Item Description...
"The Old Testament book about Job is one of the supreme offerings of the human mind to the living God and one of the best gifts of God to men," writes Francis Andersen. "The task of understanding it is as rewarding as it is strenuous. . . . One is constantly amazed at its audacious theology and at the magnitude of its intellectual achievement. Job is a prodigious book in the vast range of its ideas, in its broad coverage of human experience, in the intensity of its passion, in the immensity of its concept of God, and not least in its superb literary craftsmanship. . . . From one man's agony it reaches out to the mystery of God, beyond words and explanations."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Excellent overview and helpful perspective  Jan 5, 2005
This commentary is not the best for a verse-by-verse analysis of the text (it's not that long) but Anderson provides an excellent overview of the Book of Job that does a good job of appreciating the unmatched nature of this monumental work. The overview also deals concisely with most of the critical controversies that have arisen. The commentary frankly acknowledges a Christian woldview, but still argues from a standard, scholarly perspective. Anderson writes well, but the writing is at a scholarly level and uses quite a few two-dollar words, so I had to make a few runs to the dictionary (not a bad thing, really). For me, this commentary has enhanced my understanding of the Book of Job as a magnificent literary achievement, while also encouraging my faith. I like it a lot.
