Item Description...

Problems! Jack Huber has his share. But when he is introduced to the creative problem solving process from an unexpected source, life soon changes . . . drastically.

Jack Huber dreams of being a professional photographer and starting his own business. He has a few ideas but doesn't know how to process them to make his dream a reality. That is until an unlikely mentor stumbles upon Jack's path and shares a whole new way of thinking through problems.

In Jack's Notebook, Gregg Fraley, an innovation consultant to Fortune 500 companies, illustrates a well-kept secret of corporate America: the Creative Problem Solving process.

"If you are struggling to move ahead in your career, if you're an executive with a thorny corporate challenge, someone trying to solve a messy community issue, a family trying to sort through an emotional conflict, or an entrepreneur looking for ways to make the most of limited resources-this book is for you. If you have a 'mess' on your hands, you have found a useful tool." -from the Introduction

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Jack's Notebook: CPS for everybody  Mar 27, 2007
Some reviewers have commented that in "Jack's Notebook," Fraley deviates from CPS for the sake of the more fast-moving narrative in the last third or so of the book. As someone who's studied CPS, I don't agree. Plus, I asked Fraley about this when I interviewed him for my blog, and he said the specific CPS model that he relies on is a fairly recent one modeled by Gerard Puccio of the International Center for Studies in Creativity at SUNY Buffalo State. "In `Creative Leadership,' Puccio classifies the steps in the CPS process in a slightly different way," said Fraley. "He adds a diagnostic step."

This diagnostic step involves determining exactly which part of the CPS process (Identifying the Challenge, Idea Generation, or Solution Development) you need to be in to handle the specific problem you are dealing with. Fraley's version of the diagnostic step is what he calls in "Jack's Notebook" a "Challenge Triage." As the plot progresses and Jack becomes more fluent in CPS, he shows a corresponding fluidity with the Challenge Triage (which, like all the CPS principles Jack learns to use, is fully explained in the CPS Quick Reference Guide at the end of the book).
21st Century "JACK TALE"  Mar 18, 2007
Jack has climbed beanstalks, sold cows, beaten giants and entertained readers and storylisteners from more than 150 years. Now he has done saved the damsel, solved a business problem and beaten yet another horrible giant (business), while teaching the reader principles about creative thinking and introducing the most famous CREATIVE SOLVING PROCESS, the Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem Solving Process.

"Jack's Notebook" is a fun read, A page turner throughout from when Jack first meets his mentor on a rainy night to when he meets the damsel Molly and finally teams up with many creative people to save two damsels.

I highly recommend Gregg's book for people to learn more about creative thinking and creative problem solving and to people who enjoy reading a "page turner" mystery novel.
Good book for people new to Creative Thinking and Problem Solving  Mar 2, 2007
As most people know, this book uses a fictional story to relate the concepts of creativity and how to use brainstorming, lists, reframing and other methods for creative thinking.

The book has an interesting plot that should keep the reader turning the pages through the book, especially through the first 100 pages. The last half of the book veers slightly off track from the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) process that Fraley is trying to describe, but it is still an interesting read.

The story follows the main character named "Jack" (surprised?) as he realizes that there is something more to life. Jack meets a mentor who explains the concepts of brainstorming and other creative thinking methods and helps Jack understand what it is that he wants to do in life. The major portion of the book follows a few different stories with the major plot finding Jack falling in love and then having to find ways to keep his new-found love alive (literally).

I would recommend the book to anyone new to the creative thinking world since it brings the concepts of brainstorming and Creative Problem Solving to the reader in a manner that is easy to read and understand.

I would tell people that have had some training in creative thinking to pass on the book if they were looking for deeper understanding of concepts. That said, even if you are knowledgeable in this area, you might still enjoy this does provide a good fictional story that has some intelligence built in.
Engaging story that brings to life the creative problem solving process  Feb 8, 2007
I've read business books on problem solving that were boring and woefully lacking in practical examples for the actual applicability to my life. Not so with this book! The characters are engaging, the story line is interesting and the problem solving process is illustrated in a way that gives the reader a true grasp on how to do CPS and get immediate benefits from it.

When I purchased the book, I thought I'd read a few pages to relax me and, like so many other business books, put me to sleep. To my surprise, this book grabbed me and I had to force myself to put it down at 1:30 a.m. I couldn't wait to get back to it the next night...and it continued to draw me into the story and I HAD TO finish it!

I am now on my second reading to practice the process and have started my own "notebook". Things have already started to change in my life based on just beginning the process outlined in this book. If you want things to change in this "business called life", I would highly recommend that you purchase this book and do the process taught within its pages.
Creative demonstration of creative problem solving  Feb 8, 2007
A very successful/creative attempt to demonstrate a theoretical process for thinking creatively in novel form. Using two fictional examples -- the first explores the career wishes of Jack, the second explores solutions to finding Jack's suspiciously missing girl friend -- an approach to solving problems that is not popularly understood is explicated and demonstrated in an intriguing and fun way. Supplemented with a Quick Reference Guide to the process and tips from the author, Gregg Fraley has presented a very approachable guide to creative problem solving that anyone looking for more creative approaches to everyday personal and business challenges should read.
