Insight I Needed  Nov 27, 2009
I've read a number of books about raising strong-willed children, none of them has given me insight in my children nearly as much as Kenda, Aaron, and John Smiley's book Journey of a Strong-Willed Child.

First, let's be clear. Despite what some say, not all children are strong-willed. A strong-willed child doesn't just want her way, she wants to be in control of every aspect of her life. As the authors wisely state: "The strong-willed child will choose the stated punishment in order to be in control, especially if the child considers the punishment moderate...A strong-willed child may choose to miss a party, not get dessert, or be sent to his room, because those things are really no big deal. A guilt-ridden parent (this is a false guilt induced by the strong-willed child) is not likely to choose to fight that particular battle again. The child is now running the show. The strong-willed child has chosen a small sacrifice for a big payoff."

Wow. My preschooler to a T.

So how did the Smiley's get so smart? One day some friends with a strong-willed child visited, seeking advice. Unexpectedly, one of their children (then in college) dropped by. The family friends were shocked when they'd begin telling a story about their strong-willed child and Aaron was easily able to finish the tale. You see, Aaron had unique insight into the strong-willed child. It hadn't been so long ago that he was one.

It's Aaron's insights that make this book truly unique and helpful.

Two other gems I found particularly helpful:

* Strong-willed children usually have a black and white sense of right and wrong, justice and injustice. Often, their strong-willed tendencies are magnified if they think someone has been wronged. In fact, if they were adults, and we shared their sense of justice, we'd be cheering them on as heros!

* All children appreciate honesty from adults, answers like "I don't know, but let's find out." But strong-willed children are especially appreciative. In fact, strong-willed children can spot an immature adult from a mile away - and will try to assert themselves over him or her.

The book is divided into chapters covering the various stages of childhood: birth to pre-K, Kindergarten to 6th grade, Jr. High, High School, and College. In each chapter, mom Kendra discusses pertinent points for parents, such as consistencies in disciple, helping your child make his strong-willed nature an asset, and (as a parent) keeping encouraged. Next, former strong-willed child Aaron adds his own, unique insights. Finally, dad John offers a little extra parental wisdom.

Although there is some how-to information included (like how to cope with teachers who don't understand strong-willed kids, how to prevent sibling rivalry when you have a strong-willed child, and so on), I find this book is especially useful as a guide to how your strong-willed child thinks. The focus in on the long-term picture: Helping your child to Christ - and to a productive, content life.

This book is encouraging, insightful, eye-opening, and liberating. I highly recommend it.

Where was this book when I was raising mine? Oh, he was growing up!  Jul 21, 2009
As the mother of a strong-willed child, and having read many books on the subject, I am so impressed with this book. The big difference in this book is that it is written by the mother of the strong-willed child AND the strong-willed child as an adult.
Kendra Smiley writes in a very readable way. Her narrative is interesting and clear, particularly regarding discipline. She tells where they made mistakes, and how they corrected them, and how parents need to be a cohesive unit.
What really blew me away, however, was reading Aaron's part of the book and hearing his perspective. There are things I never knew about how the strong-willed child is thinking and, thus, reacting.
You just have to read it for yourself. I can not recommend this book enough for the parent of a strong-willed child. I wish this book was around when my daughter was young, but, alas, Aaron was growing up!
Encouragement for the weary  Jul 14, 2009
As the mother of a strong-willed child, I was eager to read Kendra Smiley's book, Journey of a Strong-Willed Child. I have gleaned from a plethora of child-training books, which often fail to give solid, Christian advice on raising a strong willed child. Journey of a Strong-Willed Child is written by John and Kendra Smiley, who have learned many lessons while raising a strong-willed child of their own. A highlight of this book is that the Smiley's son, Aaron, shares his experiences as a strong-willed person.Journey of a Strong-Willed Child is divided into chapters giving parenting tips from birth to beyond college.
One of my favorite aspects of Journey of a Strong-Willed Child is the Smiley's practical advice on how to encourage unity amongst siblings, rather than a lack of harmony. The Smiley's exhort parents to reduce competition amongst siblings, as much as possible, since this is the most common source of sibling rivalry.
If you have a strong-willed child, I highly encourage you to read this book for some practical, Christ-centered inspiration. The Smiley's know what it is like to experience both the frustrations and the blessings of a strong-willed child. They humbly share tips on encouraging, rather than discouraging strong-willed children. The Smiley's dispel common myths about strong-willed children, and show how to cast a purposeful life-vision, for your child. What a blessing to "hear counsel, and receive instruction" (Proverbs 19:20) from an older Christian couple, who have learned much, in raising a strong-willed child for the Lord.
Reassurance for parents of strong-willed kids!  Jun 3, 2009
As the parent of an extremely strong-willed 5 year old boy, I found this book very reassuring and helpful. I've read over 50 parenting books in the past few years, and this was the first and only one that actually helped me understand WHY my son does what he does. Having the perspective of Aaron (the son) was very enlightening - and for that reason, I gave the book 5 stars. If you're looking for a book that will give you techniques for parenting your strong-willed child - this is probably not the best book for you (for that, I highly recommend "Setting Limits with Your Strong-Willed Child : Eliminating Conflict by Establishing Clear, Firm, and Respectful Boundaries" by Robert J. MacKenzie). Also, it should be noted that some readers may be bothered by the writers' Christian perspective. However, if you want a glimpse inside the mind of a strong-willed child so you can better understand why your child makes the decisions and choices he/she does, then get this book!
Great Book!!  Jun 1, 2009
This was a wonderful, hilarious book! I have to give a copy to all my son's teachers! If you have a strong-willed child (and I don't mean stubborn sometimes) you will so relate!!
