Reviews - What do our customers think?
It spoke to me!  Sep 29, 2009
I am 23 years old and a true advocated for education! I was amazed at how wonderful my Bishop did on this book! He kept it real and stated the facts! Anyone who would get mad at what is stated in this book is not and have not been real with themselves for a LONG time! I recommend this book to anyone and it is one of the few books on my collection I would read over and over again!

Starts off well, but misses the target badly  Aug 26, 2009
Dixon knows his subject; the book is hard to put down. But his answers are all about black separatism, even including so-called black liberation theology. Unfortunately, his answers are no more likely to work than the heavy-handed government giveaways that have characterized policy toward the inner city over the last forty years. He comes close to saying that the black community has turned its back on God, but can't quite say it. Rather, he does what black leaders have done time and again: blame whitey. The reality is that the black (inner city) community will only improve if it repents from the afro-centric cultural nonsense that has given birth to hip-hop, pimping, drug dealing, and gutter morality. Dixon's long list of 32 recommendations are never going to happen unless he shortens it to one or two dramatically different demands. Ultimately, it is desireable for blacks to assimilate into the dominant white culture in America just as the Irish, Italians, Jews, Asians, Hispanics and Poles have done. That necessarily means imitating white culture, rather than building a weak substitute. That also means pursuit of higher education, starting careers at the bottom, foregoing affirmative action (which stigmatizes), and shunning out-of-wedlock births. Strong medicine, I know, but the black community is not going to improve its situation otherwise. And the number of black men in prison won't be reduced by more Black Heritage fairs or black-only shopping districts.

Phenomenal!!!  Apr 25, 2008
I am thankful and grateful to Bishop James Dixon for such a great work. We need to be challenged regularly to make these much needed changes in our community, starting with the man in the mirror. As I read small excerpts to my co-workers, many responded in shock, amazement and disbelief as I presented the facts of our current condition and predicament as a people. Watchmen, continue to cry aloud and spare not, and Lord open our eyes that we might see, is my prayer.

Wake Up Call to End Ignorance in America  Apr 6, 2008
James Dixon provides a multitude of information to support his reasons for why the black community in America is not performing as well as other races. This book is particularly helpful for middle class teachers, counselors, nurses, principals, and social workers who are working in low income levels. It provides a degree of understanding into the bleakness that the young black youth are bringing into society. While not all of his points are as valid as others, the book provides a gateway to begin discussion and understanding of a culture that is so different from the typical American dream. The American dream is lost on the generation that Dixon attempts to expound upon. The book was helpful in providing a mind set into the "thug society or culture" that has captured the hearts of so many young people in America. The author provides suggestions and hope for ways to end the grip of self-destruction on some segments of the population. This book is written for those who want to find ways to help youth achieve the American dream.

Hard Hitting and Important Message  Mar 2, 2008
This book may be directed at Black America, but the principles and issues James Dixon addresses in this powerful message apply to Americans of all races and ethnic backgrounds. This 190-page sermon knocks you right between the eyes almost from the start and then keeps going!

My only issues, and my personal opinions, with the author's points are that I believe he gives certain leaders like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton far too much credit. Indeed, the people Rev. Dixon quotes as original surfacers of the issues at hand, including Bill Cosby, are the very people who were among the first in the African American community to openly criticize Jackson and Sharpton. I find it deliciously ironic they have endorsed what Rev. Dixon preaches! These two would do well to permanently change their rhetoric and actions, and follow in the example of leadership exhibited by Rev. Dixon.

This "page turner" of a book is a must read if you want to have a clear, plain talk summary of the state of emergency existing in Black America today, and gain some practical things YOU can do to effect positive change. This is one of America's - and not just Black America's - most pressing issues today.

As an African American minister myself, take this advice: Buy and read this book! Then lend it to a friend to read it (just be sure to get it back so you can read it again)!
