Item Description...
Christmas is nearly everyone's favorite time of the year because it is adorned with so many special celebrations, happy memories, delightful stories, wonderful songs, and rich recipes. A season of selfless giving and expressive love, it is a time for family togetherness, for snuggling up to the hearthside, for recalling the legends and fables, and for celebrating the things that matter most. As a result, Christmas has been the focus of some of the greatest art, music, literature, and ideas of all time. Christmas Spirit captures the essence of the Yuletide season by gathering in one place all of those elements that contribute to the joyous spirit of Christmas. From the origins of our most cherished holiday traditions and rituals to the insights of the wisest men and women of the ages on their essential meaning and significance, Christmas Spirit emphasizes and underscores the best moments of the season. Here are the whys and wherefores of mistletoe, plum pudding, holly and ivy, Advent wreaths, nativity scenes, caroling, sleigh rides, Christmas trees, jingle bells, wassailing, Twelfth night, twinkling lights, gift giving, and Saint Nicholas. In short, here is the joy of the season - the Christmas Spirit.

Publishers Description
Joy to the World tells the stories behind some of the most wonderful and best-loved songs of the season that express the spiritual sentiments of Christmas. While many other Christmas songs celebrate home and family, romance, and winter weather, the songs whose stories are told here express the underlying reality of the Christmas season between Advent and Epiphany -- the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

The songs in Joy to the World are among the most enduring and permanent of the season's musical traditions. They have stood the test of time and express the many moods and emotions that evoke the spiritual significance of Christmas. Reflecting many eras and different cultures, Joy to the World reveals their origins, the reasons why they were written, and why they are so beloved. The book is organized into six sections of Christmas songs and carols from the Americas, England and Ireland, France and Spain, Germany and Austria, and Greece and Rome, and classical Christmas music.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Authors needed to do further research  Apr 2, 2007
I wanted to be able to say that this is a great book, but based on the misinformation regarding "Silent Night," it certainly doesn't deserve a good recommendation.

There are seven pages about the world's best-loved Christmas carol, but the authors of this book, Albert and Shirley Menendez, didn't do their homework. They claim that the story of "Silent Night" begins in 1818. Wrong! The story begins in 1816 because that's when Joseph Mohr wrote his six-stanza German-language poem, not 1818 as claimed by the authors. It was in 1818 that the music was added to Mohr's poem.

The authors describe Oberndorf, where the carol was first sung, as "a lovely mountainous village." If you visit Oberndorf, I suppose you would see a mountain in the distance if there were a ten story building where you could look out from the top. The town is on a river plain. When they built the "Silent Night" chapel in the mid-20th century, they had to truck in loads of dirt to build a hill.

The book goes on to say that the church organ was broken. Historians have found no records to back up this claim.

Further on, the authors come to John Freeman Young, the man who translated three of Mohr's German-language verses into the English verses that we know. They say his translation was done in 1863. Wrong! "Silent Night" is in the book "Carols For Christmas Tide," edited by J. Freeman Young and published in 1859. The information is out there, but it takes a good researcher to find it.

The authors add a fourth English verse to John Young's three English verses. This is not the first time that this verse has been erroneously attributed to Bishop Young. The website Hymns and Carols of Christmas dot-com has a picture of the page from John Young's 1859 book for anyone who wants to see the accurate information.

"Joy to the World: Sacred Christmas Songs Through the Ages" is set up so that you can read a bit here and a bit there. It's a nice size for reading on a bus or plane. Unfortunately you don't know how much is accurate. Did the authors do their homework on other portions of the book?
