Reviews - What do our customers think?
one to own  Aug 21, 2003
Most books I borrow from the library. Then I buy them if they are worth it. This book made me buy it. These are poems full of humanity and an obvious love of language.
countering blazes  Jun 24, 2003
disclosure: i am the author's ex-brother-in-law

i have a variety of poetry books on my book shelf, most of them well-known and respected poets, and there is none i like more than karen brennan's, "here on earth" (i keep telling her that and she just laughs). it's a small, unassuming book to behold, but when read, it assumes a disproportionate stature, because it is full of poems that are everything poems are supposed to be: sonorous, surprising, mysterious, earthy. please don't let the above review dissuade you from considering this book. for the record, anyone who knows karen would certainly rate her among the least likely to write a hallmark card kind of poem. blazes' review is just silly, so i had to say something.

So much for pathos  Nov 1, 1998
You ever get that feeling that someone was sneaking up behind you, bitter, with a knife ready to splack it right in your neck? The pain being both alert, shaved, and terrifying like rusty nails? Well, you don't get that feeling when reading these "poems." On the same level of mediocrity as Hallmark cards, but not exactly, these poems have a haze of luke-warm, as if imaging someone repeating "blah, and blah, and blah" in the background, until an almost silence lulls you to a lobotomized almost sleep. At least Hallmark cards know what they are. "Florida" for example reminds one that TV isn't as bad as they say it is compared to bad pastoral poetry. But it really isn't "bad poetry." Bad poetry can be interesting at times. Some bad poetry can be spoken from the heart. Some bad poetry still manages to prick the spine. No, these are poems to read when nature calls to move things along, or when nothing calls, or when death seems an option. They are to forget all too quickly, and not to say much about...
