Item Description...
International Justice Mission president Gary Haugen has found that "the pathway out of a nearly comatose state of boredom, ineffectiveness and triviality lies in the struggle for justice." The truth and stories presented here will call you out of an unsatisfying ho-hum Christian life and into the adventure of seeing God work in powerful and miraculous ways.

Publishers Description
"There must be more to the Christian life than this--more than church each Sunday and waving to my neighbors and giving some clothes to Goodwill when I go through my closet each spring." These aren't bad things, of course. But they're safe and comfortable and easy. And there's a reason they're not satisfying your desire for something more significant and meaningful--we're created by God for adventure. International Justice Mission president Gary Haugen has found that engaging in the fight for justice is the most deeply satisfying way of life. This book shows how we too can be a part of God's great expedition.

Being Brave and Not Safe - I love it!  Jan 12, 2010
If you want to stay safe and just be a church attendee, this book is probably not for you. But if you want to go on an adventure and make a difference with your life as you follow Christ, you will devour this book. I did. It spoke to my soul and gave me great encouragement as it refreshed my resolve to be brave and follow Christ in what I call "point of need ministry."

I love when Haugen talks about the great commandment of loving God and people. How can we love God who we can not see when we don't love our neighbor who we do see? If we love our neighbor who we do see, we will follow Jesus and seek justice for them. This will cost us something. It will require action from us as we do something with our life to make a difference for those who are oppressed.

My favorite chapter in the book is titled "Would You Rather be Safe or Brave?" You can be a Christian and be safe, but you can not be safe and follow Christ. To follow Christ you must be brave because it may cost you your life. It just takes courage.
Thought-Provoking  Dec 9, 2009
I spent over three hours listening to this free audiobook from the Christian audio store and learned a great deal about the horrors of slavery and sexual exploitation that exist in many third world countries. Additionally, I learned a lot about Gary Haugen's organization, International Justice Mission, a Christian human rights agency that fights these and other forms of violent oppression while attempting to rekindle the social engagement of evangelical Christians. Just Courage reminded me a little of another audiobook that I recently listened to - Francis Chan's Crazy Love.* Both books have a message of breaking free from the comforts of the status quo and having an authentic faith that confronts the sins of the world with solid, even far-reaching, solutions. I find the significant amount of daily time that ICM spends in corporate prayer to be commendable, but I strongly disagree with some of the theology of the various people mentioned in the book or endorsing the book. Despite that, Just Courage reminded that I must not just believe the words of Isaiah 1:17, but that I must be a courageous doer of the Word. "learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause."

* After writing this book review, Christianity Today posted an article about Francis Chan called Crazy Passion. Through the article I found out that Chan donates much of his book royalties (which total about half a million dollars) primarily to organizations like Haugen's International Justice Mission.
What a real follower of Jesus does  Dec 5, 2009
Anyone who has ever wondered whether there is more to the Christian life than the sorts of things offered by a normal church experience in a typical Western country will find much to think about in Gary Haugen's challenging book. It is only a short book, but it does not take many pages for the author to issue a comprehensive challenge to the way in which most Christians live their lives.

Most of us are going on the journey but missing the adventure. 150 years ago, John Stuart Mill observed that Christians seem to have the ability to say the most wonderful things without actually believing them, things like "blessed are the poor and humble", "it's better to give than receive", "judge not, lest you be judged", and "love your neighbour as yourself". How different would life be if we acted on these words, rather than just repeating them?

Haugen's book tells some of the story of his International Justice Mission organisation, and the challenges which he has faced in confronting the powers of evil in the world. But more than just being the story of the author and other courageous individiuals, the book is a challenge to every reader who yearns "for liberation from small and trivial things, to experience the passion and the power of God on the more jagged edges of faith". According to the book, the call to be a follower of Jesus is a call to join the struggle for justice in the world, something which requires bravery rather than safety, and something which cannot be done without relying on God. I highly recommend this book.
Great Synopsis of Biblical Justice for Today  Oct 17, 2009
This book provides a compelling argument for the evangelical Christian's engagement in social justice. IJM's founder, Gary Haugen provides a wonderful synopsis of the role of justice throughout Scripture and through it God's call to justice for each and every Christian. The author makes his argument even more compelling by drawing on the common experience of so many, whether privileged or oppressed: parenting. Through sharing his own stories of parenting and contrasting them those of parents locked within human trafficking, he draws the reader into a common human experience and through this challenging the reader to stand up for these kinds of families across the globe. For me, the most profound achievement of this book is Haugen's connection between violence and justice. In brief, Haugen assesses that violence equates the absence of justice. Much of the book is a promotion of IJM's work. But it is good work, worthy of further exposure.
This book is in my top 5 books - ever!  Sep 8, 2009
This is a fantastic book - I am working to get a copy into the hands of everyone I know! You will be educated and exhorted regarding the world of social justice and why it is so imperative that we "get in the game". I cant recommend it enough!
