Reviews - What do our customers think?
Good News for Turbulent Times  Dec 4, 2007
Hope in Conflict: Discovering Wisdom in Congregational Turmoil, by David Sawyer (Pilgrim Press) is a book that restores your faith in two things - belief that congregations are redemptive fellowships and that God's grace exempts itself from no quarter of our lives, including our infighting.
This book offers us the unseasonal flowering of hope, that brings healing energy to churches in conflict, and to those who are called to lead them.
Ultimately, it is a proclamation of faith and a call to the renewal of faith and the gift of wisdom in servant ministry. In this sense this book is not for those who are looking for techniques for reconciliation or tools for short-term relief or solutions. Instead this volume invites us back into the holiness and the mystery of the Spirit's transforming power.
The guides for this journey are the structural family therapists, Edwin Friedman and Salvatore Minuchin; and the theologians, Daniel Day Williams, Craig Dykstra, and John Cobb. What David Sawyer has done is weave both theology and practice in a nice web that balances theory and discernment by walking us through case studies of congregations, as he describes the phenomenon of hope that God unfolds through the community of faith.
The book is altogether clear and easy to read. An additional asset is the way it guides our attention to summary questions at the close of each chapter that help us to understand keys to the mysteries of conflict, how to see ourselves in contexts of conflict, and the perception of clues for discernment of hope in congregations' patterns of behavior. These fruits do not come easily. They spring from patience, compassion, and trusting the slow work of God. But when you've finished this book, you have a sense that God wants to do something new in all our lives.
