Reviews - What do our customers think?
Excellent Overview of Christian Love!  Jul 9, 2007
In the space of around one hundred pages Fathers John F. and Joseph A. Loya, OSA, utilize fifteen of Jesus' best loved parables to describe what it truly means to love, as well as to debunk common myths surrounding love in our contemporary society.
We have come to think of love as a feeling or a thought about another person. But this is not love. This is something that the authors repeatedly stress whenever the reader's subconscious may try to lure him/her back to that notion.
Love is the total giving of ourselves to others. The Fathers Loya write, "Nothing can substitute for having love. Without love we have nothing. Without love we do nothing. Without love we are nothing. No matter what we feel, know, or possess, we have nothing if we do not have love" (P. 72). This is the whole premise on which Christian love is based.
Each of the stories addresses a question the authors pose about love: "How long should I wait for somebody to love me?" How can I experience love?" "Where and when will I find love?", etc. For the reader looking for a quick "how to" book, this is not a series of bullet points with easy answers. Rather, it challenges the reader to look deep within him/herself and see where he/she has failed to live up to the instruction, "You must love your neighbor as yourself."
Love, of course, emanates from God, our Creator. Jesus, His Son, is God's ultimate Gift of Love. This "Master Lover," the title to which Jesus is referred by the authors, is our best example of how unconditional love is possible.
Woven throughout the fifteen love stories, as well as in the introduction, is St. Paul's famous "love letter" to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 13: 4-8). At the end of each of the "love stories" the brothers highlight a verse from this passage, and also use supporting biblical passages on the subject of love.
The book's conclusion is an exchange of vows between lovers entitled, "To Be in Love." While I can picture a bride and groom speaking the lines to one another, I also could hear the Lord Jesus speak these words to the reader, reminding him/her just how much God indeed loves His children!
Although this book could easily be read in one sitting, I would strongly recommend giving each of the "love stories" time to touch the inner recesses of one's being before going on to the next. The reader might just discover things about him/herself that had previously been hidden.
