I did it His Way, by Johnny Hart  May 11, 2010
I have used these cartoons as a lead-in to bible studies and are appropriate for all ages with light humor.
This book is a wonderful collection of cartoons with a christian theme. They are drawn with a simple message but when studied have a lot of scripture within the the drawings using icons within each cartoon. Enjoy.
Humor with more than just a punch line  Apr 19, 2010
B.C. and its companion strip Wizard of Id were among the first things I ever read. I learned a lot about the grown-up world, life, and people from B.C. When I saw this book, I snatched it right up. Didn't hesitate. While this is a gift for my dad on his 80th birthday, I am already planning to buy more for others. Johnny Hart was not just a brilliant cartoonist, he was a shrewd observer and reporter of human behavior. His late-in-life conversion to Christianity brought a dimension of humor and hope to his readers unrivaled in popular media. Highly recommended.
loved it!  Apr 12, 2010
It was all that I expected it to be...I have been a BC fan for a lonnnnng time, and this was the icing on the cake. I sincerely appreciate Mr. Hart's christianity, and plan on giving a copy of this book to my pastor and music minister this Christmas!
Definitely Worthy of Many Laughs and Thoughts  Jan 12, 2010
This book is a compilation of some of the late Johnny Hart's better known Christian-influenced comics when he was cartooning B.C. When Johnny Hart became a regenerated Christian, his comic strip took a noticeable change to incorporating a Christian witness - which is remarkable in and of itself because Brother Hart was a native of the Southern Tier of New York State, and not the Bible Belt of the Deep South.

Some of them are quite amusing and downright hilarious. Wiley's Dictionary doesn't leave much to the imagination in some cases, but if anyone has the ability to think in tangents, such words like in-sin-u-ate have a totally different meaning, especially with the reference to the Garden of Eden.

I was pleased to see them include the drawing where someone got a stain on their shirt. So the shirt was taken in the blood-stained river, washed out white, and that the source of the water was from Golgotha. That one was one of the more memorable drawings that Johnny Hart did.

However, I was a bit disappointed that they did not include the strip from September 9, 2001. I can't remember all the details, but I do remember that it was published in Stars & Stripes. Some character chiseled a message on a stone tablet that said something like (I'm paraphrasing here), "Here we have kicked God out of our schools and out of our society." He tossed it in the ocean and waited for a response from someone out there in the distance (like his character normally did). The reply was, "Way to go, Kid! Hell's going to have a party when you get here!" As coincidental as it was, two days later, it was 9/11. I will never forget the timing, and yet I wish that this clip was included in the book, given the significance of it and the historical events that followed soon thereafter.

Other than where I think they could have "improved", in my estimation, this book deserves a place in everyone's bookshelves. Five stars.
Some pieces made me smile, others made me wince  Jan 8, 2010
First, a couple observations unrelated to the religious content of the book. I suggest one reads the "About Johnny Hart" section found at the back of the book before wading into the actual comic strips. This will give you insight into Hart's life, including both trial and triumph. You will appreciate where his ideas for B.C. came from, and this will help you better appreciate the messages within the comic strip. For example, this book contains numerous strips that show B.C. characters appreciating the natural world around them, and given that Hart himself loved to be outdoors, you can see how his view on the beauty of the Earth shows up in his artwork and humor. Another general comment I have is that Hart's humor is indeed dry and witty. It is full of puns and takes many creative liberties with a weekly comic strip that most cartoonists don't. Some strips are not even meant to be funny, and that is actually refreshing, because life is not always funny.

Now, about the religious and political content. I am a faithful Presbyterian, just like Hart. Nevertheless, my views appear to be less conservative. Therefore, when Hart's comics make fun of evolutionary theory and the lack of religious education in public schools, I rolled my eyes. Of course, I would never do that in front of someone who holds different political views than me, but in private, I rolled my eyes and went on to the next comic.

This book contains a very large number of strips that refer to the garden of Eden story from Genesis, where a snake entices Eve and Adam to eat the forbidden fruit (this is called the original sin). Combined with an equally large number of strips that refer to Jesus saving us from our sins, I can see that Hart's main religious emphasis is that people sin and God will forgive our sins because of Jesus' sacrifice. This is a fair interpretation of the New Testament of the Bible (especially if you are Presbyterian), so Hart has gotten it right. Nevertheless, I would have appreciated a more expansive view of the glory of God. For example, not all human behaviors are sinful or displeasing to God. I would have liked to see more discussion of how God is (sometimes? often?) pleased by humanity. I recognize however, that Hart was producing B.C. for a general audience and so his opportunities to present a religious-themed strip were limited (i.e. Easter and Christmas). Given that Easter and Christmas are major holidays centered on the birth and resurection of Christ and corresponding forgiveness of sins, I can see why Hart did not stray far from that theme.
