Item Description...
In Heaven and Hell, Swedenborg gives the reader a detailed description of the afterlife. He deals with God, heaven, hell, angels, spirits, and devils; and he addresses the issues of who is in heaven and hell. Are there any Jews, Muslims and people of pre-Christian times such as pagan Romans and Greeks in heaven? He posits that the love of self or of the world drives one towards hell, and love of God and fellow men towards heaven. Here is the most influential and important book ever written on the subject

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish scientist, nobleman, and theologian who spent his life investigating the mysteries of the soul. Born in Stockholm to a staunchly Lutheran family, he graduated from the University of Uppsala and then traveled to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study the leading scientists of the time. He gained favor with Sweden s King Charles XII, who gave him a position on the board of overseers of the Swedish mining industry. Later, he was granted a seat on the Swedish House of Nobles by Charles XII s successor, Queen Ulrika Eleonora. Between 1743 and 1745 he began to have visions of heaven, hell, and Jesus Christ which resulted in a stream of books about the nature of God, the afterlife, and the inner meaning of the Bible. He devoted the last decades of his life to studying Scripture and presenting his own unique theology to the world.

Jonathan S. Rose is the series editor of the New Century Edition, an ongoing project that incorporates the latest scholarship to produce a modern, accessible translation of Emanuel Swedenborg s theological works. Holder of a B.A. and an M.Div. in religion and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Latin, he has worked for years in the study of Neo-Latin and in Swedenborgian research. He was both chaplain and a tenured professor of religion and sacred languages at Bryn Athyn College before taking on his current position."

Emanuel Swedenborg was born in 1688 and died in 1772.

A Great Spiritual Classic!  Jun 16, 2008
Simply put: friends don't let friends go into the "Light" without reading Emanuel Swedenborg.

Swedenborg wrote over 30 volumes of work, so figuring out where to dive into this ocean of material can be confusing. "Heaven and Hell" is a great place to start. Have you ever wondered about what Heaven looks like or what goes on there? If you have ever been curious about Angels and what they spend their time doing, you will have all these questions and more answered in this detailed account. Did God create hell so there would be a place to send sinners to be punished? Swedenborg says, "No." God does not punish or judge anyone. God is pure love and incapable of even frowning in our direction. Want to know who created hell and who goes there? You have to buy the book....

I highly recommend this book to anyone having a human experience.
How to belive this? No animals or other Creation?  Mar 30, 2008
I have read several of Swedenborg's works and was charmed by the ideals. The visions of the conversations in beautiful gardens are lovely. The hells are plausible. However the gardens must be silent ones. The gardens mere mirages. Swedenborg is highly human-centric and gives animals short shrift indeed. They are merely "souless beasts" that when dead are just that. Dead. No animals, no plants and long winded human converstions forever are my ideas of pure hell. That said, there is much good in the ideas presentd by Swedenborg and they are very profitable reading, the ideas of service should be acted upon. Those who have had near death experiences will be able to relate well. I suppose that if indeed he did have these experiences he was in his ideal of heaven. However heavens that do not include all of God's creation are sadly incomplete indeed.
A thought provoking book  Feb 19, 2008
I first became acquainted with Emanuel Swedenborg, through Helen Keller's book, My Religion. Eventually my daughter and I were baptized in The New Church.

There are different interpretations to Swedenborg's writings, but here are a few basic ideas.
*Swedenborg did not want a church started in his name. He thought it would be better if his writings were incorporated into the existing churches.
His church did not exist when he was alive.
*Evil exists because it helps you understand what is good.
*One basic purpose in life is to be USEFUL to others.
*Hell is not for ever. If you end up there you can get out.
*There are different levels to hell and heaven.
*The traditional concept of trinity is wrong. It divides God too much.
Swedenborg communicated with different spirits. He believed that it was useful to analyzed dreams. Swedenborg believed that different religions led to God. For most of this life Swedenborg was a scientist, who worked for the king of Sweden. Latter in life he had a spiritually awakening. He was a genius, ahead of his time.
I have also read True Christian Religion volumes I & II as well. I am not a scholar on Swedenborg, but I have studied him since the 1980's. Not everyone in his church believes in the conclusions that I have come to. Many of the twelve step program ideas are from Swedenborg's teachings.
If you decide to read Swedenborg, be sure you obtain a good translation.
George Dole is a good translator.
At the least...Fascinating  Nov 1, 2007
These recent English translations are a very intersting read for the "open minded". Swedenborg's matter-of-factly presentations of what he says he saw and heard is expressed so honestly, the reader is left with much to ponder on many "other worldly" topics. The author appears to truly believe the experiences he relates, and passes descriptions along to us in vivid detail, almost to a fault. At the very least, a fascinating read for those in search of something beyond the common. At the most, a theological challenge that takes Christianity , and religion as a whole, to a new level of comprehension. Recommended.
This is for real  May 17, 2006
If you really want to know what Heaven and Hell are like, sit down and read this. He talks about Heaven like he is visiting a foreign country. It is very matter of fact, very practical and tangible. In regard to spiritual truth, it's as rich as cheesecake. Angels and devils are seen simply as people who have passed on to the other side and chosen Heaven or Hell. Hell is not seen as a place of punishment, but one chosen by those who love evil. Similarly, Heaven is chosen by those who have loved goodness. It's very simple and profound. He speaks of marriage as an eternal union of true love. In fact, everyone in Heaven is supposedly married. Heaven is seen as a place where people are still people, who continue to work and do what they love. Hell is seen as a place where people spend their time alone in fantasy. Since they are not allowed to act out, this is what they end up doing. There's so much in here that you've got to read. Have you ever asked, "why hasn't anyone come back and told us about it." Well, this guy claims he's been there, and it makes lots of sense. Everyone who plans on dying some day will find lots of comfort in this book.
