They are often mistakenly considered God s rules his outdated list of do s and don ts that add up to a guilt-ridden, legalistic way of life. But as beloved author and Bible scholar J. I. Packer probes the purpose and true meaning of the Ten Commandments, readers will gladly discover that these precepts can aptly be called God s design for the best life possible. | The Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount are another of my favorites to study and share with others. | | | | "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." - John 14:15 Dec 22, 2009 |
Mr. Packer makes the case for obedience to God for a more rewarding life. Nowhere does he say these "works" will bring the reward of salvation. Which of the 10 commandments is so distasteful that one should bristle against it? No other gods before Him? No worship of idols? Not taking His name in vain? Observance of worship? Honor of father and mother? No murder? No adultery? No stealing? No false witness? No coveting? Faith is not a license to disobedience to the One who has given the gift of eternal life in heaven. "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome." - 1John 5:3 | | | | put your hope and faith in Jesus, NOT in the LAW Nov 25, 2009 |
| I can't understand how such respected man of God has failed to understand the basic Gospel... This book is based on heresy from start to finish, on the heresy that the law is what will make people holy and righteous. Righteousness is only and ever a free gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ and his finished work on the Cross. The 10 commandments is the ministry of condenmation and death (2 cor. 3) and was NEVER meant to help this world get better! If keeping the 10 commandments were possible (which it is not) and that were the basis for our hope, then why did Jesus come? Jesus kept the 10 commandments, suffered the wrath of God for all our sin and set us free from the law of sin and death! Forget about keeping the commandments, keep the faith! | | | Write your own review about Keeping the Ten Commandments
