Reviews - What do our customers think?
One of the Greatest Ambassadors of Christian Orthodoxy in the 20th Century  Mar 27, 2010
Full disclosure: I am a fan of John Stott and his expression of Christian orthodoxy. I read my first John Stott book as a junior in college in the early 90's. I found his articulation of the Christian faith to be well thought out and intellectually satisfying. He did not shy away from hard problems or difficult cultural trends while communicating in a manner that was humble yet confident. It was through his teaching that I first encountered intellectually cogent and persuasive reasoning for believing in the physical resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. I agree with Michael Cromartie's sentiment in a 2003 NYTimes editorial "if evangelicals could elect a pope, John Stott is the person they would likely choose."

As someone who has been shaped my Stott's thinking, these video lectures give an unusual insight into what it is like to experience his presence and not just his thought. His properly tailored suit and British accent convey a gravitas that command respect no matter what one thinks of his theological convictions. I especially enjoyed the introduction to All Souls church where he has spent his entire life ministering the gospel. To see the location of the church building near the BBC in London and the interior of the sanctuary, where many of his books found their first expression as sermons, is a real treat.

The content is delivered in a straightforward lecture style, which may seem staid or stodgy to those under 35, but his powerfully understated style of delivery is refreshingly different than the high wattage low quality content that passes for pastoral communication in our day. His erudition and interaction with a broad array of thought leaders is what sets him in direct antithesis to so many of our famous American Christian personalities like the late Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Joel Osteen, or Reverend Al Sharpton.

The quality of the teaching content in these videos is very solid and mirrors exactly what you get in his books. I believe these videos are worth owning even if for no other reason than to remember one of the greatest ambassadors of Christian orthodoxy in the 20th century.

Stott on the Bible and the Christian Life.  Feb 18, 2009
John Stott may be the best lecturer I have ever listened to. In these lectures he is at his best. You will definitely have a better understanding of what Christianity is all about after hearing these lectures.

A foundational lecture series on the Bible by a world-renowned Bible teacher!  May 19, 2008
Author and Pastor Dr.John R. W. Stott is known worldwide as a preacher, evangelist and communicator of Scripture. His books which include some classic bestsellers like Basic Christianity and The Cross of Christ, have sold millions of copies around the world and in dozens of languages. Stott was honored by Time magazine in 2005 as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World".

In this six-session DVD curriculum, Stott addresses key areas of Christian beliefs absolutely central to Christianity in his typical clear, balanced, biblically based, and intellectually rigorous manner. The study sessions include:

1. The Authority of the Bible
2. The Nature of the Bible: Double Authorship
3. The Interpretation of the Bible
4. The Problem of Culture
5. Developing a Christian Mind
6. Making an Impact on Society

The above six penetrating sessions running about 5 hours not only lay a solid foundation for understanding and studying the Word of God but also encourages Christians to develop a Christian mind in order to impact the society they are living in. The sessions shall prove to be one of the most insightful Bible learning resources ever produced on DVDs for the students of the Bible. It also includes outlines and discussion questions for group settings. All in all, this is a must Bible Study Tool.

Essential to proper "study" of the Bible.  Dec 15, 2007
I have used this DVD series in a large Sunday School and found it to be at once very effective and thought provoking.
Stott offers proofs for the authority of the Scriptures and the special authority of the Apostles, through careful inductive study of grammar, outside historical sources, context, cross-reference etc...
You will be offered the needed tools to properly examine any part of the Scriptures yourself, and know that the Truth of them could be tested and found. His prose and pace are quitessentially British and display both his dry wit and aged wisdom. You will be given many, many clear examples of his study tools.
I must admit that he makes one great contradiction or display of inappropriate inductive study of Scriptures when after affirming the proper use of grammar/context, he goes on to posit that "in his opinion" the flood was not a global event but a very geographically localized event. This does not take away from his superbe presentation and I can use it as a perfect example of how not to impose your particular interpretation upon a clear text.
