Twenty-seven-year-old Sarah Graham travels to a tiny hamlet in New York following the death of her estranged father to claim her inheritance, only to learn that his will stipulates a six-month stay before she can collect the money.

Publishers Description
After he mother's death and her father's abandonment, tiny infant Sarah Graham was left to be raised by her emotionally distant grandmother. As a child she turned to music for solace and even gained entrance to Juilliard. But her potentially brilliant music career ended with an unplanned pregnancy and the stillborn birth of her child. In an attempt to escape the past, Sarah, now twenty-seven, is living life hard and fast--and she is flat broke. When her estranged father dies, she travels to the tiny mountain hamlet of Jonah, New York, to claim her inheritance. Once there, she learns her father's will stipulates a six-month stay before she can receive the money. Fueled by hate and desperation, Sarah settles in for the bitter mountain winter, and as the weeks pass, she finds her life intertwining with the lives of the simple, gracious townsfolk. Can these strangers teach Sarah how to forgive and find peace?A story of grace, of God's never-ceasing love, and sometimes flawed, faithful people He uses to bring His purposes to pass.

A Rough, Real Story  May 25, 2010
In early May, Christa Parrish's novel "Watch Over Me" was named the 2010 Christian Book award winner in the fiction category by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. In Christian book publishing, this is a big deal. And it's a well deserved honor. Parrish's first novel, "Home Another Way," had been nominated for the award in 2008 but another novel was chosen.

"Home Another Way" is an unusual book; unusual, that is, for Christian fiction. Within the very first few pages, the reader meets Sarah Graham, who must be the most unlikely heroine ever encountered in a Christian novel. She's rude, crude, conniving, obnoxious and totally unlikeable, as in, this is one offensive character. She comes to the small town of Jonah, New York, to claim an inheritance from her deceased father, whom Sarah had despised and hadn't seen for more than 20 years while he was in prison - for murdering her mother (and you thought your family was dysfunctional). She finds a room at a local inn, gets something to eat, finds a pub - and promptly picks up a one-night stand, whose name she can't remember the next morning.

I told myself that, if this novel was going to work, there was going to be one massive act of character redemption before the book was over with.

Sarah learns that her inheritance has a catch - she has to live in the town for six months. Since her car's been stolen and she's broke, she decides to do exactly that. And in those six months, she finds people she comes to love, values that have been alien to her, someone she's attracted to romantically, and, ultimately, the truth about her father.

It is a tribute to Parrish that she doesn't take this story into a clichéd and predictable direction. She could have, and easily. There were several points at which I wanted her to do exactly that. But she didn't. She kept the story real.

She's also created a cast of unforgettable characters. From the crotchety Doc who knows more about Sarah's father than he's telling, to a very large woman named Memory with a brain-damaged son, Parrish has made what could have been stereotypes into originals.

When I finished reading it, I wanted to say "Sequel! Sequel!" And perhaps there will be, one day. But "Home Another Way" is the kind of novel that is sufficient without one. It's a rough, hard story to read. But it's also a true one.
Where's the Sequel?  Mar 12, 2010
I enjoyed Home Another Way. I was pleased with the author's fresh approach to an unregenerated soul's struggle, not a pie-in-the sky predicable book at all, which I loved; however, I guess I was looking for the pie-in-the-sky ending. The ending left me wanting more!

Write a sequel please!
Excellent, but Flawed Style  Mar 10, 2010
First of all, I loved this book and the characters. The "return to parent's hick hometown" plot has been done before, but this was executed beautifully. Sarah was a wretched character, and yet completely compelling--partly because I felt sorry for her, and partly because I just wanted to know what she'd say next. She was often surprising, but it never felt forced. I loved that the sweet, welcoming Christian mom liked Sarah fine--until her son was attracted to her. The minor characters are beautifully detailed and humorous.
However, I was so annoyed by the way Sarah's brilliant first-person voice was constantly interrupted by third-person accounts of these minor characters. Why was this necessary? They all seemed to say, "I'm a good person, and I sure care about that Sarah kid"--which I got from Sarah's account. (Don't take my word on this; they might've eventually given some important information, but I started skimming them after the third one.) They weren't long, and they weren't every other chapter, but I can't give 5 stars to a book I didn't want to read all of. Did Ms. Parrish feel that Sarah was too unlikeable for readers to stay with for the long haul? (She isn't.) Did she feel that the minor characters' thoughts and struggles needed to be fleshed out? (They didn't.) It completely threw me out of the story.
I heartily recommend this book. Just remember it's about 25 pages shorter than it looks.
Loved it!  Feb 19, 2010
I loved this book. It was difficult to put down. The characters were real and captured my heart. I also enjoyed that there was a twist I was not expecting. Can't wait to read Christa's next book.
Wonderful book  Jan 21, 2010
This was a wonderful, can't put down, book. I only wish she had done a sequel.
