Great As A Devotional or Small Group Study!  Aug 23, 2009
What an incredible book this is! It has taken me such a long time to go through this because it is so full of meat that I have to read, stop, and digest after sections of this book. I was challenged over and over as I read how to really listen to people, how to be real, how to show compassion and more. The book is great because it not only describes Christ-like-ness, it gives you exercises on what you can do to practice each character of Christ. It is kind of looking in the mirror, like James (of the bible) says, and actually practicing what you have learned. Many books leave you dry in this area. You, too, will not doubt be challenged and grow closer in your walk with the Lord, when you read this book.
You Will Be Challenged  Jun 4, 2009
Everyone is familiar with the question of "What Would Jesus Do?," but few people actually ask, "How would Jesus do?" In Invitation to the Jesus Life, Jan Johnson gives us plenty of food for thought and practical application. Johnson encourages the reader to think about attributes that Jesus had and how we can practice those same disciplines in our own lives. She definitely challenges her audience to step outside their comfort zone.
I enjoyed this book very much. I was pleased that not only did it come with application ideas at the end of each chapter, but there is a group study guide in the back as well as a thorough bibliography. I have lots of other books to look into now. Just don't be mistaken and think this is an easy step by step guide. There is a lot of opportunity for introspection and personal challenge. This is a book I am proud to have on my shelf, although I think it will spend a lot of time in my hands instead.
Practical and Transformational  May 24, 2009
What caught my attention when I first saw this book was that the foreword was written by Dallas Willard, author of The Spirit of the Disciplines. As Willard points out in his remarks, this book takes the question of, "What would Jesus do?" and expands it to, "How would Jesus do what Jesus would do?"

Chapter by chapter Johnson takes several topics that are relevant to us today and she gives us substantial answers on how we can practically live like Jesus. Some of these topics include:
* Being an attentive listener
* Having compassion that flows
* Cheerfully going the extra mile
* Being a hidden servant
* Dying to self

The way that Johnson walks us through these topics shows us that transformation in our lives is possible and when we live a transformed life we will have an effect on those people around us.

At the conclusion of each chapter, Johnson gives us a list of things we can do that she titles, "Experiments In Connecting With God," which even gives more practical advice on how to achieve a life of living like Jesus.

I would recommend this book for a personal/devotional read, but it could also offer up some great discussions in a small group setting. This book is a welcome addition to my library and I expect to reference it many times in the years to come.
Jesus is much more than.....what He did.  May 21, 2009
"God called you to endure suffering because Christ suffered for you. He left you an example so that you could follow in his footsteps." (1 Peter 2:21 GW)

It was the sensation that sparked the little wristbands, the bumper stickers, and even conversations around the water cooler.....WWJD or "What would Jesus do?" It has faded because of two reasons: Everyone already knew the answer and no one could sustain doing what Jesus would do for long. There was no deep, reactionary change from shallow Christianity to a deeper relational understanding and commitment to God through His Son, Jesus Christ that must happen before the question becomes the reaction.

Jan Johnson feels even knowing that mysterious "WWJD" and doing it is prone to the same failure, because outward obedience is corrupted unless inward transformation of the heart towards "the kind of person from whom good deeds naturally flow" happens. In her theological understanding of 'Christlikeness', Johnson endeavors to look beyond the knowledge of "what" Jesus did to "understanding" seventeen 'underrated and particular' characteristics of Christ so that a 'curriculum of Christlikeness' will lead to a sustainable, transformational change within where what Jesus would do is replaced by doing what Jesus would do.

Johnson offers us a perspective of a "Jesus who was more than what He did" and a different look at the examples He left for us to follow.
Wonderfully Practical  May 15, 2009
When I first read the descriptions of this book, I must admit I was skeptical. I thought it sounded like it would be touchy-feely, me-centered, emergent-church babble. I'm so glad I decided to read it anyway! Although it is about personal spiritual growth and, therefore, has an inherent degree of focus on self, it is far from what I would call "me-centered." Johnson paints word pictures for her readers of a number of character qualities Jesus possessed and suggests ways that we can become more godly by focusing on and modeling ourselves after Him.

The descriptions of biblical events are, in some instances, unorthodox. They did not, however, strike me as as the kind of unorthodox that tends toward a perversion of Scripture but, rather, the type of unorthodox that drags us out of our knowledgeable-Christian ruts and causes us to really see these events and absorb their import.

What impressed me most about the book was its practical nature. While each chapter began with a description of how Jesus exemplified the particular trait under consideration, each one ended with a list of very practical exercises for the reader. Not every one will be for every reader. Not all of them are necessarily designed to be permanent practices, either - some of them are more along the lines of experiments. But every single one is an immensely practical way to work toward godly habits. As a reader who often finds myself thinking, "I know, but HOW?" I very much appreciated this. I will definitely be re-reading this one.
