Item Description...
The last four decades have seen a substantial progress in the study of the Book of Ben Sira (Ecclesiasticus) on the literary, historical, theological, and sociological level. The discovery of the Hebrew Ben Sira Scroll at Masada in 1964 and the find of Hebrew Ben Sira fragments among the Dead Sea Scrolls were crucial landmarks to encourage serious investigation into this deuterocanonical document. Nowadays the Book of Ben Sira, which originates from the early second Century B.C.E., is recognized more and more as being an outstanding document of Jewish wisdom literature and an important link between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Following a general introduction into the major topics of recent Ben Sira research, this volume offers a detailed study of several passages that are crucial to the book's history, its content and structure. Important theological issues, such as 'canon and scripture', 'prophets and prophecy', 'theodicee', and 'God's mercy', are discussed as well. This study concludes with some essays relating to the Hebrew text(s) of the Book of Ben Sira.

Essays on the Book of Ben Sira from three decades  Mar 19, 2007
The Wisdom of Ben Sira belongs to the deutero-canonical books of the Old Testament. The past two decades have witnessed a growing scholarly interest towards this sapiental book. Several new monographs and articles on Ben Sira have recently been published. "Happy the One Who Meditates on Wisdom" is a collection of essays by Prof. Pancratius C. Beentjes, and this book continues the boom of Ben Sira research. Prof. Beentjes is a famous name for all Ben Sira scholars and students, notably because he has edited the most extensive and reliable text edition on the Hebrew text of Ben Sira ("The Book of Ben Sira in Hebrew", 1997/ repr. 2006). Besides this standard text edition Beentjes has been productive as an author of many articles that concentrate on Ben Sira. Many of these important essays are now easily available, thanks to this new book. There are altogether 27 essays in this book, most of them are in English; in addition there are a few articles in German. All but one chapter have previously been published, mainly in various journals or "Festschrifts".

Beentjes is famous for his sharp-eyed philological skills. Therefore it is no wonder that textual criticism plays a major role in many articles. Thematic or theological questions are usually dealt more briefly and these observations are subordinate to philological conclusions. If one reads the book nearly at one sitting, it may be little irritating that there are so many verbatim overlaps between different essays. In this respect the articles could have been more thoroughly revised and modified for this new publication. Another annoying thing is the defective proofreading. There are too many spelling mistakes both in English and in German parts of the book. Nonetheless, these small weaknesses do not tarnish the value and importance of this work. Through three decades Prof. Beentjes has actively contributed to the international Ben Sira research, and it is great to have an opportunity to read his articles in the form of a single book. The expertise of the author is incontestable, and his conclusions are based on a balanced consideration. Therefore this book is a must for everyone who wants to study the Wisdom of Ben Sira and cognate literature.
