Petra's return to glory  Mar 13, 2007
Petra - Jekyll And Hyde -

My first memories of pop music fan dome go back to the late 70's when I'd observe my mother washing dishes in the kitchen. She'd always have the windows open and the breeze and sun would shine into the house. She'd work diligently while beautifully singing along to that little transistor radio on the window ledge. It was always set to the local gospel station that would play contemporary Christian rock and traditional gospel standards.

Petra was the first band that got my attention while mom did the chores and they were the first "God rock" band my mother and I "agreed on". I have followed them religiously (no pun intended) since 1983 when they released their breakthrough album Not Of This World. In 1984 Petra's Beat The System Tour was the first full-scale rock show (complete with lights, lazers, and smoke) I'd ever seen - barely beating Motley Crue and Ratt for the battle of my live rock cherry (and possibly my soul).

Formed in 1974. Petra was a "Chistian Rock Band" before the term existed. They paved the way for bands like Chevelle, P.O.D. and Creed while never watering-down their Gospel-based message. The band has gone through many changes including a swap in lead singers in the mid 80's. Their style has changed/evolved over the years and their music has always (well, almost always) remained relevant.

In the secular world of music, the band could be compared to Kiss, Aerosmith, and Metallica. Some would say they're past their peak and have already made their mark. Some would say that like a fine wine or good marriage, they simply get better with age. In my opinion, their last couple of albums sounded like their age was catching up with them. However, Jekyll and Hyde marks Petra's return to great, melodic, heavy rock with a message - It's their best album in years.

By the case you're wondering: PETRA means ROCK.

Good, but not great  Sep 7, 2006
This cd marks a return to rock for Petra. Unfortunately, it's also quite short, and the lyrics are definitely not Bob's strongest. Indeed, the themes are often a subpar rehash of material that Bob has written before in a far more palatable way.

That said, "Jekyll & Hyde" just plain rocks, "Test of Time" is a really fun song, and there are some really fun riffs on this album.

Too bad that the songs all sound too similar, the lyrical content isn't as strong as previous efforts, and the album is too short. Otherwise it would have been a clear winner.
Let Them Rock!  Aug 15, 2006
For all of us who were a little disappointed with Petra's more poppy releases "No Doubt" and "God Fixation," this last studio album finally brought Petra back to what they do best: rock n' roll.

This is definitely the grittiest, hardest-hitting work Petra has done musically, and they do it well. It seemed like before they were always under pressure to include a heavy sampling of adult-contemorary ballads, but not this time. The softest number on "Jekyll" is "Till Everything I Do," and it doesn't fall into that category.

The only weakness here is that some of the songs are lacking originality in the lyrics department. Otherwise, "Jekyll & Hyde" is an awesome revisiting of Petra's heart and soul.
Petra's Heaviest Album  Aug 4, 2006
The fans asked for it, and they finally got it, a fully loaded, Petra-fied rock album. Although this is Petra's last studio album of original music, they went out with a bang. "Jekyll & Hyde" is, without a doubt, the heaviest album ever cranked out by Petra. A number of things set this album apart from the rest of Petra's catalogue. For starters, Louie Weaver is absent from this project. He was released by the group for reasons that are still undisclosed. Secondly, there is the glaring omission of keyboards on this disc (a good move as far as this album is concerned). Lastly, this album was produced by Peter Furler of the Newsboys, and he did a grand job of it.

The first song on the album is the title track, and it kicks things off loud and proud. "All About Who You Know," "Stand" and "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda," keep the Gospel train a'rocking as Bob Hartman shows that he hasn't lost anything in the guitar department and John Schlitt's vocals are still very well intact. The next song, "Perfect World," is my personal favorite. The rest of the album is solid Christian rock, with things slowing down only slightly for "Till Everything I Do" and "Sacred Trust" finish off the album.

Old fans of Petra will notice the musical changes almost immediately, what with a much heavier sound than Petra's ever produced. With Furler at the helm, the group has taken its older and wiser sound to a new level. Gone are the soft and wonderful tunes such as "Don't Let Your Heart Be Hardened" and "Why Should The Father Bother." This album is more akin to old songs like "Sleeping Giant" and "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered," but even they should be considered mild rockers compared to the bulk of this album.

If you've never heard Petra before, or only know them for their softer tunes which get heavier airplay on most Christian stations, this isn't the album that I'd start my collection with. "Wake Up Call" and "This Means War" are two great starting points for any Petra collection. After those albums, I'd go with one of the older, Greg X. Volz fronted albums. After that, "No Doubt" or "God Fixation" will give you a decent feel for the group in later years. Then I think you'll be ready for this tour-de-force from one of Christian music's best groups. This album closes out the band on a high note.
Petra still means rock  Jul 12, 2006
This CD is awesome. By that I mean it fills me with awe. The songs are great, the hooks are catchy, and the messages are great, too.

The only problem is it's too short. Some of the songs could be a bit longer, too.

But I listen to it all the time. And sing along a lot, too...
