In Book 1 of Stephen Lawhead's Dragon King Trilogy, Quentin the acolyte embarks on a dangerous quest to destroy the power of the "old gods" and discover the One who reveals himself to every earnest seeker.

A dying knight's urgent plea propels a disenchanted young acolyte into a deadly mission. On the shoulders of the unsuspecting Quentin rests the course of a kingdom; and ahead of him, a quest that will lead him out of the darkness of the old gods . . . and into undreamed-of spheres of conflict, magic, and light.

Annotation: A young man sets off on a quest to rescue his king in this, the first volume of the Dragon King Trilogy.

Author Bio
Unlike many science fiction and fantasy authors, Stephen R. Lawhead studied Fine Art while attending college (Kearny State in Nebraska). While there he wrote both poetry and a column in the college paper, though it wasn't until several years later that he turned to fiction. In the meantime, he played guitar in a rock group, studied at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, and started and managed a record company. His first novel, IN THE HALL OF THE DRAGON KING, appeared in 1982. The first volume of Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle, an Arthurian fantasy series, was published in 1987, and was derived from research Lawhead had done in England, a country to which he and his family eventually immigrated in 1990. The Pendragon books are arguably Lawhead's most popular--the second of which, ARTHUR, even received a nomination for the Locus Award, an award voted on by the readers of science fiction and fantasy. Lawhead has also written non-fiction guides to life in college, several in collaboration with his wife, Alice.

More About Stephen R. Lawhead

Stephen R. Lawhead Stephen Lawhead is an internationally acclaimed author of mythic history and imaginative fiction. He was born in 1950, in Nebraska in the USA. His early life was lived in America where he earned a university degree in Fine Arts and attended theological seminary for two years.

In 1986 the Lawhead family moved to Britain so that Stephen could conduct research for the PENDRAGON CYCLE books. They settled there permanently in 1990, with some years spent living in Austria and a sabbatical in the United States.

In addition to his twenty-four novels, he has written nine children's books, many of them originally offered to his two sons, Drake and Ross. He is married to Alice Slaikeu Lawhead, with whom he has collaborated on books and articles. They make their home in Oxford, England.

Dragon King Trilogy  Oct 12, 2009
Orderd as gift. Good story line for young fantasy readers. Book arrived in excellent condition. Very pleased
Awesome!!!!!  Oct 11, 2007
In the Hall of the Dragon King is a GREAT begining to a series. You, as a reader, instantly like the main characters and are thrown headlong into their quest for truth and the salvation of their kindgom. Lawhead shows that even in the first series he published, he already had that...that...I don't even know if words can describe it. Lawhead is one of my favorite authors and this book lives up to any and all expectations I had. It is worth any price this site can set.
For Young Adults  Sep 16, 2007
I think you need to remember that this book's aimed for the young adult audience. If you've read Song of Albion, or Byzantium, or Hood and Scarlet, then you read this, you will notice the difference, and I think that's why some people are giving it only a few stars.

However, there's virtually no series I'd recommend more for young adults, especially who are into Fantasy.
Uninspiring Christian Fantasy  Jun 12, 2006
As an avid fantasy lover and non-Christian, I found this book very disappointing. The plot is unoriginal, the characters uninspiring, and I felt cheated by the none-too-subtle religious propoganda -- I realized only after reading the book that the publishing company is all Christian literature. If you're looking for Christian fantasy -- hey, it's a limited genre, and this book isn't all bad. But if you're just looking for good fantasy -- look elsewhere.
