Jesus: Dead or Alive - Review  Apr 14, 2010
Josh McDowell is one of evangelical Christianity's more prominent "layperson friendly" apologists. In other words, much of his writing and speaking involves the ways we can be confident of our faith and is worded in such a way that the average church attender can understand. Although Lee Strobel is perhaps the most recognizable name in the world of apologetics with his successful "A Case for Christ" series, McDowell is probably most well known for his classic "More Than A Carpenter."

"Jesus: Dead or Alive" is the teen edition of another McDowell book entitled "Evidence for the Resurrection." I had the opportunity to read this book while leading a parent/teen study. Thus, I was able to receive feedback on the book from both students and parents, which was helpful and interesting. The book describes itself as providing "the evidence that has persuaded hundreds of millions of people for a couple thousand years. . ." For the final 45 pages of the book, it does just that in a well-written and structured method that was easy to follow and engaging for both students and parents. Chapter 5 addresses the issue of crucifixion and ultimately seeks to affirm that Christ did, in fact, die on the cross. This is important to McDowell due to the increase in popularity of the "swoon theory" which explains away the resurrection by asserting that Christ did not die on the cross. Chapter 6 then addresses the evidence for the resurrection itself, citing common but helpful issues such as the Roman seal, the eyewitnesses, and the grave clothes. Of course, no book by McDowell would be complete without a brief explanation on why the New Testament can be trusted, citing the manuscript evidence and extra-biblical evidence.

Readers should be aware that McDowell spends three chapter, a total of 68 pages, setting up the scene for the evidence. So, there is more information in this book about the consequence of sin, the loving action of God's providing Jesus, and the mission of Christians in the world than there is on the evidence portion itself. For those who are interested in a "evidence only" book, this might cause some frustration. That notwithstanding, McDowell's purpose is clearly evangelistic and he understands, rightly so, that believing in the historicity of the resurrection apart from it's role in the larger picture of redemption is at the end of the day pointless. So, he wants to use this book as a witnessing tool.

Finally, I found myself somewhat annoyed at how each chapter would flip back and forth between a heavily paraphrased version of the resurrection account and the specific content for each chapter. A few times during our study a student would address questions about the paraphrased narrative and I would have to remind them that this is not Scripture, but a heavily paraphrased version, almost borderline fiction. So, we would make sure to read the account of the resurrection in the Bible when addressing questions that were raised from the book.

Overall, I usually find McDowell to be helpful and worth the time to read. Just be aware of the extra content that you might not be expecting from the book's basic description.
