Funny with faith  Feb 13, 2009
Reviewed by Danelle Drake for Reader Views (2/09)

Some people say I am crazy (I'm not), but "I'm Not CRAZY, but I might be a carrier" is so very funny. The cover says the book contains "Infectious inspiration from comedian Charles Marshall" and that is exactly what we get. I have read several books written by comedians and have not been disappointed yet. The material covered in the books is an extension of what they are able to cover on stage and in much greater depth. The difference in Charles Marshall and the others is that he is just as funny, or even funnier, yet his work is so very inspirational. Faith for today's world is what we receive. I really feel that a little laughter makes the day much brighter.

As you turn each page you realize God's love is working on you through the word of Charles. His inviting presence makes you comfortable and acceptable to his gift. His straight to the point tales will have you realizing how each of God's creatures is more alike that we sometimes wish: "There is a place in my home that strikes terror in the hearts of all its inhabitants (all those over three feet tall that is). It is a place that we try not to think about and that we avoid at all costs. The very mention of its name makes my wife and me shudder in revulsion and fear. It's called the Black Hole. The Black Hole is the default repository of all those sundry pieces of paper that we know we should probably keep but are too lazy to find. In our house, it's the bottom dresser drawer." In ours, it's a Longaberger basket sitting beside our dresser. Go figure - everyone has one. Charles says, "The thing is, God sees everything inside us, and still loves us, in spite of all the mess."

"I'm Not CRAZY" by Charles Marshall is really worth reading - very light, funny, and will put a smile on your face. For every situation man goes through, a solution can be found through God. The chapters are short so you would be able to leave your book in the car and read when you pick up the children at school, while on your lunch break, or (around here) even at some red-lights.

Clean Christian comedy sprinked with inspirational insights  Aug 24, 2008
I have finally found a suggestion to share with friends who need gift ideas for the men in their lives. When socks, ties, aftershave, golfing gear and watches are exhausted as possibilities (they've all been given far too many times), what is there left to give? I'm Not Crazy, But I Might Be A Carrier is going to be my new suggestion to women everywhere trying to find an appropriate gift.

Charles Marshall is an experienced Christian comedian offering up his witty, clean brand of humour in person across the country as a stand-up comedian for hire. He specializes in corporate events, church functions and conferences - any event that requires family friendly entertainment. His work is now available in print with I'm Not Crazy representing his first humour title. Marshall will appeal to a wide array of individuals, not only men - I found him quite entertaining myself.

I'm Not Crazy is a slender volume with 146 pages divided into 40 short vignettes, each between two to four pages in length. The book lends itself well to bathroom reading; you only have a few minutes, open the book randomly to any section, dig in and have a chuckle within a minute or two. Of course, the bathroom shelf isn't the only place to set this title - the coffee table, nightstand, handbag, and vehicle also lend themselves well to the short segments Marshall has presented.

Drawing upon everyday life experiences Marshall covers a broad range of topics: food, marriage, children, teeth, dogs, alien abduction - like I said, the common stuff of life. Using a keen eye for the humorous in any material, he tickles our funny bones effortlessly. It is hard to get a good laugh out of me - comedy films and most humour titles stir a grin or two, but rarely do they elicit laughter. Marshall had me laughing out loud with tears running down my face - he's that good.

Tied into Marshall's witty sketches we find insights, reflections and advice that well from his own walk in faith with God. While the transitions aren't always smooth - it's difficult to go from laughing about imaginary alien abduction scenarios to the Gospel - his insights are full of warmth. In nearly every sketch the reader can draw an imaginary line between the humourous and the inspirational. These brief discussions of God's goodness aren't extensive enough to render this title worthy of reading as a devotional, but are good reminders. Christian readers will nod and smile as they recall God's deep love for His creation, and most notably His children.

Marshall's writing is clear, crisp and free of extraneous verbiage. He communicates his message succinctly, a talent likely developed from his years of delivering tight comedic performances. For a man who works with the spoken word, he is surprisingly at home in the written medium as well, having authored his first non-fiction title, Shattering The Glass Slipper, in 2003.

It can be a real relief to just kick back, relax, and have a good laugh. Thankfully Charles Marshall can help us achieve that goal in short order. Everyone will be able to find something they can relate to in I'm Not Crazy, and Marshall will have them laughing about it. Let's hope he finds new material and writes another book.
Hysterical!  Aug 20, 2008
The title of this book grabbed my attention immediately. "I'm Not Crazy, But I Might Be A Carrier" is a wonderful non-fiction work by Charles Marshall. Each laugh-out-loud-funny chapter reads like a stand-up comedy bit. The more serious passages make you touch your finger to your temple and say, "Hmmmm." Biblical truth is cleverly injected into these comedic monologues. With witty section and chapter headings that make it easy to choose a story to read or revisit, this is truly a book of "infectious inspiration." You can certainly judge this book by its cover - creative, zany, fun and wholesome!
Hilarious and short takes on faith and life  Aug 15, 2008
I'm Not Crazy But I Might Be a Carrier by Charles Marshall is a hilariously funny look at life and faith and how the two intercede. Marshall has a ferocious sense of humor that translates well to the page. I found myself giggling out loud repeatedly at the beginning of each chapter and then really paying attention to Marshall's deeper point. He uses humor to connect with the reader and then digs into some deep areas of faith in an accessible way. This is a book to savor, reading just one chapter a day to put some fun and faith into your day. I highly recommend the book for some one (especially a guy) who may not normally feel comfortable reading a devotional but could use a little more time with God every day. I'm giving it to my stepdad who has an amazing sense of humor (and a collection of jokes to rival any comedian) but little time to read and relax.

Taking on society as a whole and mocking it (and himself)  Jul 12, 2008
Casual Dress Friday does not mean to show up to work in a casual dress, one of the many lessons taught by Charles Marshall in "I'm Not Crazy: But I Might be a Carrier". Taking on society as a whole and mocking it (and himself) as he encounters it all, "I'm Not Crazy" is a laugh riot from the first page to the last, sure to infect Marshall's brand of insanity upon his readers so they may spread it as well. "I'm Not Crazy: But I Might be a Carrier" is a top pick for community library humor shelves and for anyone who just needs a good joke.
