Item Description...
Rare-books dealer August Adams is enmeshed in the mystery surrounding another book-this time The Gospels of Henry the Lion.
In 1983, a mysterious book reappeared. The book was The Gospels of Henry the Lion.
Created in 1188, the book was a chronicle of Henry's aspirations to
become the most powerful ruler in the world. But the book was only a
part of the mystery. Henry was also the originator of the legendary
Guelph Treasure-a collection of history's most significant religious
relics. Legend said that The Gospels of Henry the Lion held the key to finding them.
Now it's up to August, April, and Charlie to find out if the legend
is true. Not that they don't have problems of their own. April has a
meddlesome boyfriend. Charlie has a schoolyard bully on his back. And
August's long-estranged father has suddenly decided to enter his life
again. What they discover about the treasure-and themselves-will change
their lives forever.

Publishers Description

A mysterious book with a dangerous secret.

An evil brotherhood out to conquer the world.

One man stands between them . . . with his family in the balance.

In the twelfth century, Henry the Lion collected the rarest relics in Christendom. And to protect his most precious acquisitions, he encoded the whereabouts in a gorgeous illuminated manuscript called "The Gospels of Henry the Lion. "

The manuscript has been showing up and disappearing ever since. No one knows where the relic has been hidden . . . or its ultimate power.

Only one man holds the key to the mystery.

He's carrying it in his briefcase at his son's school for show-and-tell, and he thinks it's a fake. But he's about to find out just how real it is.

Because the wolves are rapidly closing in. And if August Adams can't decode the secret in time, the world's balance of power will forever be altered.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Good Read for DaVinci Code Fans  Jun 24, 2009
The central character in House of Wolves, August Adams, is a dealer in rare books who unexpectedly receives a package from his estranged father: an ancient illuminated manuscript of The Gospels of Henry the Lion. August is immediately plunged into a deadly mystery that runs him afoul of The Black Vehm, an ancient brotherhood which seeks to get its hands on the book at all costs.

Soon, August finds himself reunited with his father and ex-wife, and along with his son, must try to outwit the Black Vehm while solving a mystery that ties in a biblical relic with a Nazi plot.

Echoes of Dan Brown resonate throughout this story. The illuminated book must be paired with another document, and the resulting message must then be decoded. August is average in almost all ways, except for his extraordinary memory and an uncanny ability to decipher codes. The ancient brotherhood is filled with conspiracies, competing factions, and even a sympathetic back-story for one of its killers.

There are many things to like about this story. The action gets rolling right away and doesn't slow down. Bronleewe throws in a few satisfying twists, and also casts doubt about the motivations of multiple characters, adding to the suspense. He also does justice to the mystery element of the story, so that the plot is more than a series of escapes and near-misses along the way to the final showdown.

On the negative side of the ledger is that August is not an engaging character. Toward the end of the book, I discovered that I was eager to reach the end of the story and learn how the mystery was solved, but I did not care if August and his annoying son survived. In terms of setting, Bronlewee short-changes the location of the story's climax. I would have enjoyed more description and a greater sense of wonder surrounding the final showdown.

House of Wolves is nevertheless a solid thriller for those who enjoy biblical mysteries, and I look forward to Bronleewe's next effort.
Phenomenal story!  Jun 9, 2009
This second book from Matt Bronleewe is just as good as his first "Illuminated" if not better! Both read like a movie. I couldn't put it down. It's like a skillfully written combination of National Treasure and The DaVinci Code. Awesome! I hope he plans on writing more!
Fun followup  Feb 27, 2009
I was worried about a sophomore slump, but this book is even better than the first August Adams book. The plot moves, and more importantly the characters do, too (I hated the whole "August spends the entire book on a plane" thing in the first book).

The pacing in this book is very fast, similar to the first book. I still think this series would make a great TV miniseries (or even better, an Alternate Reality Game - ahem, Thomas Nelson). Diverse plotlines come together at the end -- I loved this part; much better than Illuminated.

I never liked August Adams in Illuminated; I still don't like him that much, but I'm starting to warm up to him. His father is a fascinating character, and I hope Bronleewe keeps him around for at least the next book. Saying much more about my favorite characters would end up getting into spoiler territory; suffice to say that I was very happy to see the characters fleshed out more in this book, and look forward to future installments.
Exciting action/adventure novel!  Jan 2, 2009
I loved the fact that the author used fact and fables regarding Hitler's obsession with relics to come up with one dynamic tale. Only I wouldn't recommend getting attached to some of the characters as they tended to get picked off by the killers along the way. This novel sort of reminds me of Relentless by Robin Parrish or Germ by Robert Liparulo in that it is fast paced and there is a serious manhunt going on with many casualties and a lot of gruesome stuff done with knives. Oh, and things blowing up, lots of chasing scenes, and shooting guns, etc. Doesn't that just sound like an action packed story? It wasn't too gross for me, though, and I tend to be a wimp.

The quality of the author's writing and the plot was very well done. Bronleewe has a unique story telling style. For people who like "National Treasure" and "Indiana Jones" type stories, this is sure to please. I also loved how things turned out in the end for the main characters. For an action/thriller type novel, this ranks toward the top of my list. The twists and turns were believeable and well done. It held my attention and the plot details fascinated me. I don't know how the author kept track of all of that information and how he tied it together, but it seemed flawless. Great story! I can't wait for the next installment!

A Real Page Turner!  Oct 16, 2008
I started this book one night before bedtime and read well into the night. The next night I did the same. On the third day I found my mind often wandering to the story line wondering how it was going to end. My family wanted to go to a bookstore that evening (before bedtime) so while they browsed I picked up a store copy of the book and finished it right at closing time! I finally got a good nights sleep! If you haven't read "Illuminated" yet, start with it and "House of Wolves" will make better sense. Just make sure you are well rested before you begin!
