Publishers Description
Henri Nouwen: A Book of Hours is a beautiful new compilation based on the writings of Henri Nouwen, one of the greatest spiritual teachers of our time. It is edited and compiled by Robert Waldron.

Nouwen spent his life helping people respond to the universal yearning for love, unity and communion that doesn t go away. He probed deeply at the meaning of living a spiritual life that embraces pain and suffering in ourselves and in the world, yet nevertheless gives us freedom to love deeply wherever we are.

More than a prayer book, Henri Nouwen: A Book of Hours, if followed faithfully, helps structure our daily routine with prayer; thus, not only sanctifying our relationship with God, but also sanctifying the minutes and hours of each day. "

Tastes of Nouwen Arranged for Our Immersion in Prayer  Jul 21, 2009
I love little pocket-sized prayer books like this one. I've collected dozens of them over the decades and enjoy the challenge and clarity that comes with a focused theme for a season of prayer.

I'm also a longtime follower of the writings of Henri Nouwen, who we lost in 1996. He was such a beloved writer and teacher that I recall listening to a talk by Chicago's equally respected spiritual teacher Cardinal Bernardin. At that time, Nouwen was in his prime and Bernardin was talking to a group of other Catholic bishops about the emerging crop of spiritual writers who sometimes were outshining senior clergy in their ability to teach and move audiences. Bernardin told his fellow bishops about once having been booked to speak to a major conference--only to be told that he was bumped from his top spot "because Nouwen suddenly was available."

For those who didn't follow Nouwen's remarkable and spiritually provocative career, this little prayer book may be a tasty sampler of his insights. Pray along with these bits and pieces for some weeks, then you're likely to want to know more about the original works.

For myself, I'm especially drawn to Nouwen's constant faith that we can move through darkness into light, that we find the most insight among the neediest of people and that it is only in admitting our own vulnerability that we find new strength.

A super little spiritual tool that fits in your pocket. Who can ask for more?
Book of Hours  Apr 30, 2009
It is by a person who knew Henri Nouwen. I really like Nouwen's books so I like this one also. He is such a good theologian.
Excellent selections from Henri Nouwen  Apr 14, 2009
This book is, as the title suggests, written in the style of a book of hours. The selections are well chosen and since an index is provided for where they came from, I am sure it will lead the reader to want to read other writings by Nouwen. It is nicely formatted with some pleasant illustrations, comfortable to hold in the hand and, except for the price, which I consider a little high, it is an excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys special readings for various times of the day. In addition to selections from Henri Nouwen, the Angelus, Salve Regina, and verses from the Holy Bible are included for each day.
Henri Nouwen: A Human Being  Mar 4, 2009
Robert Waldron's Henri Nouwen: A Book of Hours weaves together excerpts from the writings of this Dutch pastoral theologian in the form of a modern day Book of Hours. Waldron has arranged his prayer book around the Catholic Church's major canonical hours, those set intervals of time throughout the day and night when certain prayers are recited by monks, nuns and others. This valuable resource provides readings and reflections covering a four-week period of prayer and captures beautifully, the essence of Nouwen's spirituality.

Henri Nouwen was an inspired writer and teacher who wrestled mightily with his own humanity. He struggled with loneliness, depression and vulnerability. Eventually, he was able to embrace his own brokenness and in so doing, became more accessible to all.

Waldron has selected excerpts from Nouwen's writings which focus on the compassion, accessibility, openness, mercy, hospitality and unconditional love of a God who accepts and cherishes all people unconditionally.

This lovely book of prayer provides another means to enhance one's own relationship with an unconditionally merciful and loving God.
