Good but not for beginners?  Dec 21, 2006
I borrowed this book from the library and found plenty of interesting items. I chose about 8 patterns and/or stitches to study and jot down. The charts for the stitch patterns seemed fine, but the written instructions contained an astonishing number of errors, and I found simple typos in several spots as well. There must have been no proofreading at all. If the small portions of the book I looked at had so many errors, I wonder about the rest of it. I would still recommend the book for an experienced crocheter, and for a beginner only if he/she had a mentor on standby. If you prefer written instructions to charts, you may get frustrated.
Not for beginners  Feb 28, 2006
This book has some crochet information you won't find any where else. It is a great book for intermediate and experienced crocheters, but there are tons of better ones for beginning crocheters. The projects and photographs are enticing but don't buy it unless you already understand all the crochet terms, stitches and symbols.
Good beginner and reference book!!  Oct 19, 2005
I disagree with the reviewers who say this isn't good for beginners. It has very clear instructions. It isn't exhaustive but it is good to teach you how to read patterns and do buttons, braids, tunisian, broomstick lace, flowers, filet, etc. Teaches the puff stitch and the cluster stitch nicely! Lots of various stitches and some good patterns. Tells you the weight of yarn used in the pattern so you can easily substitute from your stash. Patterns: large shopping bag, padded coat hangers, book covers, rug, pillow cover, mittens (child & adult), camisole, child & adult Aran sweater, blanket, a round & a square pillow, throw, small & large bags, hairband, slippers, shade/window edging and a stole.
Thank goodness for the internet  Mar 5, 2005
As a complete beginner, I have finally taught myself how to CORRECTLY sc, but only after looking at a couple of other books and a few websites. I understand that there is a lot of variation in crochet, but Pauline Turner gives several misleading (or just plain incorrect?) instructions. First, for sc, she says to insert the hook in the third chain from the hook for the foundation - everywhere else I've looked says to insert it in the SECOND chain from the hook. Also, she says that for sc, the turning chain counts as a stitch, but every other source (plus common sense) says that the turning chain in sc does NOT count as a stitch.

Also, even if her instructions were accurate, they, along with some of the diagrams, are confusing, and the organization of the book is not great (instead of having all of the stitches in one place, she puts a few at the end of each chapter).

So, if you have some crochet skills, this book might be ok (I think I MIGHT be able to use it a little more effectively now, although I haven't tried). Otherwise, prepare to be very frustrated!
A very useful book for the novice.  Aug 7, 2004
I have just received the above book, and am delighted with it. It is the first time I have bought on the internet. I found this book in our area library and liked it so much, I kept on taking it out! Buying it locally proved to be impossible - so decided it was such a good reference book to my very new skills as a crochet-person, purchase was a necessity. I have always admired this craft and after a demonstration of crochet at our machine knitting club - have become quite enthusiastic! The book was in excellent condition when it arrived here in far away N.Z. in about 12 days. So thanks to all concerned - I love it!
