The Title Says It All...  Feb 16, 2008
I saw this book on a shelf last weekend, and the title called out to me. Could these authors possibly "get it" and understand many of the problems Christians are facing today are self-inflicted? Well, the short answer is "YES! They do."

Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz, Christians themselves, have written a great book analyzing many of the problems Christians face today. "I'm Fine With God, It's Christians I Can't Stand" presents their viewpoints in a style mixing lighthearted humor, frank commentary, and biblical references. Their refreshingly candid approach might be a harsh splash of cold water in the face of some Christians. But when the words used most often to describe Christians are judgmental, hypocritical, and self-righteous (to name a few), it is time for a wake-up call.

The authors do a great job of presenting the various issues, offering examples, and never failing to present a reasoned approach for Christians to consider on each topic. Rather than creating our own stumbling blocks along our way, the authors viewpoints will help open dialogue and hopefully get many Christians to address these issues and get back to sharing their faith, rather than beating people over the head with it.

I would recommend this book to every pastor, church staff member, and Christian who has ever run into another Christian they can't stand.
A look at the image reflected by Christians...  Jan 17, 2008
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for
According to the definition of a Christian is: a person who exemplifies in his or her life the teachings of Christ. Most Christians strive to be Christ- like, but there are always those who stand out in the crowd. Their behavior is anything but Christ- like, and their action disgrace His precious name. Christianity is judged by the actions of those proclaiming to be affiliated with the religion. It is unfortunate that many proclaiming to be Christian do not reflect the compassion of Christ Jesus.

"What one word best describes the reputation Christians have in our society?" The answer to this informal poll question was distressing. We are thought of as "judgmental, hypocritical, self-righteous, ignorant, pushy, dangerous, irrelevant, and obnoxious." I'm Fine With God...It's Christians I Can't Stand will force Christians to examine their conduct and actions.

There are ten chapters and each discusses a different aspect of a distorted attitude of some Christians. Some attempt to avoid anyone not proclaiming Christianity, perhaps they are afraid of being influenced by someone else's opinion or beliefs. Do Christians think their opinion is the only correct one? Many are not willing to listen to the opinions of others let alone bend their viewpoint. Some Christians are obsessed with the end of the world.

I'm Fine With God...It's Christians I Can't Stand by Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz is a logical look at the misconceptions and behaviors of some "Christians." The authors are lawyers and present their opinions in a commonsense, easy- to- understand form.

From the moment I read the title, I was hooked. As a Christian, I am appalled at the actions of "Christians." This book has caused me to examine my behaviors. I'm Fine With God...It's Christians I Can't Stand by Bruce Bickel, Stan Jantz should be required reading for pastors, church leaders, and all Christians.

Refreshing call to authentic Christianity  Jan 12, 2008
The title of this book is probably one that many people, some calling themselves Christians, some not, can echo - so many Christians can be off-putting to those searching for God, and to other Christians. This book takes a lighthearted and yet also sometimes serious look at several areas in which Christians may be distracted from Jesus's core message and may become a stumbling block to others. The areas are judgemental attitudes, hypocrisy and condemnation; mixing politics and the gospel; anti-science attitudes; prosperity gospel teachings; obsession with the end times; uninformed opinions about others' beliefs; unprofessional Christian media and entertainment and Christians who give God a bad name through false advertising.

The writing style is always lighthearted and easy to read although the font style in this pre-release copy was a little awkward to read at times. The authors laid out some of the believers' outlandish behaviour, explained the reasons behind it and then gave an alternative view as to how Christians could be more effective in today's world, backed up by Bible passages. There is a clear understanding of the nature of the world in the 21st century and that Christianity's pre-eminent place in American cultural life is now over. Although an American-authored book with some chapters that were less relevant to life in the UK, the overall message of the book was very apt and helpful. Whether those who fall into any of the listed categories would read this and then mend their ways is debatable but it was encouraging to read a book that reflects modern-day Christianity as it must appear to many of those on the outside, rather than the false view that is so often carried. It's good to be reminded of the importance of being salt and light and that so many of the ways in which we act can be the opposite of this.
Interesting viewpoint to ponder  Jan 11, 2008
Many in the world view Christians as extremists and hypocritical, based on their actions. More than not, many Christians also feel that way when they look at their colleagues in the Christian faith. Bickel and Jantz give detailed information about the peculiar and bizarre behaviour of the Christian radicals. Using humor, they address these issues with tact and give Christians a way to deal with these behaviours. The authors also address the issue of hypocrisy found in the Christian circle and explains the consequences of such actions.

Filled with anecdotes and stories, this is an excellent book. The authors establish rapport with their readers by admitting that they are not perfect and can also have done these actions, if given the chance. They encourage their readers to laugh at themselves and to change their behavior for the better.

Reading this book I found many of their ideas and thoughts relevant and right in my own life. Even though, extreme actions may not be committed by many Christians, the thoughts and ideas that govern these extreme actions are something that is prevalent in many firm believers of Jesus. Hence, I would recommend this book to all Christians.

In addition, this is a very good manual for non-Christians as well, since it will provide insight into the lives and ideas of Christians and will show them that extreme, radical behavior is an exception rather than the norm!
