More About F. X. Schouppe & Thomas A. Nelson

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Father F.X. Schouppe, S.J. was an eminent theologian of the nineteenth century. He was the author of Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints and The Dogma of Hell. His purpose with the latter work, though the subject itself is terrifying, was not to sensationalize or to horrify, but rather to instruct people on the reality of Hell and to excite them to a dread of losing Heaven. The Dogma of Hell was originally published in 1883 by P.V. Hickey, and Purgatory Explained was printed in the late 1800s with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur.

F. X. Schouppe was born in 1823 and died in 1904.

Escape from the AntiChrist (THE DEVIL)  Oct 19, 2006
Just like the movie "Escape from New York" one is on a countdown when Jesus Christ will come back and save those who believe, Follow, and love HIS word. Then the devil himself will appear to the world in human form once after the rapture of Jesus Christ has occurred. I am a rotten sinner, but through prayer and repentance/confession to Christ Himself is the way, is the way that we all can be saved, and are worthy of eternal salvation. Get a good King James Bible or the ESV Holy Bible and start reading and start changing for the better because the bottom two reviews are right. How so? That many people who reject Christ at any capacity will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Eternal salvation lies not in the way of man or in false religions but in the belief of Christ Jesus, and His Holy Word...the book He Himself left in this world, The Holy Bible.
The Holy Bible is the answer, please read it, and follow the law, Gods Law and not the way of man. [...]. Well i have to go and pray for salvation. Christ God Loves you. Change.
Essential Reading for All Christians!  Jul 2, 2006
This book is essential reading for all Christians let alone Catholics and is a timely reminder that hell does exist and we should not be too complacent with our faith and end up losing the prize that Christ has won for us. To say that belief in Christ alone is necessary for salvation is a self-deluding argument that totally ignores scripture and the teachings of Christ himself.

In the Gospels, Jesus frequently speaks about hell and how hard it is to get to heaven with references to the eye of a needle and to use the narrow gate etc. The parable about separating the sheep from the goats is especially telling. When the goats who obviously believe in Jesus as they say they preached about Jesus and cast out demons in his name and yet asked when did they see Jesus. Jesus replies that they didn't visit him in prison, clothed the naked etc concluding that because they did not do good to the least of their brethren, they neglected to do so to him and the parable ends with Jesus sending them to hell. If faith alone is enough, what did the goats do wrong?

Also, the letter of James reminds us that faith without good works is a dead faith. This book ia a great reminder that hell is a reality if we don't start paying attention to our faith and doing good works as a response and evidence of our faith.

Highly recommended!
Jesus Christ is True Lord and Savior but "Mary" is NOT Savior  Dec 23, 2005
In order to obtain Salvation, one must believe in Jesus Christ always, as well as believing in His Commandments, but this book has an area that has called my attention and it is in(the end) chapters in where it is said that one has to Pray to Mary always, but this is a false message. I'd say that 90 percent of the book is right, but then praying to Mary is wrong because she is not the way to salvation. Praying to false gods will ony get us to Hell in the end. The only way that one can see the father (God)is through the son-Jesus Christ. The true God here is Jesus Christ. One must pray to Him(Jesus Christ)always. Roman Catholicism is phony because they say that Mary is the Christ(by the pictures they have, and by the scriptures they create), that Mary is the way to Salvation but it is all a trick by the devil-in order for one to go to hell. So don't worship Mary, but Worship Jesus Christ. Always and Forever. Remember Preachers don't own religion, and they don't own you. The Only Real Father you have is Jesus Christ. I recommend that you get and read the HOLY BIBLE ESV Version. Be familiar with the Bible and watch TBN (BIBLE TV) So you can know what is false and what is not. (I am the person who wrote the bottom review) but you need to know that the Catechism is really messed up because some of those elements are in the "How to avoid hell book" . One always prays to Christ. It is just YOU and the BIBLE, SO READ IT. Do i recommend this book? Yes, but just don't listen/read nor follow this issue of Mary being the way to Salvation because she is not. Christ is coming back soon, and you need to believe in Him in order to be granted Eternal Salvation. Mary, and the saints, and having church membership will never get you to Heaven for eternity, but it is through faith in Jesus Christ. So follow His Word forever and forever and forever(Christ's word only). Last note: Never call a Preacher "Father" because that is wrong, you only call him preacher, your Real Father is God the father who is in the Heavens, so Respect His Name Always. Many people(regardless of their image, social status, and race) will go to Hell, but few will go to Heaven so do your best at working on your salvation.
A Must Read...  Aug 23, 2003
Just the title in today's world seems taboo!!! No matter you be Protestant, Catholic or any of the other faiths, this book will bind you to its pages! The written vision that this book gives, from 100's of years of oral and written history, is both frightening and compelling. Do know that it was compiles over about 100 yrs ago so political correctness is all but non-existent. As a Catholic I can appreciate the writings of Fr. Schouppe, for he not only shows God's justified wrath, he also shows His blind forgiveness! The greatest part of this book is that in the last half you are given INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO AVIOD HELL! May God bless all who read this...
BEWARE- This book could lead you into scrupulosity.  Jul 5, 2003
BEWARE- If you are the type of person who constantly berates themselves and inflicts self-punishment, this book could lead you to become too scrupulous. A priest told me to put the book away and get into some lighter reading. We should all try to do our best to be good Christians, but we should be joyful and full of love. This book could lead you into despair. While the dogma of hell shouldn't be taken lightly, we also need to be careful not to start seeing sin where sin doesn't exist and remember God's mercy.
