Item Description...
Inspired by the heartwarming paintings and illustrations of Norman Rockwell, a photojournalist travels the country to capture everyday people in ordinary situations, revealing scenes of sports, family, faith, and patriotism in a volume that pairs the author's spontaneous photographs with Norman Rockwell's paintings. 60,000 first printing.

Publishers Description
In this unprecedented collection, photojournalist Kevin Rivoli proves that the idealistic, all-American views found in Norman Rockwell's classic illustrations are, in fact, accurate and timeless portrayals of a nation that truly does exist.

Some critics argue that Norman Rockwell's images are overly sentimental, old-fashioned, and contrived. Yet it was always photojournalist Kevin Rivoli's belief that the themes that make Rockwell's illustrations so poignant -- patriotism, faith, family, and sports -- are also what make our country so great. Determined to dispel the critics' claims against Rockwell's prolific body of work, Rivoli set out with his camera to visit small towns and capture spontaneous Rockwell moments that celebrate the glory of ordinary, everyday life.

"In Search of Norman Rockwell's America" pairs Rivoli's photographs side by side with Norman Rockwell's iconic paintings, demonstrating how Rockwell's scenes were not just imagined on a canvas since they continue to sensitively reflect the American experience today. Each page of In Search of Norman Rockwell's America is filled with inspiring quotes and anecdotes from those who have been touched by Rockwell, including Arnold Palmer, Dick Clark, Beau Bridges, Dolly Parton, former president Jimmy Carter, and even the original subjects of Rockwell's artwork. A must-have for photographers, artists, Rockwell enthusiasts, and those desiring to slow down and focus on what's really important in life -- embracing those special Rockwell moments.

In Search of Norman Rockwell's America
Review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

Review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

Rivoli is a photojournalist "who has photographed everyone from professional sports stars to presidents. But his favorite subjects have always been ordinary people doing ordinary things" (from the back page of the book jacket). Ordinary people are the focus for his camera in this volume, and how he matches images with Rockwell's art is intriguing and ingenious. Rockwell's artwork is iconic, and Rivoli's photography is not just outstanding, it is stunning. He successfully captures the spirit of Rockwell's America. Jimmy Moore ended his very positive review of the book saying: "Norman Rockwell's paintings are like Elvis Presley's music. The older it gets, the more you appreciate the magnitude of the brilliance that makes it timeless. THANK YOU Kevin Rivoli for reminding us that the American spirit that Normal Rockwell portrayed so clearly is alive and well today!" And I would just like to add a second "thank you" to the one by Moore. This volume makes a perfect "coffee-table book," and if you decide to buy it as a gift for someone or just for yourself, I will bet that anyone -- and I mean anyone -- who happens to see it, will want to turn its pages. It is truly a treasure that will be enjoyed for years and years.
BEAUTIFUL  Oct 15, 2009
My husband and I LOVED this book. Being big fans of Norman Rockwell, we were really curious to see if Mr. Rivoli could truly link the past and present. He did this and more. This book is a tribute to Norman Rockwell and the simplicity of another time. It makes you, the reader, realize that these truly wonderful moments still exist in present day if you just take a moment to notice them. I have purchased additional copies to give as Christmas presents.
Hmmmm....  May 21, 2009
Very interesting, but as I type I still am not quite sure what I think. But I'm writing the review because I'm not sure I ever will. This is an effort to link Rockwell's timeless work as...well...timeless. The idea of linking some of Rockwell's best work with complimentary photographs from today might seem to be interesting and it is. Kind of. It's hard for a Norman Rockwell fan to warm up to this. Some of the photographs are truly very, very good. Some of them just so-so and contrived to go along with the accompanying Rockwell work. It's a creative idea, was a creative project, and quite honestly I often found myself enjoying the "bridging of time" and other times - it left me flat and toyed with. But I give this book credit for excellent selection and for some truly excellent mirroring that left me feeling good. At times. This book is a bit difficult to review. Many books have good and bad - this one in just a different way.
Kevin Rivoli Shows The Spirit Of Normal Rockwell IS Alive And Well  Jan 9, 2009
Some say the days of a Norman Rockwell painting are long gone. We've just changed too much as a country for the Americana of a Rockwell piece to still be relevant in the 21st Century. Well, if that's how YOU feel, then you should pick up a copy of this amazing book featuring photographs from Kevin Rivoli. He went out into the streets of America to recapture the images that Norman Rockwell so brilliantly painted in the early 20th Century and what he found is that the more things change the more they stay the same.

People always want to hearken back to the good ole days portrayed in Rockwell's paintings, but they conveniently forget he lived through some of the hardest times in our nation's history--the Great Depression and two World Wars. And as bad as some think the United States has gotten today, it's really not as severe and desperate as we think. Rivoli shows this truth quite vividly in his eerily similar pictures of famous Rockwell paintings.

I especially enjoyed the quotes from famous people commenting on the impact Norman Rockwell's paintings had on them. People like Brian Williams from NBC News, singer Dolly Parton, astronaut "Buzz" Aldrin, and entertainer Ed McMahon, among others. It's a walk down memory lane for those who remember these paintings so well and a perfect introduction to a new generation of Americans who need to know the good ole days will always be with us no matter what we're going through.

Norman Rockwell's paintings are like Elvis Presley's music. The older it gets, the more you appreciate the magnitude of the brilliance that makes it timeless. THANK YOU Kevin Rivoli for reminding us that the American spirit that Normal Rockwell portrayed so clearly is alive and well today!
Didn't move me!  Jan 9, 2009
I love Norman Rockwell but not this book. There is only one and will only be one Norman Rockwell, and to compare want to be photographs to Norman's art is like comparing "Shake and Bake" to one of Julia Child's fabulous Roasted Lemon Chicken with Herbs. Just did not happen for me. I am a photographer by hobby and have studied as well as dabbled in my own dark room. These "comparison" pictures, if you will, fall way too short in my book. I feel no "emotion" when I view them. I would much prefer a coffee table book with JUST Norman's pictures UNCLUTTERED by these mediocre photos. Doesn't make sense to me.
