Item Description...
Presents a firsthand account of the kidnapping of two American missionaries by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group in the Philippines, a yearlong ordeal that ended with the death of the author's husband, Martin Burnham.

Publishers Description
2004 ECPA Gold Medallion winner Soon after September 11, the news media stepped up its coverage of Martin and Gracia Burnham, the missionary couple held hostage in the Philippine jungle by terrorists with ties to Osama bin Laden. After a year of captivity and a violent rescue that resulted in Martin's death, the world watched Gracia Burnham return home in June 2002. In this riveting personal account, Burnham tells for the very first time the real story behind the news--about their harrowing ordeal, about how it affected their relationship with each other and with God, about the terrorists who held them, about the actions of the U.S. and Philippine governments, and about how they were affected by the prayers of thousands of Christians throughout the world.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
More Al Quieda activities  Mar 6, 2007
This book is about the kidnapping of Christian Missionaries Martin and Gracia Burham in the summer of 2001. The Phillipino Abu Sayyaf branch of Al Quieda was responsible. Taken with a group of rich tourists from various foreign countries, their abduction was originally done for quick randsoms. But, the American government refuses to participate in this so they were in captivity for over a year! Other tourists were either killed or their ransoms were paid. No other source I've read mentions this as one of the financial operations of Al Quieda.

I loved this book because it really makes you think about what is important in life.

Excellent Life Lessons  Oct 24, 2006
I liked this book. True stories are great and this one was recent. Being christian, I could relate to the spiritual struggles this couple went through. It has some valuable advice about how to handle trials. The author is spunky and bold and reminded me of my own mother and how she might feel and behave in a similar situation. This book also defines the importance of a good marrital relationship and how it can get you through tough times. It was interesting to see how they helped one another to refocus on christian values when it would be easy for both to be filled with anger toward God and their captors. The author is surprisingly non-judgemental and as she learnes how the Abu Sayyaf think according to their beliefs, she mearly makes note of it. There were several times near the end of the book when I wished I had a highlighter to highlight some of her reflections on the experience.
the best  Jul 10, 2006
a book every one should read, It touches the heart. And what a wonderful woman.Gracia is truly a Godly woman.
Real life but reads like a novel  May 29, 2006
This book reads like a novel. Even though I always knew how the story would end I kept hoping they would be resuced or escape. Gracia is very honest in this book. Some Christians might even think she should have trusted God more. But I see this book as a good lesson in real life through the eyes of a lady who is a genuaine Christian. The book will inspire you and teach you about evil and good. This book should encourage Christians and it will challenge those who are not Christians to seriously consider Christianity - not because of an arguemnt but because of a life well lived for her (and his) faith.
Emotional rollercoaster ride through the jungle of the Philippines  May 27, 2006
This book allows you to relate and sympathize with two missionaries kidnapped while celebrating their anniversary at a small beach resort.

This true story took place a few months before the attacks of September 11th by a terrorist party that had associations with the attackers of the World Trade Center . Most news stories don't provoke emotion, but this book allows you to clearly imagine the hardships Martin and Gracia Burnham faced in the jungle of the Philippines. The news reports associated with this kidnapping gave you the bare minimal details and didn't allow you to get on the inside of the story. The book fills in the blanks and allows you to feel the emotion that Gracia and Martin felt while they constantly missed their children, family, and home. This book takes you on a journey of the Burnham's life together and put you on an emotional rollercoaster.

This book was a page turner and a quick read, but very repetitive. You constantly visit the same setting and similar attacks that resulted in the same outcome. I found myself interested in the story, because it was so true, but the obvious was stated to often, such as they didn't have enough food or proper places to bath. While the repetitiveness is a downfall in the book, it doesn't put a damper on the entire story.

Being Christian, this book allows you to learn more about your faith and see how devoted some worshippers are. You form a great respect for these two people by sticking to what they believe in, which encourages you to strengthen your own faith.

In the Presence of My Enemies, is a love story that shows the support two people can have on each other while struggling under a terrorist ruling. Overall, this is a good book that will help you remember a landmark in history.
