Item Description...
The Christian doctrine of heaven has been a moral source of enormous power in western culture. It has provided a striking account of the ultimate good in life and has for two millennia animated the hope that our lives can be fully meaningful. Recently, however, the doctrine of heaven has lost much of its grip on the western imagination and has become a vague and largely ignored part of the Christian creed. Not only have our hopes been redefined as a result, but our very identity as human beings has been altered.
In this book, Jerry L. Walls argues that the doctrine of heaven is ripe for serious reconsideration. He contends not only that the orthodox view of heaven can be defended from objections commonly raised against it, but also that heaven is a powerful resource for addressing persistent philosophical problems, not the least of which concern the ground of morality and the meaning of life. Walls shows how heaven is integrally related to central Christian doctrines, particularly those concerning salvation, and tackles the difficult problem of why faith in Christ is necessary to save us from our sins. In addition, heaven is shown to illumine thorny problems of personal identity and to be an essential component of a satisfactory theodicy. Walls goes on to examine data from near-death experiences from the standpoint of some important recent work in epistemology and argues that they offer positive evidence for heaven. He concludes that we profoundly need to recover the hope of heaven in order to recover our very humanity.

Great Look at Heaven  May 6, 2008
I've now read 3 Jerry Walls books and they have all been great. One of the things that strikes me about Walls is his non-dogmatic approach to his theology and philosophy. This is evident in this book. Not only is this responsible speculation of what heaven may look like, it is a solid defense of the logic of heaven in the face of so much modern skepticism on the topic. I really enjoyed his "purgatory for almost everyone" as it would certainly resolve much of the tension created when consideration is not given to some type of post-mortem purification. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is at times Walls seems to drift off topic making it difficult to follow. This is a very intense book and I had to read some sections multiple times to grasp the meaning. You will definitely enjoy this book as it combines philosophy with theology and covers a wide range of views on the topic, both ancient and modern.
Nicely done....  Jul 19, 2005
In a patient yet focused manner, Jerry Walls compares the naturalistic worldview with the Christian concept of heaven. Proffering an alternative to the void which is nihilism, Walls deploys a gentle logic which ultimately sides with the definitive goodness of God and eternal bliss. Of course, one must believe in God before one can contemplate heaven and, so, this book has little utility for the materialist. For the faithful, however, this is a deeply intriguing book which reasons effectively, if controversially, in favor of purgatory and the universal opportunity for salvation.

Heaven: The Logic of Eternal Joy assuages many contradictions and conundrums that might concern the reflective believer such as the retention of personal identity and the problem of evil. It is life-affirming and inspiring and an excellent philosophical resource for those interested in the challenges of Christian apologetics and eschatology. 5 stars.
Excellent book  Feb 12, 2005
This is some of Walls best if not his best writing. His thoughts are well formed and orthodox and his language is precise and accurate. Furthermore, he argues for a God of Love who is trying to entice as many people as possible into heaven and who gives everyone their fair chance to be exposed to the Gospel. Some may find his view of almost-purgatory a bit offensive, but under careful consideration it makes a lot of sense. Thank you Jerry.
Entertaining & Thought-Provoking  Apr 18, 2004
Jerry Walls deserves four stars for this book for the following reason: this book is simply interesting and inovative. He's taken a largely neglected issue and attempted to show how it has significance for our lives now, as well as defended its cogency. Part of his worry is that the doctrine of hell has been attacked on several fronts (see his book, Hell: The Logic of Damnation) and he believes, correctly, that heaven is next on the hit list.

Walls brings up the relevance of personal identity, near-death experiences, questions about who will be in heaven, what it takes to get into heaven, and the relevance of heaven for our moral beliefs. He also goes out on limb and argues for a type of inclusivism (at least he thinks it is) and a form of purgatory.

I think this book suffers has serious flaws in each and every chapter, but believe this is an interesting book and nevertheless would be worth having if you are going to be thinking about the topic of heaven. At the very least, it raises and helpfully summarizes the issues involved.

Real "Heaven" Book!!!  Aug 16, 2002
At Last, I finally found a book on heaven with realistic, objective, and fair perspectives. This is not only inspiring but more than that: It recovered my vision of heaven. This book is a THROUGH and fair study of heaven. I feel like I can finally rest from the confusion about heaven but rest in the real Heaven (eternal joy). My sincere admiration resides in the fact that someone wrote such a book to capture the reality and the power of the Eternity!
