Item Description...
Meticulously documented, this resource will give new insight to readers of all backgrounds. Its three parts present an overview of the evidence for creation; the hydroplate theory; and frequently asked questions (including scientific information showing that the theory of a young earth is not contradicted by time concerns for the travel of light from distant galaxies). From the back cover: This understandable, comprehensive, and meticulously documented resource will give new insight to readers of all backgrounds. IN THE BEGINNING: COMPELLING EVIDENCE FOR CREATION AND THE FLOOD takes a different look at a currently hot topic. Evidence that could revolutionize our understanding of origins is carefully explained. You will be challenged to consider fresh ideas in the age-old debate. Part I of IN THE BEGINNING discusses, in quick overview, 137 categories of evidence from biology, astronomy, and the physical and earth sciences. More technical discussions and documentation are found in the author's extensive endnotes. Part II introduces and describes the hydroplate theory--a new theory developed after more than 30 years of study by Dr. Walt Brown, a former evolutionist. This theory explains a catastrophic event in earth's history and answers a host of previously unexplained questions raised by physical observations. For decades, evolutionists complained that creationists only criticized evolution and did not have sound scientific theories of their own. The hydroplate theory ends that complaint and explains, with overwhelming evidence, earth's defining geological event--a worldwide flood. Twenty-eight frequently asked questions from those attending seminars by Dr. Brown fill a fascinating Part III. Walt Brown received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow. He has taught college courses in physics, mathematics, and computer science. Brown is a retired full colonel (Air Force), West Point graduate, and former Army ranger and paratrooper. Assignments during his 21 years in the military included: Director of Benet Research, Development, and Engineering Laboratories in Albany, New York; tenured associate professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy; and Chief of Science and Technology Studies st the Air War College. For most of his life Walt Brown was an evolutionist, but after many years of study, he became convinced of the scientific validity of creation and a global flood. S

Reviews - What do our customers think?
ahhhh, ummmm, ehhhhh  Jul 22, 2008
This book was not great and certain proof of a young earth like it claims. However, it was not complete [...] either. Much of what Dr. Brown writes is good or plausible. For instance, the section about mammoths. I'm going to look into it much more, but from what I gather, he seems right about them. However, this does not mean that the earth is less than 10,000 years old. Then there were a lot of things just thrown to the book that is either bad science or been disproved.

If you read this book, do not discard everything that is said because some of it is bad science. Also, do not accept all of it because parts of it are good. Dr. Brown looks at assumptions made by scientists and assumes they are wrong, at the same time, assuming his assumptions are right. This book is an interesting read, but not conclusive. No one has it all figured out yet and this book is just another potential piece of the puzzle.

For Christians, this book goes a step further than saying evolution did not happen because there are holes in the theory. It has its own theory and supports it with evidence. For evolutionists, this book is not just the work of an extremist, screaming in the face of evidence. There is actually some science behind what is written. If you are interested in evolution or creation, this book is one of many you should read to try to get to the bottom of it all.
The best work on Creation Science!  Jul 11, 2008
This is THE book to read if you're interested in solid science that refutes evolution! Dr. Brown's work is amazingly detailed, and if it's bibliographical notes you want, they're here! Scientific facts are duly cited to seemingly back-up "every jot and tittle" of this amazing volume! I'm sure that if the court in Dover, Penn. had read this, they wouldn't have tossed this perfectly viable theory out of the schools (I'm a firm believer that Creationism should be taught along with Evolutionism-- evolutionists and skeptics should stop with the "Chicken Little" syndrome and being so scared of the idea that students ought to have a chance to examine both theories!)

Also, the book is very beautifully made-- the photographs are crystal-clear and the graphs are very well done; the binding is excellent.

I'm delighted with this and it really gives the backhand to phony evolutionism! If you don't see that the Earth was created rather than simply came together by accident after reading this excellent tome of scientific evidence, then you just won't be convinced!
Pseudoscientific Pap  Jun 27, 2008
This review is based on the online edition of the Seventh Edition of "In the Beginning" which is more recent than my print copy. It is one very long series of errors and misrepresentations. Brown, like many "creation scientists," cites and quotes many actual scientists lending an apparent connection between his work and reality. If a reader does not have the educational background, or time to personally read these citations, they might be fooled into thinking there is some support for Brown's wild ideas.

I'll take two examples as typical of Brown's disconnect from reality. In his "Frequently Asked Questions" section titled "68. Old DNA, Bacteria, and Proteins?" Brown cites Giuseppe Geraci et al., "Microbes in Rocks and Meteorites," (Rendiconti Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Vol. 12, No. 9, 2001, p. 51) for support of the notion that "fountains of the deep" (see Genesis 7:11) blew massive amounts of the earth into outer space. This article was published with a long list of objections and cautions that its conclusions were provisional, and that there were many doubts regarding methods used by the principal investigators. Brown ignores these cautions, nor does he note that over forty years of meteorite investigations have always found terrestrial contamination to be the source of microorganisms found in meteorites, e.g. "Bacterial Contamination of Some Carbonaceous Meteorites" J. ORO T. TORNABENE (1965 SCIENCE, VOL. 150, pg. 1047-1048). The probability of contamination increases in direct proportion to the amount of handeling the samples are subjected to under unsterile conditions. The two meteorite samples examined by Giuseppe Geraci had been recovered, handled and publicly displayed for many decades, one for over a century. Brown builds everything on this one error having ignored decades of related research.

In the same section, Brown claims that the discovery of "proteins, soft tissue, and blood compounds preserved in dinosaur bones" preclude an ancient earth. I have dealt with these topics at considerable length elsewhere, and the links to these articles are in the first comment below. In short, Brown's argument fails on this as well.

In a section on transitional fossils, Brown serves up massive numbers of out-of-context and manipulated "quotes." These are known as quotemines and most of those used by Brown are exposed in the "Quote Mine Project" maintained by the TalkOrigins Archive, which is dedicated to exposing the sort of creationist chicanery as Browns book.

Brown makes the statement, "If evolution happened, many other giant leaps must also have occurred: the first photosynthesis, cold-blooded to warm-blooded animals, floating marine plants to vascular plants, placental mammals to marsupials, egg-laying animals to animals that bear live young, insect metamorphosis, the transition of mammals to the sea (whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, and manatees), the transition of reptiles to the sea (plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs), and on and on."

Lets just look at a few gross errors in that paragraph. First is the most obvious error regarding the supposed transition of "placental mammals to marsupials." Sorry Walt, it didn't happen that way. If you reverse it from marsupials to placental mammals you will be still wrong. The evolution of cyanobacteria and the evolutionary innovation of endosymbiosis lead directly to the evolution of photosynthesis, and while not complete, these must first be refuted scientifically before Brown can claim they cannot be completed. Then there is the question of sea mammals. Brown lumps three major groups, the Cetaceans (whales and allies), the Pinipeds (seals, walrus, sea lions) and the Sirenians (manatee, sea cow and dugong). Demanding a common group of fossils for these would be asinine. The transitional fossils for the cetaceans are the best known and the most accessible general reader source is from the laboratory of Dr. J. G. M. Thewissen, also an excellent source on the evolution of Sirenians. The known transitional fossils fall into six families, Indocetidae, Pakicetidae, Ambulocetidae, Remingtonocetidae, Protocetidae, Dorudontidae, and Basilosauridae. The transitional fossils of the Sirenians are less well studied with only about fifty specimens. None the less, the broad outline connecting the elephants, hippos, and manatees is known. The early transitional fossils for the pinipeds are the least well known, but one in which I have personal experience. The best fossil specimen in the world (over 90% complete) of the most likely ancestor of the pinipeds, Gomphotaria pugnax, was discovered by one of my former students and is curated by a museum where I was a director. Gomphoria shows the fossil connection between the pinipeds and ancient ancestors of bears.

These basic errors show why engineers should not write about biology or paleontology- they are ignorant. It is for these reasons that I wish there were "negative" points I could award to Brown's pernicious book.
The key creation resource  Jun 24, 2008
This is without doubt the most exhaustive work on creation apologetics one could hope to have, particularly strong in explaining the likely geologic mechanism which precipitated the great flood. I have used this in teaching high school science and it was greatly appreciated by the students. IN THE BEGINNING was my key resource in researching the preflood adventure novel,The Ninth Generation: Conquering the Giants. Thank you, Walt Brown, and the Center for Scientific Creation.
Best In Class  Jun 4, 2008
In the Beginning is the best single-volume scientific study on the subject of origins. Author Walt Brown is a highly-qualified scientist. Like creation scientists Henry Morris, Duane Gish, and A.E. Wilder-Smith, his technical credentials are outstanding (he has a PhD in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Walt Brown has not written many books, he has written one book. In fact, In the Beginning is the only book that Walt ever intends to write. Because scientific books need frequent updating, and because it behooves all of us to have a comprehensive work in the field, Walt Brown continuously updates his encyclopedic In the Beginning. Each edition surpasses its antecedent in timeliness (e.g., there have been three high-profile frozen mammoths found since the first edition was published), thoroughness of content, and ease of use (the book includes a complete index along with a very helpful table of contents).

Since In the Beginning is comprehensive, it is not intended to be read from cover to cover (although that is the way I read it, and it reads well that way). It is broken into three major sections, with each section comprising dozens of sub-chapters, each of which can stand alone. The three sections are:

Part 1: The Scientific Case for Creation
This first section, which is 41 pages long, is a primer on the scientific case for creation. Dr. Brown debunks dozens of myths, demonstrating from a strictly scientific standpoint that evolution could not have happened. He deals with 137 examples in the areas of the life sciences, the earth sciences, and the astronomical/physical sciences with explanations that are complete but brief (with more thorough documentation in the reference section at the end of Part 1).

Full disclosure: you will end up reading the references and notes at the same time you read the text because they are both helpful and fascinating. This makes the reading assignment for section 1 a total of 85 pages. Because the footnotes force the reader to constantly flip back and forth between the main text and the reference section, I found it helpful to use two bookmarks in Part 1.

Part 2: Fountains of the Great Deep
While Dr. Browns book is similar to other excellent creation science books in the opening section, he posits an entirely new scientific theory of origins in Part 2, the Hydroplate Theory. Dr. Browns observations of the earths features troubled him: he knew that traditional theories were woefully inadequate to explain much of what we observe, e.g., Pacific Ocean trenches, plateaus, canyons, submarine canyons, sedimentary rock, and limestone. He was also aware that God had destroyed the earth with a cataclysm. The discovery and details of one of earths most dramatic features, the Mid-Oceanic ridge, helped him formulate his theory. Dr. Brown explains the Hydroplate Theory with the necessary facts, avoiding a superfluity of technobabble. The Hydroplate Theory undoubtedly has some erroneous minutiae (as all such scientific theories will), but In the Beginning shows that the Plate Tectonic theory (conventional wisdom in both secular and Christian circles) is foundationally flawed while the Hydroplate Theory provides a plausible contrary scenario.

Among the many otherwise-inexplicable mysteries Dr. Brown explains are:
The Earths limestone holds more calcium and carbon than the atmosphere, oceans, coal, oil, and living matter combined. Where did this come from?
Oxen were found frozen in the act of swimming in Tibet. Since water becomes less dense as it approaches the freezing point, rivers dont freeze solid: just the top freezes. What could cause a river to freeze solid virtually instantaneously?
Asteroids, meteoroids, and comets contradict virtually all scientific theories of heavenly bodies (both secular and Christian). Dr. Brown provides plausible explanations for all with his Hydroplate theory.

Dr. Brown incorporates many predictions in his book. He does this specifically where conventional wisdom would generate a contrary opinion (or no opinion). Some (such as the potential for life to be found both on Mars and in comets) have the potential to be very valuable when otherwise puzzling evidence is presented to Christians: Dr. Brown can not only explain it, he predicted it!

Part 3: Frequently Asked Questions/Technical Notes

Dr. Brown has been a full-time creation scientist for over 25 years. He has compiled some of the most commonly asked (and compelling) questions in this third section.

For example, many people believe that Archaeopteryx is legitimate transitional form between reptiles and birds. Dr. Brown demonstrates that Archaeopteryx doesnt fit in the proposed evolutionary chronology (according to the evolutionists own dating of the fossils). He also demonstrates that Archaeopteryx is likely a hoax: there are only six Archaeopteryx fossils that have ever been unearthed; all six are from the same area; all six are over 140 years old; all six are lacking a sternum (required for flight); and all six look, for all the world, like a doctored-up Compsognathus. Only two of the six have any indication of feathers, and both show evidence of tampering and dissimilar soils around the feathers and the body.

Anyone who can break free of the Darwinist brainwashing we receive from a young age will find this to be an outstanding book.
