Item Description...
The Lordship Salvation controversy continues to provoke debate across a broad spectrum of evangelical Christianity. For much of the last decade advocates of Lordship Salvation have dominated the forum. Few resources have been available to those who are alarmed over the spread of the Lordship interpretation of the gospel. A defense of the gospel has been sorely needed. This book is that defense! Lou Martuneac has dealt extensively with this subject since 1988. In this volume he answers many questions that comprise the debate from a balanced biblical perspective. Key Bible passages and major doctrines such as faith, repentance, and belief are studied in depth. Related issues such as Calvinism, carnality, discipleship, and contending for the faith are given serious consideration. This book is well researched, well organized, well documented, and clearly presented. This volume will be a valuable study and reference tool for the pastor, layman, or college classroom.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Outstanding work, that goes beyond the sniping we often read.  Jul 1, 2008
Today it's more common to find one man insult another instead of critically examine his position, his argument, and the implications of both. It is altogether rare to find someone who is willing to answer all of the above with simple scripture and very little commentary.

Rev. Lou Martuneac in In Defense Of The Gospel compares Scripture with Scripture in accordance with 1 Cor 2:12-13 And so, with surgical precision the argument for Lordship Salvation is dissected and destroyed by the Sword not by man's reasonings.

I'm thankful and blessed to be able to report how Rev. Martuneac goes well out of his way to ensure he does not put words in the mouths of those he is quoting. There can be no claim of a "Strawman Argument" here. The words of Lordship Salvation proponents are offered in full and in context. Often the history of a thought from one of these men is tracked through the history of his ministry and writings to ensure clarity and honesty is maintained.

Further, the Reverend does not rely on scare tactics or great "what if's" to persuade his readers to see the dangers of preaching Lordship Salvation. The layman of God's Word, and the honest reader of In Defense Of The Gospel will come to the realization of how much danger is involved without the aid of political tactics.

Some of the greatest strengths of this book lay in the appendixes where the reader is fed by the likes of Pastor George Zeller, and Dr. Stewart Custor. Pastor Zeller's work entitled "Does Regeneration Precede Faith" really ought to be a must-read for anyone who handle's the Gospel of Christ.

Rev. Martuneac spends a great deal of effort on explaining why we are Biblically not given the option of "letting it all just be." This section is something that Elders of the Church should know inside out. Protecting the purity of our faith, and the preaching thereof is of paramount importance. The Reverend helps the youngest of Christians see why, and how.

The one weak portion of the book is the Appendix entitled "What About Calvinism?" The Reverend is less persuasive and less complete in his arguments here. I'm sure the reason is that the book is not about Calvinism, but that the topic needed to be touched on in order to complete the argument of the entire book.

Over all, this book has been read, a great deal of it twice, and has traveled with me on one Evangelism mission trip. It is a valuable tool for me in my ministry and has already born fruit in my preaching.

Notes on the quality of the book are these. The paperback glued binding is very strong. The book has put up with being bent in half on almost every page, repeatedly. The print is very sharp and easy to read. There is a slight shine to the ink.

God Bless You!
A very poor critique of Lordship Salvation  Jun 14, 2008
There were such high expectations for this book. But after reading it, there was a great let-down.

1) The book is supposed to be a refutation of Lordship Salvation. Yet Lou concedes the largest battlefront in the debate to those in Lordship Salvation! Lou's view of repentance is essentially the same view espoused by Lordship Salvation. There is not a single leader in the Free Grace movement that shares with Lou his particular stance on repentance, not one! As a matter of fact, the editor of John MacArthur's web-magazine, Nathan Busenitz, states the very same thing: Lou Martuneac's doctrine of repentance is Lordship Salvation!

2) The author relies heavily on other commentators and has done little of his own research.

3) There is a complete lack of any exegesis in the pertinent scriptural passages.

There are several very good books on this site that are recommended in the stead of this book, which promises much, but does not deliver.

Recommended books answering and refuting Lordship Salvation:

Zane Hodges:
Absolutely Free!
The Gospel Under Seige
Grace in Eclipse
The Hungry Inherit
The Epistle of James: Proven Character through Testing
The Epistles of John: Walking in the Light of God's Love

Robert Wilkin:
Confident in Christ: Living By Faith Really Works!
Secure and Sure: Grasping the Promises of God

Joseph Dillow:
The Reign of the Servant Kings

Do not waste your money on Lou Martuneac's book when there are real expositers of the pertinent scriptures available in these recommended resources!
This book chanaged my life  Apr 20, 2008
I had been struggling for years wondering if I was saved or not. Every time I would sin I would think, "If I were really a Christian why would I do that?" Then I would try to stop sinning to "prove" my salvation. I never had assurance because I was reared in a Lordship Salvation environment.

I still sin, yet now I know that I know that I know that I know that I know I have eternal life and that salvation is a FREE GIFT. Lou drills this into the reader's mind in each chapter by quoting Eph 2:8-9.

The book itself is VERY well written. Lou doesn't delve into large theological definitions to explain and refute Lordship Salvation. He uses the common man's language to convey Biblical truth.

I thank God for men like Lou. Bless you, sir.

An Excellent Refutation of "Lordship Salvation" Theology  Jan 13, 2008
Rev. Lou Martuneac's "In Defense of the Gospel" is a comprehensive book on the doctrine of "Lordship Salvation". He liberally quotes the Lordship teachers so as to fully expose them to the light and leave no doubt as to what they are teaching. Then, from Scripture, he soundly refutes their works-salvation theology, and presents the clear truth of the Biblical Gospel. Namely, that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ and not by works. He shows how Lordship doctrine did not originate with John F. MacArthur, Jr., but has it's roots in Calvinism. Rev. Martuneac also uses Scripture to soundly refute Calvinism. This book is a must read if you have loved ones who have become ensnared by the heretical doctrine of "Lordship Salvation".

I received my copy of "In Defense of the Gospel" last Saturday, and spent the weekend reading it. It is an easy read, written in a conversational style that will keep you turning the pages late into the night.

It definitely deserves its place on your bookshelf.
