Riveting emotional drama  May 26, 2010
From the opening lines depicting the heart as the "most fragile and resilient of organs", Tosca Lee drew me with melodic and sensual storytelling in Havah, The Story of Eve.

Havah captures your heart through an emotional rendering of Havah(Eve) and her Adam. We view through Havah's eyes, her heart and her senses all the beauty and harmony of every living thing in the Garden of Eden. We feel the presence of the One That Is and yearning in her heart for more of the One. We experience love, pure as originally designed, between Havah and her Adam. And then we experience the decision that destroyed everything, the fall that turned harmony into chaos and separated created man from his Creator.

Lee fleshes out the lives and experiences of the first man and woman in such a way we are struck with the deepest regret imaginable over the one decision that separates them not only from God, but also from each other. Regret that is experienced for over 900 years. The fall is described in such detail, we are shocked by its effects on every element of creation.

If you have ever wondered just what Eve endured, Lee's riveting storytelling exposes in melodic prose, every emotion and situation Eve could have faced in her long life. Perhaps the most bitter, is the extent to which she wished to reverse what happened in order to once again live in harmony with the One That Is and her Adam.

I wept just to attempt this review so intensely were my emotions stirred by the end and then the beginning of this story, as I had to dive right back in.

I read with a dictionary by my side, so rich is Tosca's prose. Overdone? No. A desirable weave of word pictures akin to the original Eden, it revealed the wonder of the creation and the perfection of the relationships, then the sorrows and joys of life after the fall.

For everyone who questions what happened with the first man and woman. Wake!
Mother of All Living - a timeless masterpiece!  May 25, 2010
I loved this book in so many ways I don't even know where to begin! The language is beautiful and flows like music across the page. Interspersed throughout the lyrical sentences are poetic phrases and descriptions that read as if they come from Havah's imagination, but also remind me of the words of the Biblical books Psalms and Song of Solomon. Havah's life is fascinating to watch unfold, from her dreams of the creation of the world, to her first sin and the subsequent aftermath, to each skill that she acquires to survive with the Adam outside of the garden. I shared her joy at the birth of each child, and I found her many discussions and arguments with the Adam to be strangely similar to interactions with my own husband. Here is a woman that every woman ever living could relate to in some way, and it satisfies a craving that I have often felt to simply sit down and talk to the "Mother of All Living." The Bible says precious little about Eve - only three chapters in Genesis make mention of her. The lengths to which Tosca Lee went to create a more complete picture of this captivating woman are detailed at the end of the text, and her list of sources is quite impressive. So much of this story is believable and relevant to even the most modern of women, in such things as her musings of life and death, the ups and downs of her various relationships, her daily tasks to survive, and her struggle to find meaning and purpose for her life. All of the fine details of the development of civilization were also quite entertaining, as I read the beginnings of farming, food preparation, pottery, trade, art, cloth-making, herding, etc. So many things I will think about for years to come, such as how the smallest things could develop over time to have such great impact, like a drawing of Havah's becoming the symbol of a religious sect or the chants of one of her many daughters turning into the song of a nation. This book was a study in human behavior in so many ways as well, such as how their vegetarian lifestyle changed to include first fish and then other meats by repeated famine or how greater numbers of people in close quarters resulted in strife and conflict. I could go on and on about all that I loved about this book, but instead I will simply say that this book is definitely one of the best books I have ever read, and I highly recommend it, no matter what religion the reader prescribes to.
An interesting read  Mar 14, 2010
Read for a book club; we all agreed that it was a good book, once one stumbled through the first several chapters.
We'd all recommend this read to anyone else.
A memorable and captivating work of prose  Mar 14, 2010
I just finished Tosca Lee's book Havah. Oh my! From the first words of the novel, I was captivated. I couldn't wait to read and devour every word in my mind and heart. There are few books that really touch the reader in a way that you think about it days or weeks after you finish it. To me, this is one of them. Such an enriching experience. I can not wait to read her other book Demon A Memoir. I can not wait for her next book. Lee is a very talented, imaginative, and touching writer. I am hooked!
Beautifully written and very creative....  Jan 17, 2010
An amazing tale from Eve's point of view. This story about the first woman on earth, her first sights, thoughts, experiences, is simply breathtaking. It did take a few pages of reading to put it into context. So stick with it. It is a little on the flowery side, but you will not be disappointed. The reason for a 4 and not a 5 star, simple: because of the unnecessary larger grammar at various points which made it seem like the author was a little shallow, or using her word of the day calendar. When you get past that you, like I will be glad to have read this complete story. It was indeed beautiful. Enjoy!
