Publishers Description
Recommended by the Nazarene Organic Church NetworkChange is rapidly occurring in almost every area of our society. However, the one notable exception to this is often found in the church, especially in smaller churches. Instead of responding to the changes around them, these churches have adopted a maintenance mentality, which is primarily interested in survival and risk-free ministries that are inwardly focused and fail to meet the needs of those outside their church community. If our churches are going to have an impact on today's culture, we have to move from a maintenance mindset to a missional one.Intentional Ministry in a Not-So-Mega Church is designed to help leaders of smaller churches guide their people in making their primary focus ministering to and meeting the needs of those outside their church. Drawing from more than twenty years of experience as a small-church pastor, Dennis Bickers explores the qualities of transformational leadership and explains what it takes for leaders to create a climate in their churches that promotes and facilitates necessary change. From willingness and vision to risk-taking and commitment, Bickers challenges leaders to become the agents of change their churches need as they seek to answer and act on the question: Who are we here for?

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Helpful, but A Little Dogmatic and Pushy at Times  May 22, 2010
Dennis Bickers has been helping churches grow for almost 30 years. He knows what he's talking about. He discusses the difference between maintenance churches and missional churches. Maintenance churches are focused on keeping the current members happy and keeping things the same so that people won't get upset and leave the church. Missional churches do everything they can to win others to Christ. He says that we have to become missional or we are likely to lose members and die eventually anyway.

My first thought was, "Shouldn't churches be both missional and maintenance? Shouldn't we share Christ with others AND care for our members?"

The author also exhorts churches to keep in step with the times by updating their worship styles, use video technology, get familiar with the culture, and ask God for a vision of what He wants to do in your church.

Basically, this book is recycled Rick Warren/Bill Hybels church growth stuff. The author comes across as "You should do this or your church will be in trouble." I felt a little irritated at particular points in the book.

Part of me wants to ask "Why is getting a bigger church such a big deal? As long as we are ministering for Christ to others wherever we are, what difference does it make? What's wrong with a church of 50 members, or 100 members, or 83 members? The church in Rome only had around 40-50 members at the time Paul wrote Romans to them, according to many NT scholars. It's not about the size of a church, it's about the size of their love for Christ!
