Item Description...
When did the church become our refuge from the world? How did it happen that the church became the place we went when trying to get away from those we are supposed to be trying to reach? How did we ever become convinced that lost people remain lost because they will not come to church, rather than because followers of Christ refuse to live the gospel while sharing the gospel with them? For various reasons, many church leaders today have a tendency to ignore the value of understanding the changing times. Others simply preach against the changing seasons, as if by doing so they will prevent the times from coming. In JOURNEYS: Transitioning Churches to Relevance, Pastors Todd Wright and Marty Duren share candidly about the road they each traveled as they labored to bring their churches to a place of significance and cultural relevance. Wright and Duren speak candidly about their struggles and their own pharisaical attitudes that for years kept them from experiencing lives lived on mission with Jesus Christ. JOURNEYS is about seeing every encounter as a divine appointment to somehow bring Jesus to the surface of life. It is a challenge issued to the church to intentionally find areas of need in their communities to be the eyes, ears, heart, and hands of Jesus. Lots of people can tell you what to do. Some can do so through research, others through personal observation, and still others through their intuition. In JOURNEYS: Transitioning Churches To Relevance, Marty and Todd take us on a journey and tell us a story-and it is a worthwhile journey and a moving story. Instead of telling you what to do, Marty and Todd tell their journey from religious role-playing to personal transformation.andfrom personal transformation to fresh expressions of mission and ministry in their churches. I found myself engaged and challenged and believe you will as well. - Ed Stetzer, co-author of Comeback Churches and Compelled by Love

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not Only for Pastors  Apr 7, 2008
As indicated by the other reviews, this book is directly applicable to pastors and church leaders who are leading their churches through transitionary periods. I am not a pastor and my church has already undergone a transition; however, this was a very useful book to me because it helped me better understand what pastors go through while leading a church.

We tend to think of our pastors as unshakable leaders who go forward without questioning their leadership ability and vision. The authors presented their stories in an authentic, vulnerable way that made me realize that all of our pastors are real human beings who live in the same fallen world in which I live and it is imporant for me to encourage them as they lead their flocks. This book is enlightening, well-written, engaging, and has applications that extend to other cultural channels. If our business and political leaders could be as transparent, honest, and brave as the authors of this book, our world would be a better place.
The Journey ends well!  Feb 27, 2008
Sometime ago I heard that my friend, Marty Duren, was working together with another pastor, Todd Wright, to author a book on helping churches transition to relevancy. While I was excited about reading the book because of my relationship with Marty and my appreciation for his writing prowess, I was interested to find out just how powerful the content of the book would be. Marty sent me a pre-release copy a few weeks ago to read and review. I opened it up that night as I settled into bed and ended up staying up through the night to read the entire book. I literally could not put it down!

Journeys :: Transitioning Churches to Relevance is a dynamic book that tells the story of two churches who struggled with their current modes of church life as they searched for greater significance and impact in their community. Every other chapter is written by each of the authors and the process of moving back and forth between the two church's stories helps grab your attention and build excitement for the conclusion of the book.

As I read through the pages of the book I was constantly reminded of the same internal struggles that I have dealt with for some time now over what appears to be the inefficiencies of the American church. It was encouraging to me to hear that many of the transitions that the authors experienced were personal before they could be corporate, and even though these struggles were painful to process, I am convinced that more of our pastors need to go through a similar transition or our churches are going to continue to diminish in impact and influence for the Kingdom of God.

If you are a pastor in an existing church I would highly recommend that you get a copy of this book and consider the content. What I particularly found helpful in the book was the transparency of the authors to reveal not only the heart changes that God orchestrated to bring them to the place where transitions could happen, they also spare no detail of the personal struggles and even failures that accompanied their journey. Reading through those experiences help to confirm the reality that this transition is not easy but is possible in each church.

The book features the writing of two pastors, Duren and Wright, both of whom pastor in Georgia which is even more helpful because if this transition can occur in Georgia Southern Baptist churches, it's possible anywhere. :-) The stories of New Bethany Church in Buford, GA and Midway Church in Villa Rica, GA are enjoyable and educational, not to mention encouraging.

This book is a must read as far as I'm concerned.
Not what to do, but how we did it  Feb 27, 2008
Marty Duren, along with his long time friend Pastor Todd Wright, have written a book now available from Missional Press.

The book has been lauded by Ed Stetzer (whose quote appears on the front cover), Frank Page, Dan Southerland and others. Let me add my words to theirs.

Wright and Duren alternate chapters in telling the stories of their churches' transitions from conventional to a culturally engaged congregations in the south. Artfully and sometimes brutally telling of their struggles to overcome the barriers of a dying church culture, they tell of racism, power plays, honest confrontation, vision casting, personal introspection, compelling passion and the victories that have begun to gain momentum in their local churches.

I was struck by the back and forth of the alternating chapters that reminded me of great literature that would weave a story from several locations. The chapters coincide with one another, addressing similar themes, though there are marked differences in the stories.

I recommend this book to everyone, whether or not you are considering a change in your church's structure. To understand what is motivating such changes is necessary for every church.

This book will challenge every reader and their understanding of what their actual church could be. It is not a book on theory. It is a book that will allow you to picture your church in your mind when thinking about the nitty gritty of accomplishing the Mission of God in the world.
