He Said It! I Did It! Lessons from my Father on Mastering Personal Finance  Jul 17, 2007
Most personal finance guides share approximately the same general advice: live within your means, put money into your savings, and invest in long term investments for retirement. While these messages are simple common sense and most of us have heard this advice a million times, the reality is that most of us never really follow through on these notions. Thus, we continue to read the same advice over and over again in yet another personal finance book.

He Said It! I Did It! does include these same tried and true methods (that is, if we actually tried them) that most other personal finance books contain. However, this book also contains a few refreshing and new tactics that I have never read in other such books.

Most importantly, the authors explain the difference between being rich and having abundance. You can be rich and have lots of stuff but if you are spending above your means and are constantly struggling to keep that lifestyle then you will find yourself becoming a slave to the dollar. Abundance, living within your means and using your earning to achieve a vision, is the real goal.

The authors also take a markedly spiritual tone when it comes to money. Not only do they feel that God provides opportunities for abundance to those that show they are responsible enough to have money but also to those individuals who use their money to better the world.

I think for some individuals, these differences might actually help them think differently about money, as a tool to gain abundance rather than as a way of getting more stuff. Moreover, this book also reminds us all that we have a responsibility to leave the planet a bit better than when we arrived.

Money Management 101  Apr 28, 2006
Charles W. Buffington III has written a sort of African-American version of Rich Dad, Poor Dad with his nonfiction financial advice book He Said It! I Did It! Buffington's story is that he was making a lot of money as a successful businessman until he got laid off. He then discovered he was deep in debt, shallow on credit, and short on friends. He then turned to his father, a man who had retired in his 50s and owned two homes, for practical advice. The rest of the book is a series of bromides from the dad about staying out of debt, establishing a routine of investing, and being honest with folks.

Although the book has some tried and true advice about how to set up a budget, how to reduce personal overhead and expenses, how to hunt for bargains, and how to plan for retirement, there is nothing really new or revolutionary in what is shared. In fact, the author readily credits Steven Covey, Tony Robbins and others with many of the ideas he teaches.

However, what is genuine about the book is its consistent adherence to biblical principles about money management. Bible verses are quoted, Old and New Testament stories are retold, and serious discussions are brought up related to tithing and charity. Each chapter ends with an outline of the key points previously discussed and a series of Scripture verses applicable to the chapter's lessons.

Anyone new to the basics of financial management will find this book to be a primer. It is not technical, but written in layman's language. The lessons are functional, helpful, and easily applied. This is not a book about aggressive investment strategies, leveraging, or speculations. It is a course in Money Management 101. - Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, Christian Book
Mastering finances is within grasp  Mar 3, 2006

Upon first seeing the picture of the authors of "He Said It! I Did It!" you might think these guys have come from a long line of wealthy stock. They are handsome, well-dressed, and convey the image of "having it all." But one of the surprising things about this book is the way in which it is written. You find out very quickly this father and son author team did NOT start out with wealth, but built a comfortable life for themselves with discipline, hard work, and common sense investing. Their down-to-earth tone in approaching the reader makes them all the more credible. They speak to the average person, perhaps living paycheck to paycheck, and offer realistic advice in mastering personal finance. The burden of debt can often be spiritually exhausting. So many of us are living on the edge when it comes to our wealth, and the comforting message in this book is how to change that once and for all.

The format of "He Said It! I Did It!" starts each chapter with a lesson from the senior Buffington to his son, who then speaks to the reader for the remainder of the chapter. The tone is conversational, and the reader will immediately be drawn in as the younger Buffington speaks about his life as a young man who at first didn't give much thought to his finances. His story is like many of ours, which makes his advice all the more pertinent in today's society.

Throughout the book there are realistic tips and lessons underscored by Christian principles. I found this spiritual approach refreshing, and think the many readers who are average, hard working people who just can't seem to get ahead, will too. In the end, it isn't just about working hard - it's about thinking ahead, living toward your goals rather than in the moment. Moreover, unlike many other books on personal finance, "He Said It! I Did It!" will leave you feeling that finally mastering your personal finances is within your grasp, within your lifetime, and you'll be encouraged to begin now.

A Must Read For Anyone Under 50  Aug 19, 2005
Finally a book about personal finances that is easy enough to understand and comprehensive enough to actually work. Not since reading "The Knowing Doing Gap" have I seen so many things that I said, "I knew that but I sure wish I had done something about it". After reading the Buffington's book, I immediately bought two more copies and sent it to my 34 year old kids with a mandate for them to read it and hopefully use it. From a spiritual perspective, it is the first time I have seen someone articulate not only the reason to tithe, but also explain how to get yourself out of the financial bondage to be able to know the joy of giving. "He Said It, I Did It" should be required reading for every college and high school student in America.
