Item Description...
"Short, sample homilies based on the two-year weekday cycle of the Catholic Lectionary for Mass"--Provided by publisher.

Publishers Description

Looking for homily suggestions that faithfully represent the Scripture readings and offer hearers of the text practical applications for Christian life?" Homilies for Weekdays," the first of two volumes by Father Don Talafous, OSB, contains creative suggestions of what a homilist might say about the daily readings for the two-year Lectionary cycle.

This extensive compilation for each day is a result of Father Talafous ' many years of experience in preparing homilies. Written on both a popular and pastoral level, these homily ideas may also serve as daily reflections or meditations on the Scriptural texts for readers interested in nourishing their Christian lives with Scripture.

Also available "Homilies for Weekdays: "Three-volume set

Light on insight. The brevity of daily messages
does not allow for depth of development.
Not even inspiring as a devotional.
Not Just for Preachers!  Nov 28, 2005
Let's hope that the title of this work doesn't limit its audience to only those who preach, because Fr. Talafous has something to offer anyone who prays or wishes to pray with scripture. Homilies for Weekdays Year II devotes roughly half a page to each day of the liturgical year. Each entry contains citations for the day's readings followed by a relevant and clearly expressed reflection. For a reading from John 16, Fr. Talafous considers prayer in ordinary life. "Prayer is a practice that makes absolutely no sense apart from a genuine trust in God and in God's willingness to help," he writes. Our trust is often rewarded in subtle rather than showy ways, for example acceptance, faith, or a measure of peace comes over the person for whom we are praying, though his or her troubles are not magically lifted.

Since the book contains no suggestions for use, I will recommend an "anything goes" approach to match the user's circumstances. Ideally, one would set aside at least 20 minutes a day to look up the scripture passages, read the reflection, and absorb it, perhaps pulling out a word or phrase to recall throughout the day. On the other hand, just reading the reflection (preferably for the appropriate day) would provide inspiration. "Homilies" is an excellent resource for small Christian communities and bible study groups as well as individuals.
