Item Description...
America is in the midst of a demographic revolution. The old cone-shaped age chart with many younger people and fewer older people is obsolete. It has now been replaced by a column-shaped one. The fastest-growing demographic group is adults over 65. How to Minister Among Older Adults helps congregations minister to older adult members. It shows how to mobilize ministry by older adults. The book offers practical procedures, Bible studies, and workshop outlines to revitalize older adult ministry.

How to Minister Among Older Adults  May 24, 2006
Knippel, Charles T. How to Minister Among Older Adults. Saint Louis: Concordia
Publishing House, 2005. (173 pages)

Charles Knippel has written an interesting guide for ministers. In this book he lays out quite a lot of information from the perspective of a minister to other people in the pastorate. He beings with a discussion of the issue at hand; describing the large increasing number of senior adults in our world today. From Here Knippel goes on to speak about these peoples specific needs and how they affect the church today. Knippel also suggests that the church has largely failed seniors in recent years and challenges the leaders of tomorrow's church to act.
Along with a large number of Scripture references Charles Knippel talks openly about the biblical perspective on ageing (I wasn't a huge fan of this section - it seems to me that everyone wants to look at it too much in the positive and while the Bible speaks well of ageing it speaks only negatively about the point of death). Knippel also has a great section on "the gift of retirement" and how senior adults must decide how to view and use that gift. Knippel also writes about the churches worship repose to seniors as far as music and fellowship and even spends some time on the issue of seniors and stewardship. Additionally Charles Knippel makes a great point to suggest that seniors in churches must be willing to care for one another both within the Christian community and outside the Christian community. He makes suggestions about ways to help people nearing retirement age and how they can come to grips with the major shifts and changes they are about to face and also writes to help those who have recently retired and find them selves questioning their place in the world. Moreover Knippel writes about depression, loss, the agitation of a retired spouse and talks specifically about seeking understanding. Perhaps most helpful though is the appendix section where Charles Knippel gives some sample documents to help evaluate and develop seniors care within the parish. Among these, can be found a survey to evaluate ones church, questionnaires for senior interest and involvement and some general demographic information.
