap paper, or the fact that its printed offshore. My 1985 version was printed in Canada (not US) has similarly thin paper, and has held up just fine. I think that this one will also. Unlike some of my other similarly priced study Bibles, the leather on this Thompson Chain NASB was not shiny. It has kind of somewhere between shiny and satin, but quite attractive. Inside both covers there are plenty of blank pages for notes.

I also have the NIV version ISBN 088707166X, the KJV version, and the NKJV all of which I have purchased in the last six months. The NIV version is thinner and easier to carry due to the print being smaller, and the fact that the NIV contains less textual notes. The helps in the back of the Bible are the same, but the concordance in the NIV is better than the concordance is the NASB. The NKJV is the biggest and heaviest of all. Surprisingly, my new Thompson Chain NIV, KJV, and NKJV are printed in the USA. (The NASB Thompsons are printed in South Korea.)

The KJV Thompson is the thinnest version available at a mere 1923 pages. It's concordance is the best of the Thompsons. There are no textual notes in this version. In other words, there is nothing to alert you that different manuscripts don't contain the longer ending in Mark, all of 1 John 5:7, or Acts 8:37. The paper in this version appears to be different (not as smooth) than that found in the others.

Like I stated earlier, I compared Bibles for 3 days and ended up going back with a Thompson. The only other Bibles in the same league are the old version Scofield (not availible in NASB), and the Open Bible (which I also have). The only things that I would like to see improved are the concordance, and the introduction/background information for each book of the Bible. Don't get me wrong, the concordance is decent, but since everything else about this Bible is excellant it would be nice to have a concordance that is on a par with the rest of this Bible. My guess is that they went light on the concordance to make room for the excellant indexes/helps/archelogical suppplements. Having said that, this is still about as big of a Bible as you would want to carry as it is fairly heavy!

While the NASB isn't a large print Bible, it has the largest cleanest type of the Thompsons. Its concordance leaves some things to be desired. If you need an excellant concordance, and the size of the type isn't a huge consideration for you, give the NIV version Thompson Chain a look.

If you like the NASB your choices are somewhat limited when looking for a serious study Bible. When shopping for that new study Bible, try out a Thompson. Chances are, in the NASB the Thompson Chain is your best bet.
